As the titular, exceedingly popular performing duo (respectively a samisen player and a Shinnai singer) they enact a tragicomic tale of unrequited love that--save for a deeply affecting, pathos-ridden final scene--is far removed from director Mikio Naruse's usual cinema obsessions. (slantmagazine)

I found this to be a light-hearted and fun little romantic dramedy. It has a fast pace and story performances and often funny scenes. It has a bit of a downer ending but that didn't ruin the pleasure I got watching it.

"Primarily a vehicle for its very attractive stars Isuzu Yamada and Kazuo Hasegawa." - Keith Uhlich

An interesting look into the world of the Japanese equivalent to American vaudeville or British music halls. The theme of this Mikio Naruse film is ego. As the duo of Kazuo Hasegawa & Isuzu Yamada have their little quarrels about each others performance, and of gender issues. There was no doubt that Yamada's performance was what made this good in my eyes. The movie itself doesn't reach any emotional climax, but is about the average of Naruse's 30s output.
