The wife and kids watched it whilst I was making pasta in the kitchen. Admittedly I couldn't actually see it (thank fuck) but hearing it word for fucking word was more than enough to know what score it deserved.

A painfully awful movie targeted at the same kind of masochistic kids who watch Teletubbies, or the sadistic parents who force their kids to watch the same. So horribly uninteresting and songs so undeniably grating that they could be used as a very effective torture. I, for one, would tell you anything to not have to watch this piece of crap again.

Right about the time an autotuned troll shat glitter in the face of another troll I decided to lie down in a dark room with a large bottle of water and wait for the bad trip to pass.

I guess it could be worse. If you stripped away all the side characters and the shitty pop culture references and the garish colours you'd have a perfectly palatable run of the mill story about finding happiness within yourself or some other similar inoffensive little morality tale for children. All that other horrible stuff is there and in your face and ears for the entire movie, though, and it's awful.

Clearly I was too old, too sober, too sane, and maybe too grumpy for this movie. Or all of the above. How can so many colours still make you feel angry...?

Trolls is a simplistic movie that is well-animated, filled with energetic pop songs, contains a few creative sequences, and has a message that it delivers frequently and in very heavy-handed ways. It also may or may not be a drug metaphor, and I choose to believe that it absolutely is, because that would just be incredible. Trolls isn't particularly interesting (outside of the drug stuff), but it's not bad and not a waste of time, either. It's kind of fun.

The Musical numbers range from okay to terrible, the plot is fun, yet uninspired, and it's moral message comes across as both flat and heavy-handed, However, it's world is a psychedelic theme park of bright colours. neon textures, and effervescent inhabitants, and despite it's weaknesses that ultimately is the film's strongest point: it's ability to transport you to a what feels like a hyperactive three-year old's imaginary dreamworld.

Based on trailers I was expecting this to be horrible, point-blank. But it's actually quite entertaining, if not totally ridiculous. Fun songs and lots of bright colors kept my young boys interested.

And then there was Gargamel, the evil wizard. He was bad! Oh, I hate you. I'll get you, I'll get all of you, if it's last thing I've ever do! Oh, sorry wrong story. They just tried to be Schtroumpfs. In bad, bad way. I hated every piece of it.

I'm a give it to you straight. It's awful. Yes, perhaps the fact that this is aimed at kids has something to do with it but for the most part, this is just really stupid, and just makes you groan and roll your eyes. It's pity because of the great cast involved but even the songs aren't that great (except for their rendition of "True Colours") and it just feels like a very round-about way to be able to play "Can't Stop the Feeling" (the best thing about this).

While not the worst thing in the world it's still a large pile of crap. The beginning was so bad that it hurt and the second half was pretty much the same story as every other kids film every made, full of shitty moralistic life lessons.

OK, I'm a convert. Generally, all it takes is the approval of my 4 year old, but the music and voice actors are more than enough to keep a grownup satisfied during this kids movie.

I tried to rank this lower, but I just enjoy it too much. I initially hated it when I saw it in the theater with my little cousin because I thought it was a little dark and had a little too much mindless humor for children. I'm still not sure it works as a kids movie, but I've grown to love it. The story is touching, the songs are good, and it's got some great moments.

I'm geniunely surprised how enjoyable this film was. Fantastic vocal performances and excellent musical adaptations. As my kid is completely enamored with this film and I've been forced to re-watch this several times, it actually holds pretty well for re-watching. Sweet enough for small children but has enough of tanginess for a more mature taste.

When the thin plot finally sets in (after a rather terrible and lazy introduction) it's another case of too little too late. Even for a kids movie with no ambitions.

But the music is peppy, the heroes are likeable, the bad guys get their comeuppance, and nothing is really too scary. In fact, this let's-all-get-along tale is pretty much exactly the kind of felt-and-glitter silliness you might expect from a movie about something you used to keep in your pencil box. (pluggedin.com)

Trolls looked like a gruelling experience for any parent to endure with their children. Following the success of The Lego Movie, it now seems that almost any toy property could spawn a film adaption as an easy cash grab. However I was pleasantly surprised and my 3 year old absolutely loved it. Anna Kendrick provides standout voicework and the impressive animation is colourful and vibrant throughout with many trippy and imaginative sequences built around a thoroughly enjoyable story for children.

For a film based on a toy, it could be worse; this tale of the titular trolls trying to save themselves from the malice of the bloodthirsty Bergens has enough color, song, and off-the-wall humor to keep one diverted. It's not all that GOOD, per se, and there are half-a-dozen better animated films to take the kids to this year, but if you must see it, you'll probably survive with your spirit intact.

Kendrick sounds good but Trolls isn't a good movie by a long shot. The story is generic and the moral is blatantly spoken aloud repeatedly. The songs are well known, and I feel it's to the film's detriment. The animation is good, there are definitely a few funny moments, and it's likely to entertain some kids, but beyond that it doesn't offer much.

It's very much lowest common denominator stuff, with a lot of very calculated moves from the studio to make sure it succeeded. But yeah, not bad. It's nice and colourful and the animation is done well. The storyline has been done a thousand times and is very predictable, but it's not mishandled or anything. The voice cast is good, and the music sequences are pretty entertaining. Nothing really pushes it beyond "decent", but it's serviceable.

Way better than it had any right to be. Songs all fit perfectly or are unexpected in a hilarious way. The voice cast, while mostly B-list, works really well. The animation is a cross between highly colorful, velvet textures and stoner/acid trippy quality. It's a surprisingly emotional movie at points. Which was nice to see.

Entertainment: 5.5/4 -- one of the funniest most endearing movies (animated or not) that I've seen. Spirit: 2/3 -- the usual prioritization of family/tribe, but this time extending it to another race. Sustainability: 2/3 -- living in harmony with nature.

Trolls is one of those movies that you like some parts of, but others just didn't work. I enjoyed the colors and the music, which was sometimes used in a pretty humorous way. The story itself was okay, not great, but nothing too terrible. The humor was kind of meh mostly. I thought there were some funny spots, but a lot of the humor just seemed lowest common denominator stuff. The kids largely loved it though, except for my youngest (4) who got a little scared in the middle.

This film was solidly bad but not awful. Totally biting on the Smurfs in my opinion with the storyline. There was nothing original or worthwhile but it didn't exactly fill me with rage either. There were some interesting pieces of animation that looked like a sort of CGI claymation which I found cool, but that was it. Full of shiny glittery flowing colors but still dull.

As a short this might have worked. But at an hour longer than a short this film is an uninspired, slow moving, pile of commercial crap. I still love the catchy tune, 'I will get up again', but the movie reeks of a budget misspent and opportunity lost. What the heck went so wrong?

(Rewatch. Still just needle drops.) Voice talent is there but the story is so bland and near pointless. Twist at the end makes it more of a waste of time. There are much better kids' movies and even ones w/pop culture references and sing-alongs. The animation is pretty good. The art style is okay---I liked the Trolls more than the Bergens who just all looked like obese gray people. The characters all resembled the voice actors. Fav scene: Poppy heading on her journey while things eat each other

Sweet natured animated film would likely be more fun to the target demographic, who mightn't care so much some of the dips from sweet into cloying, and an annoying habit of utilising a jukebox of vintage needle drops at every opportunity to do a bit of short-cut character development (though be damned if "True Colours" didn't get this viewer a bit misty!) It's trying to be "Baby Shrek" and on that basis, it kind of works even if I would have preferred a little more subtlety and wit.

I don't hate Trolls as much as I might've thought. It's no Lego Movie, which it was clearly trying to market itself as, but it separates itself from the worst of the worst quite clearly. This voice cast is definitely top tier and the story is serviceable for a family audience. It is what it is, and I can't fault it for that.

I skipped this movie when it was originally released in theaters in 2016, because I was 90% sure I would dislike it. In the virus-riddled 2020, after I found out that the only new movie released was Trolls World Tour, I knew I had to take an adventure with a success rate of 10%. And surprisingly it turned out to be quite charming and totally watchable, although nothing exceptional.

I had seen the sequel earlier and though it was colorful, mindless fun. This was considerably darker and clearly had some more thought put into it; the Bergens might actually be too scary for the younger audience. It still had the colorful musical numbers of the sequel but without making them the core of the film. It also had some nice references to fairy tales and folklore. I could definitely give this another watch so I'd say it's well above the average family animation.

It's tolerable, but not particularly enjoyable. The animation is pretty good, but it's pretty blatantly made for small children first, and everyone else second. There is a complete lack of subtlety and the entire plot revolves around singing trolls. I wouldn't watch it again.

I think what makes this movie funny to me is that it insists on friendship and romantic relations as being the path towards happiness but completely ignores why, exactly, the society in question is unhappy to begin with. Because as we all know, the power of friendship can cure any sort of societal corruption or degradation!
