The annoying thing about TRANCE is that, as a piece of technical filmmaking, it's often remarkable: the cinematography is marvelous (the use of color and shadow is outstanding), the sound and music are fine, and Danny Boyle directs his ass off. And the acting is solid; Rosario Dawson is effective, and Vincent Cassel is a perfect sleaze. But the script is the worst kind of fragmented thriller, with twists that simply irritate and an inconsistently drawn protagonist. After a while, it just bores.

Boyle's stylistic flourishes could not elevate what is essentially a contrived, messy, and nonsensical concept with a decent enough execution.

Trance is yet another example of Boyle's competence as a filmmaker. And the cast is great. Unfortunately, the script is absolute nonsense - hypnotherapy is taken far beyond any plausibility (at least Inception treats its implausible elements as sci-fi), the structure is confusing, the twists obvious an hour away, and the end is a cut and paste job. Full of holes, with little credibility, its big moments become eye-rollers. I didn't hate it - it's an honest attempt. It just failed.

This bizarre thriller is a little disappointing coming from such a talented filmmaker as Danny Boyle. The plot structure is bizarre and at times impenetrable until characters choose to reveal twists to the audience. That said, the hyper editing and visually arresting imagery that you expect from a Boyle production is on show throughout the brisk runtime and there is some solid acting from the cast. If only the script was a little less convoluted and reliant on manipulating the audience.

Has many problems, but overall is enjoyable. My main gripe is that hypnosis (being as central to this film as it is) is just not a firm or tangible enough concept to pivot the rest of the film on. This soft center thus leads to a somewhat uneven, messy storyline that feels too convoluted, despite being entertaining in its own way. Cassel's underdeveloped character also seriously limits the final act and ending's effectiveness. Boyle shoots this film beautifully though. Also, Dawson muff.

I hesitate to call Trance exceptionally "good," but it's always interesting and on a simple entertainment factor, it will please audiences for its entire running time. It will also frustrate those who insist on attempting to stay one step ahead of movies, or confuse those that have trouble following what feels like dozens of twists. It needed better characters and a script that didn't back its film into a corner from which it couldn't escape.

I was a bit disappointed with this film, as Danny Boyle's work is mostly pretty good. The whole thing was kinda clunky, even with its slick-looking visuals. It was hard not be reminded of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Inception (2010), for sure. I may have to watch it again, as I was crazy tired when I saw it, but yeah, I don't know, I wasn't into it.

Danny Boyle's "Side Effects" or "The Ghost Writer." The director runs this show and unabashedly makes one of the more visually consuming films of the year. Unfortunately its cast and script can't keep up with Boyle's ambition. For a crime thriller the story just isn't that interesting and the twists aren't that compelling. Boyle builds to them flawlessly though with brilliant production design and cinematography.

A movie which, almost immediately, lets you know that things aren't what they appear to be. Consequently, you're on guard for most of the film, not fully accepting anything you're seeing since...well...things aren't what they appear to be. All style and no content, the denouement will leave you dumbfounded.

A marvellous, psychotropic mindfuck. Boyle discomfits the viewer with funky pacing and visceral sex and violence, livening up an already-enthralling heist thriller with Inception-esque structural panache and the trippy stylings of a late-90s dance music video.

More complex and twist-y than it needs to be, considering the story is rather simple and bland, and there is actually very little to care about. Great imagery at times, but strip away the shiny looks and Eternal Sunshineyness and what's left is a rather silly crime-thriller with a groaner of an ending.

Probably a bigger mess of confusion than the mindfuck movies it clearly draws inspiration from. That's nice, it's something to talk about and a worthwhile movie to spend an evening with. But it doesn't come together into something great either. All of Boyle's best strengths come through though. Not a blockbuster, but Boyle's seemed less concerned with those since his last few.

Very stylish, flashy British movie with great energy, editing, score and cinematography. The premise of amnesia has been done to death in films, and whilst in 'Trance' it moves in a slightly different direction it still feels stale and the outcome is ALWAYS "I remember!". Overall, this is a victory for style over substance; good set pieces, good premise, but a thin story that pads itself out, requires massive exposition, and so loses both its way AND any sense of building to a real climax

Pretty disappointing. I'm fine with hypnosis as a plot device, but its use here was beyond ridiculous. I also like convoluted stories with lots of twists and turns, but not where the characters' actions make absolutely zero sense in order to pull off the trick. Sure looks good though! Also, Rosario Dawson full frontal.

I personally don't know why so many hated this. I guess I must not be too hard to impress? I thought all of the acting was really good and it has plenty of Danny Boyle's distinctive visuals. It's not the most compelling story he has ever directed around, but it's short and entertaining and quite trippy.

Boyle delivers a decent film, no more no less, which ends up being a bit disappointing because I think he could have aimed higher. The acting is all ok, but it's not really a performance film. The plot could have been handled a bit better. And apparently being a hypnotherapist is almost akin to being a Jedi.

Decent. Fairly entertaining but by the end after all the twists were explained it didn't feel very special. I was half-expecting some sort of intelligent sci-fi after some hints early on in the film but those expectations were not met, there certainly was more potential for a more meaningful film. The style is at least different than most films so it was fairly enjoyable to watch but the plot ended up being not very special.

Trance is everything you could want and expect from a Danny Boyle film and its possibly my favourite film of his since Trainspotting. The plot is engaging, thought provoking and the pacing is well balanced. It is visually stunning with great cinematography and editing. The cast is strong also with great performances from the reliable James McAvoy, cool Vincent Cassel and in particular Rosario Dawson who steals the show with a performance that I hope will lead her to bigger and better things.

Keeps going & going, sometimes backwards, annoyingly. Looks great like most films these days, but the concept becomes a Pollock of ideas. Heist flick, psychological heist flick, bit of Bourne, bit of genital grooming, as if the poster designer was secretly critiquing the film. Gets off to a solid start then bores after Dawson gets involved. From there it's a mess of betrayal, memories, remembering memories & the professional use of vaginas. Cassel's fast becoming typecast as the French-evil guy.

Oh. My. Fucking. God. What a skillfully twisted fucking movie. All that hinting business...never has ambiguity been employed in such a great manner. And what a tremendously fucking awesome performance by Rosario Dawson. She's now officially a goddess, if you ask me. This movie's definitely on my list of few digitally shot movies I visually dig. This was a pretty good movie. There were a lot of twists, and the reveals near the end were interesting and unexpected. It had some flaws. Sometimes I couldn't tell immediately if something was really happening or if it was just the hypnosis. It also just had a few mildly confusing parts where it was trying to be too "stylish" at times. Still, it was an entertaining story that keeps you guessing about whats really going on until the very end.

If your suspension of disbelief can allow for a film to base its plot around hypnosis, Trance should work very well for you on multiple layers. It's actually handled just right and everyone involved sells it, McAvoy most of all. Trippy but not overdone with a not-quite 80s soundtrack, stunning visuals that always perfectly set the atmosphere rather than distract from it, and a compelling story makes this a spectacular entry on Danny Boyle's resumé.

An excellent crime thriller from Danny Boyle. This film was just great. Wonderful acting from James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. I kept trying to guess where this movie was going plot-wise and I was always wrong. The twists came hard and fast, they also did a good job of explaining things so you didn't feel too lost but it wasn't totally spoon-fed to you. Danny Boyle takes his erect penis, puts it through your ear and fucks your mind for 100 minutes. I wouldn't say this is an entirely successful film (due to how damn busy the storyline is), but it sure does feature a ton of WTF moments, which through Boyle's kinetic, off-kilter style, keep this an entertaining watch. Well-cast (even McAvoy), engaging flick that reminds you of many (Eternal Sunshine, Vanilla Sky, the ambience of Drive) but still feels original. Starts straightforward enough before taking a turn or two then piling on relentless twists in the second half, forcing you to keep thinking right to the end. Could've had a more satisfying conclusion, and it's certainly not perfect, but most of what's there is executed very well. Another where a re-watch could unveil its brilliance or expose its flaws.

Danny Boyle has kinda returned to his roots as a filmmaker. Here we have an excellent electronic score, a John Hodge screenplay, rapid editing, plenty of camera gimmickry, a blend of humor, tension and disturbing horror, and a small set of characters exploring their relationships with each other - and in this particular instance, their relationship with their own mind. It can be a bit confusing and it can get a little convoluted, but it has some nice thematic resonance and it's certainly a ride.

The good: the premise is intriguing, McAvoy and Cassel deliver, and it looks fantastic, with sharp, bold cinematography and striking use of color. The bad: it's a bit too convoluted. The ugly: the massive exposition dump towards the climax which basically consists of Rosario Dawson explaining the movie in detail (though, it must be said, the shot of her tear-dappled, neon-lit face through the car window made it more intriguing than it might otherwise have been). I don't think that's a good thing, though--I was not into INCEPTION and tend to prefer movies with narratives that make fricking sense beyond "whoooa man! that blew my miiiind!" pull-the-rug-out gimmickry. This one's pretty unpleasant, and is basically just Boyle dicking around with storytelling techniques for a couple hours. Trance is an annoying mess. Boyle relishes in lens flares, titled camera angles and bass heavy, synth tracks to distract from a mediocre and silly plot. That's not to say Boyle didn't craft an atmosphere of confusion well, but did so in a way that I did not find remotely enjoyable. The nonsensical characters are hard to invest in, despite a decent effort from the cast. And the plot "twist" is a fitting epitome of this film: an overwhelming disappointment.

This is a fun, low rent version of Inception as we go into the head of a thief and explore the unknown. All of that is heightened by the Orbital music, which really brings out the "trance" name of the title. It's a unique, fun caper, elevated by the performances and Boyle's direction.
