This film is the second silver screen adaption of the Finnish war book by Väinö Linna with the same name as the film. The story is based on Linna's experiences as an infantry man in the Finnish army during the so called "Continuation War" (1941-1944). The film tells the story of the fate of a machine gun platoon made up of young conscripts from various parts of Finland fighting against the Russian army from the beginning (summer 1941) to the end (summer/autumn 1944) of the war. It's very long and requires some subtitle reading but it's not bad as films about war go and details a part of world history that few of us have heard of. Gritty and dirty.

More rough version of the classic Finnish war movie.

Might be the best war-movie ever made. Stripped of all glory and sentimentality, left with only the bare bones of warfare; young men dying in terror at the front.

It's 1985 and Rauni Mollberg doesn't really concern himself with patting Finland's WWII veterans on the back the way Edvin Laine did in 1955's sunny adaptation. Some of the same scenes reappear, but this version is much darker and more realistic. Battle looks more convincing, guys get shell-shocked, go berserk, commit crimes, get executed for refusing orders, etc. He still shows the occasional singing and unwinding, but nothing seems glorious in any way. There's even a drunken "Heil Hitler!".
