An educational biopic featuring some great acting and a few tremendous individual moments, Trumbo is a movie that hopes to inspire its audience members to stand up for their principles and values - regardless of the repercussions. And while it does that, to an extent, it often feels too Biopic 101 to truly captivate and instill that feeling in those watching. Bryan Cranston is great in the lead role and the film will teach audiences about a dark period in Hollywood's life.

It simultaneously feels a bit too long and a bit underdeveloped - by which I mean, to try and cover 21 years in a two-hour movie is a very difficult task, and it shows here in the fragmented feel of the movie. Nevertheless, the script's likable sense of humor, the story behind it, and some truly great acting (particularly from Cranston) make this well worth seeing.

A honorable and educational biographical drama on the screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and how he stubbornly managed to expose the injurious and unreasonability under the blacklist. It's well acted, especially Cranston delivers a strong dependent performance. It got wit and cleverness but struggles to inspire and doesn't really achieve any of the greatness Trumbo could do.

Obviously a much more complex story than what is let on here. The Preminger scenes are entertaining but very hokey. Would've liked to know a bit more about Trumbo's daughter and her activism that was portrayed in the movie. John Goodman despite doing what he usually does was very funny. Best scene was probably Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Cranston in the mailroom cuz it was the only one with any true feeling.

Cranston sold the hell out of this performance, but the themes in Trumbo are razor thin. Despite it's sympathy towards its "communist" characters, it oddly feels like capitalist propaganda. The film's early arc is lost during the second act, and its conclusion contradicts it in frustrating ways.

Hollywood loves a movie that makes it seem like they're all fighting for a change in the world against the evils of government/censorship/etc. Really neuters the radical politics some of these men and women had or makes the ones who are more radical seem idiotic (C.K.'s character). A fine movie, just dishonest.

In in its own way of depicting its main character as a real hero, "Trumbo" is the ideal Hollywood product that loves to idealize characters instead of just depicting them as flawed, complex, real persons -- persons of such a beloved and well-publicized industry as the film industry. In this sense, it's quietly disturbing that this type of bio will be better remembered by its impersonations -- Wayne, Douglas, Preminger, Robinson; and also, John Goodman swinging a baseball bat at commie hunter.

An entertaining enough watch, that I happened to stumbled across at the perfect time while in the rare mood for some light dramatic biography/history "fun". So honestly while I was procrastinating my own history homework, I wasn't being too critical of the history or the movie, but instead just let the film steadily wash over me as Bryan Cranston and his mustache slowly charmed me into watching the whole thing.

As exciting as it was to see this and Bryan Cranston at TIFF, this is a subpar biodrama that's tailor made for the lowest common denominator. The writing in particular is filled with useless platitudes, unidimensional characters, and conclusions you could telegraph 5 seconds in. The directing is just as dull. It's just the worst kind of Oscar bait.

Essentially a TV movie that is elevated by pretty solid filmmaking and remarkable performances. The use of archival and stock footage, and the integration with new footage was great. It didn't hurt that, it depicted a very fascinating part of history. Bryan Cranston absolutely melts into the role.

A Hollywood screenwriter goes broke fighting for his principles. Sounds like a biopic slog, and sometimes it is. Luckily, Trumbo has a powerhouse Bryan Cranston to light a fire under the moldier clichés in John McNamara's script.

I don't know how much the film stretches the truth as I don't know much about Trumbo at all. I do know that this film is well acted, especially by Cranston, and I quite enjoyed the plot. Has some interesting portrayals of Hollywood names. Of course, there is also John Goodman.

No this isn't about an elephant that can fly... it's about a blacklisted Hollywood writer in the 40's. This is an interesting movie to watch today, considering Hollywood is conjuring up their own red scare. I wonder when they made this movie, if they knew they would look foolish just a year later shouting that Russian's were around every corner? Still, if Communism is your thing, go for it... it's a free country. I'll feel free to ignore you as it is your right to ignore me...

I've never heard a more apt title for a movie, because Cranston's performance as Trumbo literally is the movie. Thankfully though, he delivers a performance worthy of the vast amounts of screentime. What ultimately keeps me from rating this film higher is that it suffers from hindsight being 20/20. The audience could have greatly benefitted from a better understanding of the motives of Hedda Hopper's fervent pursuance of the blacklist.

nice, really really good, a daughter, wife, son, that leaderly-style of commanding orders, all to achieve a better life, The understanding of the fact by Trumbo that losing for the right reasons is still losing, & one must never lose, always try to win in any way (survival-mode) possible (i watched it at speed of 1.80 x till 75 % of the movie, dec it to normal speed, but its worth watching the whole of it at 1x.

Trumbo (2015) was a movie targeting perfectly my love of classic films. Loved how poor light John Wayne & Hedda Hopper came out of this blacklist witch hunt. Duke has probable never been a bigger villain then how he was portrayed here! The formula is namedropping, but they presented a strong enough personal story to not let that stand in the way of the gimmick of Hollywood tributes/bashing. Bryan Cranston as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, gave one of my favorite performances of the year!

Unsurprisingly, Louis C.K. gets the best joke in this surprisingly witty film. Cranston, meanwhile, gets an Oscar nom for showing off his bare ass, only to lose to Dicaprio for devouring a raw slab of bison's liver. ACTING.

The Story of Dalton Trumbo was presented in an interesting and progressive manner. The film correctly depicts the false FBI accusations and the struggles of Trumbo throughout the process. I especially enjoyed the characters transformation after his time in prison and being able to resurface after his encounters with Otto Preminger and Kirk Douglas.

Bryan Cranston completely disappears in this role. 'Trumbo' does a great job of showing the impact for something that seems trivial, yet never feel so heavy that it's unenjoyable. I'm a sucker for movies about Hollywood, especially this era, so there's definitely a bias on my end.

I can remember leaving the theater entertained, but a while later I can't remember a damn thing about the movie. The only individual moments I can recall are Louis C.K. staring into a lake, Cranston in a bathtub, and maybe him shouting "Jesus take the wheel" at some point, but that might have happened in Breaking Bad

I really enjoyed this fascinating piece of Hollywood history, and American history in general. Bryan Cranston and the rest of the cast are all very good, and I thought the film was well-cast overall. It looks nice, and the screenplay's pretty good, and I'm surprised it didn't get more attention at the Oscars, considering the subject matter. Anyway, I liked it, and I think it's totally worth a watch.

Although it may be a rather conventional biopic Jay Roach's fast paced direction and a mostly excellent ensemble cast mean that Trumbo doesn't outstay it's welcome. The subject matter is also extremely interesting which helps the film's cause no end.

I gave this bonus points because I sort of relate to the main character due to his situation, but I thought it was rather cheesy at times and, most importantly, Cranston's performance was irredeemably distracting compared to everyone else, as if the main character was an alien, or constantly making an impression, while everyone else acted like a regular human being. Don't know if this is my fault for not really knowing much about the real Trumbo, but surely the intended effect was not this.

Cranston portraying Trumbo might one of my favorite roles of all time, there is something strong, sharp, charming, fatherly and warm in the portrayal. Thematically not greatly explored, maybe for a reason, and cinematographically just adequate. This movie would be perfect if it wouldn't had been for some really awkward performances (C.K. topping it) and insta-production feel I can't put a finger on. If this movie was 60 minutes longer I would mind bit and I truly enjoyed it, but I'm biased.
