The premise is quite brilliant, but it overextends its sentimental reach at some point. The animation is decent.

Drowning in a see of sadness and painful memories.kato spreads more charme in 12 minutes than other directors in their whole career.

A remarkably beautiful sweeping glance at life retreating away from us: leaving submerged memories and an inevitable cold end. Even the beautiful moments are truly sad. A bit of a kick right to the heart.

Nice animation and a touching story but it didn't feel all that special to me.

Fuck. This is a deeply sad short. We watch an old man swim down through his building, which has been flooded like the rest of his town, and we see him relive some of his most precious memories. While they are happy in spirit, they're bittersweet because of his solitude, having only the memories of his once eventful life. The metaphor of the submerged building (and having to build layers on to survive) is not exactly subtle, but it is incredibly potent. Fuck, again.

Another short film that's science fiction turned into visual poetry. Sad and sweet

It's animated like an impressionism art frame: visually dazzling and meaningful.

This short is all about warmth and nostalgia, with a gentle touch of the bittersweet in order to prevent the tale from brimming over with sentiment. What is impressive is that the style and beauty of this short far exceeds the emotional depth that many films strive for, and it does it all in a mere fraction of the time and with no dialogue at all. Everything about this was pretty perfect.

Nicely animated, but seems kinda calculatingly sentimental.

It's kind of a stretch to classify this as "anime," but here's some more proof that animation from Japan isn't completely stuck in the kiddie pool with a creepy leer on its face. Just beautiful.

A perfect 12 minutes. Everything compliments each other so we'll in this (story, art style and music). It's crazy that this is better than most films that deal with this subject matter.

Sad and nostalgic, reminded me of an old watercolor picture book set to beautiful music.

A little too sentimental, but this animated short benefits from an appealing drawing style and a gentle piano score.

Cool animation but I can't believe the guy who made this is only 30, seems like something a much older person would be going through.

As I was watching the film, I kept predicting how the film was going to progress, and, it went exactly as I figured it would. I like films to not be predictable, but even so, it was still charming.

A wonderfully animated short that finds a fitting metaphor for isolation and loneliness. It gets a little too sentimental maybe, but it's still sweet.

The animation here is beautifully done, a little fuzzy around the edges. This creates an atmosphere of memories long past--the device of diving deeper into the water for memories further back is well-used. I also appreciated the final moments, cloaked in both melancholy and happiness for the life that has been.

Touching albeit a bit melodramatic. I can only imagine it with Yann Tiersen's piano.
