Smashes together genres and ideas leaving you quite unsure as to what is actually happening. Though the plot doesn't end up labyrinthine it quickly becomes absurd, and delightfully so, with Elias ending up as confounded (though not quite as amused) as we are. In its bondage laden, often shifting and joyously winking madness it can't help but be anything short of captivating.

Incredible! An amazing experience... The plot ("of a non-plot movie") is complex, but everything fits in perfectly (those who can't fathom the complexities of the plot are likely to dismiss it as absurd).

Robbe-Grillet’s brilliant work of metafiction can be considered a crowning achievement of the Nouvelle Vague in how it deconstructs the conventional framework of cinema so uniquely. Directed and edited with breezy playfulness and mesmerising style, there’s just so much visual and conceptual flair on display, complimented by a superb Trintignant performance at its centre.

Both surprisingly playful and surprisingly dark. Robbe-Grillet's partnership with Resnais makes a lot of sense after seeing his solo efforts. The work of both artists, for all its twisty formalism, is built around a core of sensitive humanity.

First Robbe-Grillet film that I've seen, and I was surprised by how entertaining it was. Sure, the plot is constantly changing and the film requires the viewer to play along, but it's still following (parodying?) genre conventions of crime film/noir with Trintignant's character delivering hilariously sarcastic dialogue. It's aptly described elsewhere as arthouse meets grindhouse, and there are definitely elements to please both audiences.

Too artificial to be an effective thriller, but well-filmed with some great scenes. Enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Belgian shipyards. The sexual degeneracy is a big minus.
