Marcel Carné attempts to make a film in the style of the French New Wave and ... doesn't completely fail. Both leads do a good job, and the authentic locations in mid-60's New York are appealing, but the film is extremely talky in a not very engaging fashion. I was never actively put off by it, but it was an average at best experience. Spaghetti western fans: Donald O'Brien shows up as a short order cook and Gabriele Ferzetti plays Girardot's ex-husband.
