An overrated movie. It's disappointing because you can tell there is a really cool character there that is rather poorly written and, lets be honest, less than adequately acted. I was stunned to see that John Wayne won an Oscar for this (especially over Hoffman or Voight from Midnight Cowboy) but I imagine it was one of those "career" awards instead of for the performance itself. Despite it's shortcomings there is enough action and enough one-liners to keep you interested for at least one watch.

Every few years I watch a John Wayne movie and I still haven't gotten any closer to understanding what people saw in him. Hopper outacts him in five minutes and he was probably still coming down from the sheets of acid he crammed into his mouth filming Easy Rider.

This type of PG good guy western isn't really my bag, but this is one of the better examples of the type. The Duke's screen presence goes a long way, and Duvall and Hopper are both good in small roles.

One of John Wayne's best westerns. He brings Rooster Cogburn to life. His chemistry with Kim Darby is astounding. This is one of the all time classics of American Cinema, not just the Western Genre. The only thing I can say negative about this movie is that Glen Campbell's performance isn't as strong as Wayne and Darby's. Either way, you must seee this movie!

All around great western with an award winning performance from the Duke and a nice appearance from Robert Duvall. Dennis Hopper has a brief but memorable part too. The true highlight of True Grit is the wonderful outdoor locations and photography, specifically the location in the denouement.

Wayne is very good, but as a whole there are much better Western's out there that this. Watching "True Grit" you mainly get the feeling that there is a lot of wasted potential here and it doesn't quite make the most of all its components.

Good story and characters held back by awkward pacing and some bad acting. Has enough action and adventure to entertain, at least. Wayne's acting was good but not enough that it deserved to win the Oscar, and Hopper's cameo part is pretty good. The Coens did do this a lot better.

Very similar to the Coens' remake. It lifts a lot of the same good dialogue from Portis' novel. However, it is, of course, less stylishly made. The cast is good but never great. Watch the remake first, and try to avoid catching one shortly after the other.

The original TRUE GRIT boasts one thing neither the remake nor any film of the last 35 years can: the presence of John Wayne. And if Rooster Cogburn isn't quite Wayne's best performance (it didn't deserve the Oscar he got for it), he still has a great time with it. But Kim Darby makes for a shrill Mattie, and Glen Campbell for a dopey LaBoeuf. And the film as a whole is generally played too light, too safe (and drags because of it); tellingly, it earned a G rating. Best for devotees of the Duke.

It's easy to see with hindsight why The Coens remade this - this is a devilish, sly, subversive little script that packs a whallop. Mattie Ross' acting doesn't quite match her character's motivation and conviction, but each character is extremely memorable regardless (especially Duvall, whose enigma-type reminds strongly of Ed Harris). The plot's loss of innocence dynamic is pleasantly troubling, as G-rated westerns go.

This movie is a lot of fun, mostly because of John Wayne who is just the coolest. The girl annoyed me at first but I got used to her. Also it's cool to see Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper in these early roles.

Definitely less than its reputation. Wayne is okay I guess, but he's better in "The Shootist." Hell, even "Big Jake" is better than this. Glen Campbell can't act and shouldn't try.

John Wayne turns in a good performance as drunken lawman Rooster Cogburn, but most of the other actors are mediocre. Worst of all of them is Kim Darby, playing the other main character of the film, Mattie Ross, whose father is killed in the first five minutes. Her acting is incredibly wooden, and it doesn't help that her dialogue sounds more like it would be written for Data of Star Trek: TNG than a young frontier girl. I can't much see why the Coen brothers decided this needed a remake.

John Wayne is an American Legend, and this is him at his best, playing drunken US Marshall Rooster Cogburn. He plays the character in a well balanced manner, giving equal amounts of comedic relief and wonderful dramatic timing. The only performance for which Wayne ever won an Academy Award is by far the best I have seen from him. Such a great film, great story, great acting, great landscapes. True Grit is what I define as a true American Classic.

Wonderful, classic western with Wayne giving an uncharacteristically relaxed, self-deprecating performance as drunken lawman Rooster Cogburn. Campbell is merely a place-holder, but film belongs to Darby who makes Mattie Ross an unforgettable, often hilarious force of nature, and a unique and distinctive character. Excellent early performances by Duvall and Hopper combined with beautiful scenery meld to create one of Wayne's best 'starring' vehicles.

I liked it well enough. The Duke was a good Rooster, obviously a great choice in those days. Not Oscar worthy though. Loses points for the rather awful portrayal of Mattie Ross, too soft. Probably the worst parts of the film are when they try to interject dialogue lifted from Mattie Ross' inner dialouge in the book, it just doesn't fit.

More elaborate and considerably better than the Coen Brothers remake of the same book. Still, I wouldn't recommend it to non-genre-fans. It's implausible and has all the generic trappings. John Wayne is a "teddy bear" here, as one reviewer described it, despite the attempted pirate look. Glen Campbell's acting is nothing to write home about either.

For a movie called True Grit, it's not exactly the grittiest of westerns, but it is quite entertaining and has a number of fairly exciting moments (the last 15-20 minutes is where it shines). Also, I might just be a bad judge, but I didn't think Kim Darby was that bad. Granted, I haven't read the book, but she was feisty, headstrong, and had some great lines. Glenn Campbell, on the other hand, was just plain awful.

You know, after watching the remake, this version is kinda cheesy and boring. The girl in this version doesn't hold a candle to Hailee Steinfeld and while John Wayne was pretty good (after all, he DID win the Oscar), I just think Jeff Bridges was much better. Sue me for hating on a classic.

The remake is better, but this one is pretty fun too. Wayne is hilarious, especially when he's insulting Glen Campbell, whose utter lack of acting talent makes it even funnier. Plus, Robert Duvall and my man Dennis Hopper are in it, at this point on the cusp of their New Hollywood stardom.

It's dedication to the book is respectable but problematic. While it's nice seeing a lot of Portis' dialogue being used verbatim, his plotting is too slow for film. Hathaway's direction is pedestrian, the cinematography is flat and dull, and I wanted to punch Glen Campbell in his stupid face every time he opened his mouth. Wayne's okay but is really just playing John Wayne. Darby's good but doesn't have the confidence of Mattie Ross. Last half hour makes up for the interminable first 3/4ths.

It's a good story with a lot of spunk and spirit. The dialogue was witty, especially between Rooster and Mattie. John Wayne was good, but I think the movie suffers from some poor casting choices (Kim Darby as Mattie and Glen Campbell as La Boeuf in particular). The filming locations were gorgeous.

Charisma is really something, and True Grit manages to enchant and entertaint with so little -- Wayne doesn't give his best, but delivers a gentle performance, while everything else sounds just dated and miles behind any Ford or Hawks film. Still, it's kind of nice to see Duvall and Hopper in such brief but remarkable performances.

A pleasant way to pass some time. Filmed in some very picturesque mountains in Colorado and California, they, unfortunately, look nothing like Oklahoma, where most of the action takes place. All those days traveling on horseback and the weather was gorgeous EVERY single day--what luck! Kim Darby seems like she would have been much more at home on a TV show, but manages to make one not hate her character--a real accomplishment.

Hard to believe, but I enjoyed a John Wayne western, and because of him rather than in spite of him! His character is entertaining for both his good qualities and his bad ones, and it helps that his role is opposite a kid who is both admirable and annoying, so one can sympathize with his surly persona. For the rest, the film has some good western scenes, but it does feel a bit underdeveloped at times, just hitting the marks and relying on its characters to carry it.

Of all the John Wayne films I've seen, I'm not sure if this particular performance is Oscar-worthy. That being said, this is still a solid movie that has some fantastic cinematography and is has rare moments of genuine humanity from the Duke.

While True Grit is a great story, I do find myself liking this quite a bit less than many other Wayne outings. Rooster Cogburn is essentially a slight more sour version of Wayne himself, and I really can't believe this ended up being his Oscar win. The performance, for me, is grating. I did love seeing Hopper and Duvall show up in supporting roles. This is a fine western, but not a great one.

John Wayne'in Oscar ödülü kazandığı film. Babasının öldüreni yakalamak isteyen kızımız, 2 kovboy ile yaşadığı macera. Engrossing from start to finish, and not really what I expected. Much more charm than grit, but it's all about the dialogue; the chemistry between Wayne and Darby, her clever quips and delightfully bold character. There are times where the script is almost too well crafted, to the point where lines feel taken straight from the pages of a book (and indeed, they were), but in general it's well delivered, snappy and satisfying.
