Lubitsch's humor is brilliant; it's like your grandfather telling you a dirty joke. Will always be in my all-time favorite comedies.

A brief, lean, hilarious film with great momentum and timing. This euphemistic psychology paves the way for later films under the thumb of censorship. It is glamorous and sophisticated, but grounded in worldly concern and base instinct. An acknowledgement of economic anxiety, and during the Depression, what's more desirable than wealth? Money is sex, but companionship is valuable. The film's great strength is that it comes by this insight without mushy sentiment or moralistic scolding.

Another fantastic comedy from Lubitsch. The film possesses a sensuality that surprises in its frankness, and that becomes one of the many things Lubitsch uses as a source of his comedy. The film's light touch and poetic camerawork create one of the most delightful comedies I've seen in some time . . . probably since the last Lubitsch film I saw.

I'll agree with jacobb1313 that Lubitsch's humor is rather like a grandfather telling a dirty joke but I must say that I'm less than enthralled by his oh-so-subtle-and-sophisticated "touch" which I think is dated and tiresome. While I didn't so much appreciate the humor, I did, however, think that 'Trouble in Paradise', with its swift pace and game delivery, was reasonably entertaining. For all-out Lubitsch brilliance, though, my recommendation is 'To Be or Not to Be'. Now, that's funny.

Great romantic comedy with witty dialogue and an amusing premise. A little silly at times but otherwise great.

Is the trouble found in the unfulfilled relationship between Gaston and Mariette? Or is Mariette herself the trouble, luring Gaston away from Lily? Perhaps, going further, the real trouble can be found in the final exchange between Gaston and Mariette, the trouble being: Who should Mariette arrest, an ordinary con-artist who steals a small amount of her wealth or a member of her own class who has stolen millions upon millions more? i.e., who's worse, the bank robber or the banks themselves?

What was the Lubitsch touch? Here's one answer. It's a film of talk, or innuendo, so theft is another idiom for sex. In which case, the moment when Francis simply takes off a heavy pearl necklace amounts to undressing. The drama of the film is a matter of which lady Gaston will settle with. And you could argue that this is a film that celebrates theft over loyalty. It is now regarded, with justice, as one of the markers in American comedy - after all, isn't it crazy to prefer money to love?

Just a little bit disappointing for one of Lubitsch's most celebrated works. It has his famous "touch" and all, it's charming and clever, but just not quite enough to figure among his truly best works.

Rewatch. Few women on film have ever been as sexy and sumptuous as Kay Francis is here. Also contains what may be my favorite use of stairs in a film outside of Sunset Boulevard.

One of Lubitsch's true masterpieces. Like most comedies, this one really must be seen in a theatre with an appreciative, responsive audience on hand, but do watch it at home if that's your only option.

A wicked, sexy comedy with a worldly-wise European sensibility. Herbert Marshall is elegance personified, and Hopkins and Francis each has her own kind of charm.

Charming comedy with some clever dialogue and great chemistry between the leads. I probably owe it some consolation points since so many of its jokes were pretty familiar to me, having been stolen by later films.

I really had this film wrong. I leave my original review for historical purposes, but today my opinion is that this is a delightful study of hypocrisy, about which Lubitsch is a bit more of a fan than I am. (12/ix/22) The Gospel of Cool, as preached by the European Ernst Lubitsch, is full of fine cinematic techniques, but the story is rather lame, and undermines the proverb that there is no honour among thieves. It was pretty clever having the two thieves who fall in love with each other, and this helps lead into some clever situations... But this movie somehow didn't do very much for me.

One of the best under-90 minute movies out there. Within a short running time, you have a heist/sabotage, comedy, and romance with great chemistry between the entire cast. I know some classic films take a while to take off but this one's pacing is really well done.

Perfectly fine, very light and breezy with great performances and fantastic dialog. Some of the comedy falls a bit, but it's mostly because the movie is 82 years old and humour is often the hardest thing to stay relevant over time. Still, there are some really great bits, especially the back and forth showcasing of their deft of theft.

Lubitsch! You son of a bitch, Lubitsch! For making such an extraordinary wonderful comedy. Naughty, wicked and so gentlemanly elegant! Herbert Marshall and his way of speaking can melt any heart. But of course it's his swindling ways that turns Miriam Hopkins all wild! And the shining Kay Francis loves all the attention she gets. There is so much one can say about this priceless gem, but I'm not gonna ramble on and just let the satisfying feeling selfishly sink in without sharing any more....

This is an overlooked movie from the 1930ies. Considering that this movie is from the 30ies it has a refreshing amount of sex, low morale and funny dialouge. It's smart, it's sexy and very funny. Give yourself a treat and watch this gem of a film. Two thieves decide to steal their way through Europes upper class. On the way they lie, cheat and backstab each other. What's not to love?

Today, this Depression-era masterwork transports us back to the performance styles of the late '20s and early '30s, but it also preserves that period's dream of swankiness-- of achieved grace that only looks effortless.

Effervescent hilarity; Lubitsch's economic filmmaking eschews the useless bits so that he can get as many great lines and subtle gags in there as possible. The performances are really excellent. This is a totally old-fashioned form of comedy, but it still works beautifully today. Perfect ending, too.

There's on off-color orientalist joke that sours things a little bit, but it's still a madcap tour de force that kept me on my seat. The innuendo isn't as strong, or as funny, as it was on Love Parade, but Lubitsch more than makes up for that by having stronger characters, a deeper story, and some great understanding of film language. It's amazing how much info is conveyed through only a few shots of clock faces, doors opening and people gazing through windows.

I couldn't care less about a thief couple and their relation to an idiot rich woman in the time of Great Depression. Maybe the problem is with me, but I didn't see any "touch", "cuteness" or "comedy" in this dull and uninteresting movie which takes itself too serious. As if the issue of capitalism-robbery-marriage was too subtle or clever. You can't hide a critique under a narrative successfully if you have no critical distance or a new language invented for that trick. Definition of overrated.

I love the way these two characters are constantly bickering and picking each other's pockets. A very elaborate romance story with many twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing. I'll have to watch this twice to be sure I got it all.

Nothing like a light comedy about high-class jewel thieves-cum-lovers in 1930s Paris to charm your ass. How better to meet-cute than to have your hero steal a woman's garter off her leg before the two fall into each other's arms, enraptured by each other's pickpocketing skills? Besides that, it's sexy in the way only a pre-code film could be, all barely concealed euphemisms and double-entendres. ("If I were your father, I'd spank you." "If you were my secretary?" "The same." "You're hired.")

"Trouble in Paradise" is a bodacious, charming, brazen, vivacious comedy of manners with a magnetic leading trio in Miriam Hopkins, Kay Francis and Herbert Marshall. Based on a theatrical play, it retains a certain farcical theatricality, which is elevated by the unmistakably satirical mood. The dialogues are a lot of fun, oozing wit and playfulness, and the excellent direction, paired with that crime rom-com hybrid of a script, keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen in the end.

Very good example of a romantic comedy which was probably pretty unique for the time but is nothing special plot-wise now. It's the now standard con man falls for his mark story (and in this case he's working with a con woman as well.) It's very well directed and there are some very good shots (there's a shot where the camera moves from one window to another that is very technically impressive.) The script is great, too. "I wouldn't fall for another man if he was the biggest crook on Earth!"
