Treasure Island

A sweet adaptation of the Treasure Island story with a reunion of Wallace Beery & Jackie Cooper who had success with "The Champ (1931)" a few years earlier. What's different this time is that Cooper is reaching that awkward age where he's no long a cute child and rather a odd looking fellow. The Lionel Barrymore portion early on was probable my favorite part of the movie. Can't say I got as much into the later parts of the movie. The action was never great and it got a little too soppy and cute.

A serviceable adaptation, that rushes through its source material without taking much breaks. The kid playing Jim Hawkins was maybe a bit too young for the role - though the character's age isn't specified in the novel, so it leaves some room for imagination - and somewhat annoying. The pirates were overly comical, though I kinda warmed up to Beery's Silver as the movie went on.

'Pon my soul, the lead duo of Beery and Cooper feed too rich a diet in ham to be worthy hosts to this boyish tale of treasure in the tropics.

Kinda blah. It's supposed to be a classic story, but I remember not being too impressed by the book when I was just a kid, either

Nicely mounted Hollywood version of a classic adventure story, a little slow in development but meticulously produced.

Next to 'ham' in the dictionary is Wallace Beery's performance in this movie. Also, portraying Jim Hawkins as Little Lord Faulteroy was probably a bad choice.
