Trash Fire

Bizarre genre mishmash is willfully acrid and confrontational from the get-go, thanks especially to Grenier's nails-on-a-blackboard evocation of obnoxiousness, but its portrait of a relationship gone bad is beautifully drawn and darkly funny. Abrupt switch to gothic (and gruesome) horror in the second half is jarring, but redeemed by Bates' clever allusions to past horror movies, and Flanagan's beautifully demented performance as a loony matriarch. Not much heart, but a lot of fun.

Owen is an asshole, coming from a long line of assholes who no longer agree on the best motivations for their assholery, and now have to try to pretend that nobody's an asshole in the name of family unity. In other words, on some level it's the best movie you can imagine for thanksgiving 2016.

Almost boring, almost no horror.

Not really a horror-comedy. More like a grotesque farce about a bulimic, epileptic, sexually inadequate, antisocial dick, his criminally insane grandmother, deformed sister, and one young woman who appears to be normal and well adjusted in every way other than her inexplicable romantic feelings for him. Expect morbid fascination and little else, but it's perfectly okay for what it is.

Starts off darkly comedic and ends like a four-alarm garbage f...oh I get it. Wonderfully bizarre and succinctly creepy.
