Bree (Huffman) is a perfectly adjusted conservative transsexual woman. Born Stanley, a genetic male, she's about to tale the final step to becoming the woman Stanley always wanted to be - until she finds out that she is the parent of a long-lost 17 year-old son (Zegers). Afraid to tell the rebellious teenager the truth, Bree embarks on a journey with him that will challenge and change both their lives and bring them closer to the truth of their connection. Besides an admirable performance by Felicity Huffman, this movie is a giant flaw. It's not Huffman's fault, but the part is a man's, and so despite all her efforts to appear and sound like a man trying to be a female, it just doesn't sit. And the movie is filled with silly cliches, and doesn't take itself seriously (in the bad sense). It might as well be a not very funny sitcom on NBC that gets cancelled after three episodes.

Remarkble performance by Felicity Huffman.. Too bad she was nominated at the same year with Reese Witherspoon..

Decent movie that I have no interest in ever seeing again. Huffman's performance was good but it didn't blow me away or anything.

Sweet natured, enjoyable road movie is hemmed by the conventional, predictable arc of its narrative; a whole film could have been made from Huffman's Bree simply living a day-to-day life. The film only falters in the cluttered final act, particularly as Zeger first approaches and then processes the expected moment of revelation, raising questions the film is timid about answering. As Huffman's show, it is worthy and memorable, but with a tougher screenplay, this could have skirted greatness.

How on earth do you make a movie about a pre-operative transexual's life crisis boring? That's talent.

Huffman's performance is probably good but I hated it. That goes for the whole movie, since it's really just that one performance.

I have next to no knowledge of transsexuals but I thought Felicity Huffman's performance was Amazing with a capital A and if I was one of them I would wish that every fictional portrayal of transsexuals could be as sensitive, complex and frank as Duncan Tucker's look at the subject. The acting was great, the road trip was (as ever) the perfect character journey, and simple as the story was it got me deeply invested right the way through. This film deserved more recognition and awards.

A road movie with a transgendered protagonist who shows almost no admirable traits. Once in a while, something amusing occurs, but there's precisely zero drama and the overall tastelessness gets on your nerves

Supremely cheesy and stupid, but I thought gimmicks aside, Huffman knew how to walk the script, and Flanagan is underrated as the crazed mother. A total campfest, though one I don't feel any better for watching.

Top badass moment? That must make me a Level 5 vegan then. A so-so plot that’s played a bit too much for laughs, backed up by great characters and acting, makes this a watchable but not life-changing experience; like (for example) having your boy or girl parts 'altered' might be. Which under the circumstances is kind of ironic. But I can tell you one thing, it's a lot harder to become a success in life than a different gender - not that I've tried either. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Provocative, yet humorous in some ways. TransAmerica is a film worth watching if you like realistic, road-trip comedies about a dysfunctional family trying to be together again by traveling across state to state. I don't know much of the actors, but they all did a great job portraying real people. Overall - good movie.

Some really great characters here and the story is very heartfelt. I like it that neither the trans-sexual woman or the gay prostitute were "punished" for their "sins," which happens a lot in these kinds of films. Instead, it's a good story about the importance of family, no matter how unconventional that family happens to be.

Enjoyable road movie featuring a trans woman, Bree, just days away from her surgery, and her delinquent son. Except for Fionnula Flanagan, no one's quite as good or as funny as lead actor Felicity Huffman, particularly cute but vacant Kevin Zegers as Toby, and there are some pat plot moves, but still, enough real moments to make the good feelings well-earned.

Amid the less inspired elements, this offers moments of wit and insight, especially during a high-strung visit between Bree and her parents (Flanagan, Young) and younger recovering addict sister (Preston). This movie won't be winning any awards for originality or visionary achievement, but in its own small, sweet way, the film -- and Huffman -- win you over and make you deeply sympathize with the obstacles Bree must face in the name of happiness.

All these points are for the performance of Felicity Huffman. It's incredible how she manages to portray Bree as such a complex person with all those tiny mannerisms. Too bad that screenwriters didn't had that much commitment, because the story isn't as fresh as Felicity's performance. It definitely loses it's credibility when the parents get involved. From that point on they can't resist putting in some lousy twists and corny elements.
