Evocative ethnographic film. The relation between dance, trance and ritual is fascinating. Bateson and Mead pioneered this cinematic form, with good use made of slow-motion, for example. The viewer also has a sense, perhaps, of the strangeness of anthropology, with its mixture of the wish to record disappearing worlds, a yearning to locate some kind of scientific basis for the discipline, and adventurism. Despite hundreds of examples, anthropological cinema probably never achieved its potential.

IT is what it is, a well made observational documentary. We see some rituals, well filmed, and a hint of context. Mead's narration is rather dry though, and, while I understand the fear of editorializing, I would have preferred more explanation and less describing what's on screen.

The rituals of Bali explained. Like a dance show with commentary on top. It was either that or subtitles for me to get what was going on. A nice way to broaden once's cultural senses.
