I appreciated this, being someone who still remembers what it's like to be raised by a mom with five other kids. That being said, I thought this captured parenthood pretty well. Theron is excellent as usual and the gorgeous Mackenzie Davis's presence feels very real at times as well. Although all of the acting here is good. Reitmans best work since Up in the Air. Nothing short of a short, honest look at parenthood and what a mother has to deal with while raising kids. Worth a watch.

Presumably Diablo Cody had a baby, which shattered her idea that the purpose of everything in the world - including children - is to either bolster or detract from a person's happiness. So she delivers the groundbreaking news that being a good parent is an exhausting , unfun chore & that having money makes it easier. Never does the film dare suggest that perhaps certain people shouldn't have (so many) kids . The film's twist makes it decent, but the messages are one-sided liberal propaganda.

I was unprepared for Charlize Theron in the body of an exhausted sleep deprived 40 something mother of 3. The apparent postpartum depression was handled almost too subtly. It has a hopeful message and many sweet moments accented by upbeat music. A solid drama with some tension, but not a comedy. The twisty ending was somewhat thought provoking. Engaging and smart, but it was lacking in action and excitement.

Really enjoyed this movie. I don think i´ve seen a bad movie with Charlize Theron. Her, along with Mackenzie Davis and Mark Duplass, were really good. Even though it really didn´t need the twist ending, I loved it and would definitely give it a 2nd watch.

This is a case where what I want the film to be is not what the film actually is. Judging by the reviews on Criticker, others had the same issue. The first half hour of this plays like a horror film, says the childless weirdo.

Charlize Theron does a wonderful job selling the tart humor and subdued drama of TULLY, an ingratiating character study. Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody elegantly draw Theron's character in subtle strokes, and pull off a tricky balancing act as they slowly reveal more and more details about the nature of her interior life. It's definitely a stretch sometimes, but it's still a clever portrayal of what it's like to choose between a dream and a purpose.

Lovingly shot (lots of delicate attention to depth-of-focus), effortlessly acted (Davis has a constant twinkle in her eye; Theron shows remarkable range in a complex role), and smartly written and edited (the dialogue is perfectly raw and awkward; the pre-Tully mother/parenthood montage is on point). Gets a little weird in the third act though, and while the twist answers some questions and adds some intrigue, it also introduces a bevy of plot holes that overshadow any of its pros.

I hope we get more movies directed by Jason Reitman, written by Diablo Cody, and starring Charlize Theron. I know we've only had two films from this trio, but they've both been really solid, and Tully is even better than the first outing. It's a deep, unglamorous portrayal of parenting, aging, and marriage. Cody's writing keeps getting better, Reitman is almost always a solid director, and Theron adds another fantastic performance to a really long list of them. Tully is great.

This is worth watching for Charlize Theron's performance alone, but then again you don't expect any less from her. The film has the right tone, so the story and its twist play out nicely, even though not all of it is as clean as it hopes it is. I did expect this to have more humour to it but its themes are quite serious and at times nothing to joke about. To that extent, the film handles all of this very well.

I think maybe you have to be a woman to find something positive behind this torturous movie about a disintegrating identity--and that wasn't a fat suit. Tully was an uplifting spark that enlivened the movie in parallel to her effect on Marlo. Marlo's brother providing Tully was kind of a plot hole.

A return to form for Reitman, an excellent script from Cody, who kept it a little more subtle than her other stuff that I'm familiar with. But regardless of how good both of those people are at their jobs here, this movie is nothing without the performance of Theron, who plays a struggling mother to perfection. This was a tender, realistic, sweet, somewhat challenging portrayal of motherhood. I didn't really expect to like this as much as I did.

Too early to say, but I would be surprised if Charlize Theron doesn't get an Oscar nomination for her performance. The movie was very dynamic and pleasant to watch, but I would love to alter a couple of things about the way the theme (and especially the last act) was executed.

Theron is a tour-de-force with her portrayal of a struggling mother, dedicating herself to the role through weight-gain and a performance that makes the character seem real. The plot is a good exploration of postpartum depression coupled with an existential crisis that is dealt with in a novel way. It is a stretch to call this film a comedy, and I feel that my missed expectations hampered my enjoyment somewhat. The film does also meander and I was starting to feel its runtime.

Feels very earnest in its portrayal of parenthood. The ending was surprising, and gave the film a whole new meaning, but I don't think it undermined what came before it. Really well written. Diablo Cody's scripts just get better each time.

Until the end it's a funny well-written realistic dramedy with well-rounded characters about motherhood. Till the twist it was at 75-78 rating. But then then the movie ends with one of the most unnecessary twist ever. Ruining almost all that gone before it. Theron proof she is absolutely one of the best actrices working today.

A very satisfying return to form for Reitman. This is a wonderfully honest and authentic film about motherhood, perfectly capturing the exhaustion, tedium, thanklessness and condescending remarks from others. Cody's script is insightful and witty, and Theron gives yet another outstanding performance. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about a certain revelation later in the film, which seems to cheapen things a bit, but this is a very successful character piece.

I heard phantom crying which evidently is something that happens. It was so real that I would get up from bed, check on our baby and see that it wasn't him, and then start searching the house for the baby that was crying. I started hearing it at work. No joke. Parenthood is stressful and marriages take effort. Shoot me a dm and we can talk about it. Or you could watch a movie like this. Either way works.

An unflinching look at the tolls of parenthood and the way that plans and dreams evolve or disappear over the years. Clever dialogue and strong lead performances, but overall not as strong as Reitman's earlier work.

When the big twist became apparent, I stopped caring about the characters and how far they had come. It was lazy writing and sloppy characterization and downplayed the realism. Charlize Theron had moments of brilliance but ultimately the film had zero stand out moments and no real vision. It was just a reminder that parenting is hard but the film seemed aimed at an audience that would already know this. That makes me wonder why the script went for a weird twist instead of absolute realism.

Until an unnecessary, witless final twist which only serves to undermine the dramatic impact (and resonance) of the film, this is a finely tuned, acrid portrait of motherhood, anchored by a brilliant, no-holds-barred performance from Theron, effectively capturing the journey from exhaustion to gradual reinvigoration in her relationship with Davis (excellent in a very Joan Cusack-ish performance). Some very funny lines mix well with harsh truths, all the way up to the mess of a finale.

I don't understand why this movie felt it needed a Big Twist?? I get what Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman were going for, but the way it's implemented, it just feels like it cheapens the relationships built in the film. It needed to go further one way or the other. Diablo Cody has been proving herself to be a smart writer who knows how to do great and honest character work. I just think going a little farther with magical realism could have gone a long way.

Though far from novel, the main idea is pretty good, and it does fit the material quite well. But the script, which doesn't come together the way it should, is somewhat scattershot, and most of Cody's lines fell completely flat.

It's a successful attempt to show the great efforts of a mother; Marlo is a character with a skeptical sense of humor (which I personally enjoy); in general, a decent work with a significant meaning. The narrative trick is a way to show the effect that time operates and how it grows inside the main character; it's certainly significant, but it's revealed in a way that is not satisfying at all.

Great movie that feels very real - besides the ending of course (so not needed). Acting by Theron is superb and probably one of her best roles. Also Davis played well. I didn't review it after I watched it so now I forgot all the great things I had to write about it. Too bad.
