The Coens are really on a roll, aren't they? True Grit is full of great characters played by a a brilliant cast. Steinfeld has a solid performance, and the dialogue between Damon and Bridges is phenomenal. True Grit might not have the seriousness and darker themes of No Country for Old Men, but it makes up for it with western flair and the typical Coens humor. Another very solid film from the duo.

Just a great, straight-forward Western that was beautifully filmed and directed. The dialogue pops (as in any Coen Bros. film), the action is sharp and the scenery is delectable. Young Hailee Steinfeld is the true star here, outdoing even Bridges and Damon. Overall, slight changes from the original ending do not disappoint, though the flash-forward final scene was unnecessary.

This film exemplifies everything about the Coen Brothers being the Dad Rock of Cinema. You get their usual tropes: The American Dream and a reimagined West where Jeff Bridges is ornerier than John Wayne. And those touchstones give their target audience exactly what they want: watching a character who is in the right not be reminded of the mistakes of his Confederate past, all while yelling at a whippersnapper. The coolest thing about it is seeing a young Hailee Steinfeld get her start.

While certainly very funny (thanks in large part to Bridges' performance), True Grit lacks the philosophical weight, the original vision, and the dark edge that distinguishes so much of the Coen Brothers best films, like Barton Fink and No Country for Old Men. On it's own, it's a decent Western, but it's a bit of a disappointment considering who made it. The ending is beautiful.

The Coens most play it straight here, to great effect; this may not bring anything new to the western, but it does operate at a high level in all its elements. And it's surprisingly lighter in tone than you might expect, infused with more of the humor that characterizes Fargo and Barton Fink as opposed to No Country. Anybody who saw the latter won't be surprised to find the Coens right at home here.

A Western that deconstructs & undermines its men characters at nearly every opportunity in favor of raising up an avatar of feminine strength notable for its single-minded bloodlust. Its villains aren't evil so much as stupid, weak & cowardly, & swept asunder by force wielded incommensurately, a lip service to justice that takes a significant personal toll on its practitioners. But compared to the Coens' last few, a beacon of hope.

For exquisite craftmanship, look no further than the Coens. Bridges is completely bad-ass as Rooster Cogburn, Damon quite hilarious as LaBoeuf and Hailee Steinfeld holds her own against both of them as the persistent Mattie Ross. These are great characters and it was a joy to see them interact. As well as, certainly not least, taking in the dialogue (not sure who can take more credit for it, the brothers or Charles Portis who wrote the novel). Excellent film - but I found the ending fairly flat.

Though this has certainly been advertised as a dramatic film I'd be lying if I said I wasn't howling with laughter at multiple points during the film. That is a testament to the mastery of the Coen brothers who are able to make a film that is deadly dark and serious while still being tremendously funny. I've never seen the original but I can say with assurance that the entire cast is brilliant. Hailee Steinfield has a tremendous career ahead of her.

Considering a nomination for Hailee Steinfeld for Breakout Actress, and while the book's been written on Mr. Bridges, his praises cannot be sung highly enough. Incredibly breathtaking, this whole film, for obvious reasons (the way it was shot, the performances, time period, etc.) and for less-obvious reasons - one scene in particular, where Damon rips Steinfeld off her horse and spanks her, had the audience just *quiet*, and there was tension, nobody really knew how to react. One of 2010's best.

It's the humor of the Coens and the performances of Bridges and Steinfeld that really save "True Grit". Not a great western tale nor a very climatic one. The flash forward is particularly horrible. Some talent also felt wasted in what is a disappointingly average film.

Takes a while to get going with too much time spent on showcasing the verbal skills of young Mattie. 325 dollars? 200, 250, 300, 320? The first 45 min. are intermittently fun, but spend too much time reiterating obvious character traits. As soon as we head out into the wild and Bridges and Damon get to joust on words, grit and gunslinging skills, it soars. The pitch-black humor and the light take on the violent events make for an enjoyable, but also slightly forgettable Coen entry.

You might laugh but I found the general lack of contractions to be one of my favorite things about the film. I need to read the book to see if was an invention of Portis or the Coens. Steinfeld deserves more attention than she is getting, but it is easy to be overshadowed by names like Bridges, Damon, and Brolin (he was only there for 10 mins). Could have done without seeing her as a bitter old bitch though, I would rather remember her as the spunky teen version. Very funny too, darkly funny.

Better acting and craft then the original, and the trademark Coen dark humor fits in perfectly, along with their ear for accents and dialogue. Bridges' past-his-prime alcoholic is played 4 humor here, unfortunately not much merits more than a chuckle. There's also 2 instances where good guys r kept alive 4 no discernible reason other than 2 move in a predetermined direction. It's well-crafted & there's a thrill of the unknown watching Hailee's steely & unyielding 14 yo in action, but there's also something 2 rote about the proceedings once the hunt begins that doesn't allow 4 the sparks of unpredictability that make a good movie great.

Solid western that manages to strike a nice balance between the old-fashioned adventure and modern restraint. The characters in the film are strong, frequently admirable, yet realistically flawed, and all the more intriguing for it. Bridges, Steinfeld, and Damon all deliver strong performances, and the snappy dialogue was a nice classic touch. It never struck me as particularly profound or imaginative, but it was fine craftmanship from the Coens and worth seeing.

Rock solid Western. Certainly doesn't have the menace or the unreal tension of something like No Country, but there's an easy joy to it and more laughs than people might expect. Certainly the best Western I've seen this year (though I'm not sure just how many I've seen...). This was much funnier than expected though I guess I should have expected some screwball humor. Much better than the original. Bridges and Damon are great, but the real story here is how good Haille Steinfeld is. Not only does she hold her own, but she has a few scenes that steal the show. Surprisingly sparse re-telling of the John Wayne "classic" (I bet it sucks) that had more laughs than I was expecting but also felt a little light on drama. For the Cohens', lets face it, this is about as conventional as you're going to get, and I have to admit, that aspect was disappointing, as were a couple of highly improbable coincidences that tested my suspension of disbelief. Fortunately, Steinfeld is great though and Bridges, as usual, brightens every scene he's in. "You're not LeBeef."

True Grit is a great story of bravery and stubbornness. The fact that the whole story revolves around Mattie and her bloodlust, shows an interesting female-driven Western with amazing character development. Coupled with the fantastic Rooster Cogburn character and the awkward LeBoeuf, perhaps an even greater conception than Cogburn, it was truly an enjoyable piece despite dragging a bit at some points. It is a successful modern Western in a world of film where effects and grandeur is taking over.

I haven't seen yet the original True Grit and I am not sure yet if it really needed a reboot, but what I saw on the screen was awesome. I really liked the atmosphere and the mood, the imagery work was splendid plus the snow scenes added some mystery and ambiguity, which I always loved about Coens movies. Sometimes I just don't get the Coens. First they stuff Bridges' mouth with potatoes, then ask him to talk endlessly. This becomes particularly funny after Damon's character has an accident and Brolin is introduced, transforming 'True Grit' into (another) Oscar chasing speech impediment movie. The tone is too light, the story is dull and drawn out (stop talking!), and this is the Coen's poorest film since 'O Brother, Were Art Thou?' if not altogether. Another Coen brother's quirk-fest to be sure but this is a masterful remake with plenty of humor and sardonic wit. Hailee Steinfeld aka Mattie Ross even manages to steal scenes from Bridges and Damon. The Coen's could have easily turned to camp or light "children's" comedy mimicking adult dialog but she holds her own with the great adaptation/rewrites the Coen's have done. I wouldn't say this is a re-imaging of the genre as much as it is an odd perspective from the Coen's take on the world.

Good child acting is a rare thing, and great child acting rarer still. The young Miss. Steinfeld certainly rises to the calibre of her colleagues, delivering an outstanding performance of a truly engaging character, just like the other main characters in this story. Couple this with good cinematography and a decent crack at dialogue and you get a solid film. However, it has to be admitted that you come out of it feeling like it was missing something. It's hard to define what, but it was missing.

At the time I didn't realize how beautiful Deakins' cinematography is, nor how wonderfully it's crafted. Fixes almost all of the issues of the original 1969 film, especially the pacing. The Coens will often set out to make one of two types of films: one with a deeper, though-provoking layer or one that's purely top-notch entertainment value. True Grit is the latter. Substance-wise it's not as profound as, say, A Serious Man and certainly not No Country for Old Men, but it's a classy and thrilling western with their typical dark humor. Jeff Bridges provides the most fun, as expected, but it might be Steinfeld who outshines everyone.

Fucking excellent. I like the 1969 version, but even though they mostly stuck to the same story and even the same dialogue, the Coens come up with something far more subtle, grim and ultimately real. Not the best they've done in recent years, but much like in No Country For Old Men, they take someone else's story, stay true to it, and still somehow make it their own. And Hailee Steinfeld is the second-best teenage western heroine I've seen this year after Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone.

It's a classical Western in many respects, but with the Coens at the helm it's by no means a standard Western even if it's the closest to genre purity they've gone. The craftsmanship at display is incredible, it's almost as if we are genuinely transported to the times depicted, like all good period films should aspire to achieve. This side of an unexpectedly horrible flashforward, True Grit pleases all but the most impatient movie-goer, a rather difficult endeavor for the risque, noir filmmaking duo. What the Coens do away with - the subtle, dark undertones that characterize Fargo and No Country - is cunningly replaced by a more prosaic, accessible facade, backed by a slew of charming characters packaged up into a cleverly disguised coming-of-age story. The suprisingly funny screenplay really is astonishingly good, & while Damon, Bridges and Brolin are excellent in their own right, it is the amazing Steinfield who steals the show. Visually this is great too, and while the Coen's may have scaled back their surrealist tendencies in order to make what is very much a traditional Western, there are still little hints of their unique pacing & style everywhere, & they never end a movie conventionally do they!?

Great western, but to be honest I don't see a Coen brothers hallmark.

This is a typical Coen movie, a boring story with a couple of great supporting characters made even more boring by The Coen's almost Buddhist approach to story pace.

Hailee Steinfeld shines in a Coen brothers movie that seems a bit more palatable to larger audiences: while mantaining that ironic punch, it entertains like an average mainstream film, through Bridges/Damon's familiar perfomances.

Expertly done with absolutely no room to quarrel at a technical level. That being said this film's charms and likable simplicity don't save it from being more forgettable and less re-watchable than almost everything else the Coens have crafted. Still a great film.

"True Grit" is quite similar to "Unforgiven" in that they are both instant classic Westerns that are completely driven by excellent performances instead of action set-pieces or other cliches of the genre. While still feeling like a Coen brothers film, it's definitely their most straightforward to date. Bridges and Steinfeld have perfect chemistry and are definite highlights. By far the best Western in recent years, although not as perfect as I was expecting. Use subtitles.

'True Grit' lacks pace and wit (hey, it rhymes!) ... In addition young miss Steinfeld's performance is way overrated and a bit forced, not to say annoying in the long run.

Not being a big fan of westerns, but being a big fan of the Coens I really didn't know what to expect from this one. I have to say though, I was not disappointed. Everthing from the cinematography to the witty back-and-forth dialouge between Bridges and Damon is great. Bridges is amazing in the role as Cogburn, and I have to say that this was probably the best role I have ever seen Matt Damon in. The flash-forward scene at the end did seem a bit "off", but other than that, I have no complaints.

Western is a bit of a favorite genre of mine, and I'm thrilled not only to see more classical westerns being released (if Cowboys & Aliens could possibly count as that), but that such competent filmmakers are here to put it together. True Grit is a somber affair, lifted by stellar acting, an awesome screenplay and the seemingly effortless Coen flare, to the point where it makes a mockery of the 1969 John Wayne film. Rarely does a remake make utterly redundant the original. Very solid effort.

A beautifully directed and highly entertaining Western with some solid performances. But it doesn't really give you the feeling that it was made by the Coens. Well, there was the darkly humorous dialogue but the rest didn't feel very distinctive, a characteristic you would expect from a Coen Brothers movie.

Like "Night in the Hunter," this is a modern fairy tale that remains true to the Grimm reality of the primitive imagination. Damon isn't that hot, but he's light years better than Glenn Campbell, and Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges (much better than Darby and Wayne!) are simply wonderful.

When the Coens announced this as their next project it was a huge let down for me, as I loved their last two movies, darkly comic ventures into the absurd that they were. A straight western seemed like two steps back. Well, two steps back it may very well be, but they're taken in such asured stride that I'll go along for the journey. It doesn't hurt that I'm an absolute manwhore for westerns, of course, but it's a very fine genre piece in its own right.

The first part is very good, full of hilarious lines and with superb performances by Bridges, Damon and Steinfeld, while the second one is merely a typical western: well-directed and energetic but unimportant. It's a fun movie from the very beginning to the very end but it misses the Coens' weird weirdness and never becomes special.

I like it. Coen brothers just know how movies should be made(although this one isn't among their best), Bridges-Damon comic duet is just fun to watch and H. Steinfeld kicked off her career really good here. Too bad we don't get to know antagonists as good as leads.

This is no surprise that this is another outstanding film directed by the Coen Brothers'. Hailee Steinfeld deserves to be nominated for an Oscar, she is outstanding. Jeff Bridges is excellent in his role. Even if you are not a Coen Brothers' fans still check out this film.

Bridges is occasionally hard to understand but otherwise it's an excellent yarn, a Western/anti-Western that's memorable, entertaining and humorous in the right places. Steinfeld is a revelation, easily outdoing both Bridges and Damon. However, despite a few quirky moments, the film lacks the idiosyncratic flair that marks the best of the Coens' output. This kind of take on the Western feels a little old hat by now, and I hoped for something a bit more unique. Still, it's a mighty fine film.

The Coens continue to be obsessed with Providence and revenge and conflicting moral value systems and charming ugly characters... but between that and its exceptional technical pedigree, the film never becomes something greater than the sum of its parts. There's probably a moral "In the Everlasting Arms" of God (repeat, ad nauseam) and some missing body parts, where it differs from the original film, but it just seems either too oblique or too vapid to be truly memorable.
