Eddie Dodd is a burnt out former civil rights lawyer who now specializes in defending drug dealers. Roger Baron, newly graduated from law school, has followed Eddie's great cases and now wants to learn at his feet. Something about settling for the greater good! Boooo boooo, eighties music yeah-yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. The performances were good, the story not so solid, but the thematic ideas were nice.

Begins pretty low-key and promises an intriguing and subtle investigation-cum-courtroom-drama, but, very unfortunately, it devolves into something overblown and contrived. While many note the shocking pony-tail sported by Woods, he could have rocked it if the film was any better imo.

Despite a great performance by James Woods as Eddie Dodd I could never get over how horrendously awful his ponytail is. True Believer certainly has good moments in it but I found the core story to be a bit too much. Additionally the courtroom scenes frequently become unbelievable as the judge manages to let the lawyers get away with pretty much any outburst the melodrama requires. Still it's not a half bad redemption story.

A solid script and a home run performance by James Woods make this Legal drama a stand-out among others of its genre.

James Woods is the king of slime, but this earnest portrayal of pony-tailed-lawyer is very good. A great "we got them" legal thriller with plenty of twists. The aforementioned pony tail was, in fact, snubbed that Oscar season.
