The competing husband and wife voiceovers that open the 1953 Mikio Naruse melodrama Wife set up a character dialectic that never comes to fruition and though the title suggests the resulting imbalance may be intentional, the film still plays out as a deeply flawed examination of marital discord. An odd movie with enigmatic characters about how several individuals respond to marital breakdown, infidelity, and the feeling that something has gone awry, that relationships should be better than they are. Ultimately, it makes no judgments and offers no answers – just a sense of lives unfolding in an inexorable, uncanny and tragic way towards ends both bitter and insipid. Trains appear in two scenes, and another scene features the sound of a train rattling by: all occur at significant moments.
