There's something that feels ironically self-involved & exploitative about Gene Roddenberry's son's decision 2 put himself front & center of a film that's supposed to be about his search 2 get 2 know his father through Star Trek. He spends a lot of time on screen learning - with the exception of his father's chronic infidelity - stuff any1 with more than a passing interest in Trek already knows. Still, this is another excuse 4 fans 2 engage w/ their favorite topic once more.

Not a lot of insight into the man or his fan base; this becomes more about a son's adult journey in maturing his understanding of his passed father. We watch his progression and while we don't learn much new about senior we see junior grow. Still an engaging and interesting narrative. There's some tidbits straight from the horses' mouths that confirm a lot of rumors and fan speculations so it's refreshingly candid in this regard. Good for people who don't know if they're Trekkers or Trekkies.

Rod Roddenberry is not a great interviewer. "What was my father like?" isn't a leading question. That's a dead end question. If you want to get into a deep conversation, you don't lead with "how was your day?" You get specific.

A very geeky, but largely thoughtful and interesting documentary that approaches Trek from a slightly different perspective. I'll admit as a big Trek fan I'm certainly inclinded enjoy this more than most, but this film would probably manage to keep even some of the most ardent Trek sceptics interested. What it does well is to manage to hint at the multi-layered nature of ST, and why it can appeal to such a diverse range of people. A good watch.

Somewhat interesting for a Trek fan. Probably insufficient as any sort of introduction/explanation for a non-trekker.

It's a missed opportunity. The doors that are open to Gene Roddenberry's son are not fully taken advantage of. Far too much time is spent narrating, or explaining exactly what we are about to see/just saw. There are definitely some interesting bits (mostly for Trek fans I'd suggest,) it just could've been a lot more.
