Sort of a cross between "Love Story" and an earthy Rembrandt painting, this movie stars Rutger Hauer as a gifted Dutch sculptor who has a stormy, erotic, and star-crossed romance with a beautiful young girl... (imdb)

A worthless, infuriating defeat that perfectly encapsulates why the dutch are insultingly terrible at making movies.

I have no problem with Verhoeven going on exploitative rampage, but this was closer to nonsense. First half is early Godard -we don't give a fuck about community- without the chatter. Like all Verhoeven it's energetic and relentless. But in the end I didn't manage to take this movie in any context except that human beings are composed of bodily fluids.

A satirical and tastefully tasteless comment on false and socially constructed ideas of sexuality, commitment and conformity.

Another one of those films with a different title here in oz. An early verhoeven that hints at his career to come. Toe knee :-)

Sleazily erotic early Verhoeven flick.

Viewed March 9, 2022. Underneath the scatalogical humor, the bodily fluids, the cartoonish eroticism and sexual violence, Verhoeven slowly builds a tender romance between his two unconventionally likable lead characters. Although the opening montage of Rutger Hauer bedding various women doesn’t suggest it, the movie develops into a romantic tragedy, like a coarse Love Story.

maggots and petals strewn across a naked body; the intersection of sex, art and death. verhoeven understood plenty even then, and it's no surprise there wasn't an ounce of shame or compromise in him from the start. what i wasn't expecting is something so romantically and aesthetically-minded, so sweet-natured. it's provocatively celebratory about much of what western society guiltily represses, and who better to embody such a celebration than the blithely primal specimen that was hauer?

Earliest Verhoeven with a distinct voice on the radar. A solid first effort.

A romantic comedy with a lot of bad acting, about a love couple who act like the're 18, With a director who's constantly trying to shock the viewer with puke, shit and sex.. Where they in an identity crisis? Though some nice shots of amsterdam:)

Probably Hauers best performance ever. Great Dutch movie made after a great book!

Top bassass moment? In a comedic scene that really doesn't fit the tone of the rest of the film, it's Olga attempting to go more or less topless in front of Queen Juliana (head of the Dutch Royal Family). Trying to flash your Head of State probably is pretty badass. 0 cats and 0 decapitations.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

Personally I thought there was too much sex in this movie. Overall this movie wasn't too bad. Very crazy, and in the end quite sad. Eric was quite obsessive. Haha: tiet en kont tiet en kont tiet en kont kont kont

I think I finally figured out what Verheoven deal was with his Dutch movies - he was inventing the GrossOut-Comedy with the comedy part being sort of optional.

Grotesque, vulgar and obscene. At times it seemed like it would develop into something more coherent, but it never really happened.

A pretentious, uber-Euro, hippie-era romcom that makes the mistake of romanticizing fantasy. The emotional appeal attempt is laughable. In all fairness, the film is fairly well constructed by Verhoeven, but the script simply doesn't translate well from the original text at all, much like Süskind's Perfume. These ideas are easier to explore in our imaginations. To bring them to film requires much more creativity and effort, without resulting in this kind of crass, melodramatic, sociopathic mess.
