Every scene with RDJ or Tom Cruise is comedy gold - the "never go full retard" speech alone makes the movie worth watching. The rest, however, is pretty average.

I am so bored by most new releases I would gladly run to all of the spoof trailers in this. Matthew McConauauuwghey (one day I’ll figure that one out) looking at his son picture is the secret best moment. I am extremely bothered that the last time I watched this was 12 years ago, it just came out!

I recently rewatched this for the first time in awhile so I decided to rerank it. I actually probably laughed more this time around than before. Stillers direction and writing isn't actually bad, even if he didn't do it alone. Although Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise have the funniest lines. It's well-acted from just about everyone. I'd recommend it and say it's worth at least one shot.

A pretty good movie lifted to comedic excellence by a truly inspired performance from Downey Jr. This is the sharpest satire to hit cinema in years, and not just on Vietnam War movies, but on actors and the entire Hollywood system. Beyond Stiller, who's just passable, the cast is excellent: Nolte and Baruchel are especially funny, and the hate-on for Jack Black in the comments section is undeserved. Very quotable and very funny, with exciting action sequences. The best thing Stiller's ever done.

A ridiculous, tongue-in-cheek action/comedy that pokes some good fun at Hollywood. Ben Stiller was fine, Jack Black is useless, but the obvious highlight is Robert Downey Jr. The writing ranges from stupid to uproariously funny. Some of the references to Hollywood and other war movies were clever, but they packed in a bunch of needless cameos (Cruise is hilarious, though). It does start to run itself into the ground near the end, but overall this is a film with some satirical merit.

So far, Tropic Thunder is the comedy of the year. Much to my surprise, Stiller's generic gags are fresh, witty, and certainly well-played amongst a great cast of all-stars. The highlight is definitely Robert Downey Jr. but that was probably to be expected as he's the greatest talent of the main characters. The writing is especially sharp and it pokes fun at a lot of Hollywood's bigger flaws. This was a blast to watch and I can't wait to see it again.

Pure comedic hilarity that oozes with film and film celebrity satire. I don't think one would be able to really enjoy the film unless you "get" all of the aspects of film culture that it references. Some are pretty blatant (such as Jack Black's lampooning of Eddie Murphy) while others might be missed. This film does have a decent enough plot to hold it above being a garbage "____ Movie" and Downey Jr. is absolutely fantastic. A must see.

WARNING! Don't buy into glowing reviews of this movie. Tropic Thunder is one of those movies that will leave mature movie-goers feeling ripped off from a ticket purchase and eyeing the exit-door a few minutes into the movie. A movie that goes out of its way to be offensive, Tropic Thunder fails miserably with a lame script highlighted by juvenile, unsophisticated humor. You'll walk away from this one with disdain for the block of actors who participated in the movie.

You can smell the Coen on this one. Great satire of the movie business wrapped in a good comedy war movie in the style of Three Amigos etc. Everyone brings A game stuff to this one, particularly Downey who is on form at the moment. Not that he's ever off...

Go ahead, be offended. I don't mind. In fact, its all part of the joke -- a joke that works for about 90-minutes straight, making Tropic Thunder one of the funniest films of the year.

The Trailers and the initial battle are great, then things go downhill fast. Cruise and especially Downey Jr. threaten to kick-start the laughs with their cognisant performances, but the rest of the cast just fumble about, Black particularly clueless. The interminable, meandering plot promises a big finish, but delivers little. Thankfully Cruise provides a few final chuckles with his gyrations.

Apart from the hilarious first ten minutes, "Tropic Thunder" was a let down. It's fair to say it had its moments: Downey Jr. was great and Tom Cruise was freakin' golden !!!, but the jokes are silly, Jack Black in probably his worst role yet, and don't forget that you're dealing with "Ben Stiller comedy", which unsurprisingly falls flat. Forgettable and disappointing, too bad...

Ben Stiller is a closet art-house director, disguising spot-on social commentary and black satire beneath puerile, raucous humor, and a laser focus on enhancing and subverting actors' personas. Tobey Maguire's rosary molestation laughed me to the floor.

It is a big joke in Hollywood, laughing at himself. The cast chosen is the secret of the success of the film, mainly Downey Jr. in great stage, is hilarious and is the highlight of the film. Even Tom Cruise, is weird and funny. With great jokes, great performances and an impeccable technique, probably the best comedy of 2008.

Robert. Downey. Jr. Fuck that guy for being absolutely awesome in everything he's in, including this, ESPECIALLY this. Tropic Thunder is a huge surprise, in that it's a Ben Stiller movie that's both clever, and hilarious. The way it harpoons hollywood and big budget movies, can be subtle at times, or blatantly obvious, but it's always funny. The cast does a great job, especially RDJ who is goddamn perfect, and Cruise is good too.Opening trailers - amazing.I would totally watch Satan's Alley.

Tries to take the famous 'Stiller road' towards the average and forgettable, but is halted by Coogan blowing himself up for the cause, Cruise letting decorum be damned in the name of comedy and Robert Downey Jr. The latter deserves special praise: Kirk Lazarus is easily one of the funniest, most ridiculous and memorable characters in recent years, and his advice is as sound as it is quotable: Never go full retard.

Tropic Thunder is probably the one film which would be most correctly labeled as a guilty pleasure. Although there are flaws throughout the experience and some scenes get rather monotonous after a while, the constant low-calibur gags and mockeries of Hollywood society pull the film together. By far the best parts of the film are the humourous opening and fantastic ending sequences, as well as the major parts involving Downey Jr. Black may be considered a weak link, until you get the performance.

Sometimes hilarious comedy about a movie within a movie. The faux trailers that open the film offer just a glimpse of the laughs you'll be generating throughout this film. Ben Stiller does a great job, both in front and behind the camera, but the real laughs come from Robert Downey, Jr., who plays an actor so drawn into his work, he controversially altered his skin color to play a black man in the Vietnam war pic they're filming. Great fun all around.

Pretty damn funny. To echo what everyone else is saying, Downey Jr. and Cruise are the highlights, but everyone else holds their own. Maybe goes on for a little too long near the end, and isn't too piercing of a satire, but makes up for it from the sheer number of jokes.

There is much to love about Tropic Thunder and it sure hits the ground running with that brilliant fake trailer show. But somewhere along the line the laughs kinda fade especially when it comes to Stiller's beef head action star, a part he should have given to an actual one. Seriously: imagine Dolph Lundgren or Stallone in that part! Downey Jr. and Cruise steal the show.

For a Stiller comedy, this is very fresh and original. Some of the comedy is a bit too in-your-face, but for the most part it's hilarious. Really didn't expect to enjoy it so much, and it's nearly entirely the doing of Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. (who is made doubly awesome by his portrayal of the ultimate Oscar-baiting actor being nominated for an Oscar). Does not swing for the fences with its jokes the way it should though there are few if any real duds. The self-aware pokes at the crasser work of the film's stars, lacking real remorse, seem a little insincere. On the plus side, Downey's and Cruise's drastic, if superficial, transformations are refreshing coming from two actors who can afford to coast on their personae, and together they lift the film just barely into "pleasant surprise" territory.
