Feels a bit light on info, as nearly all silent docs do, but it is interesting and, most notably, beautifully shot.

Water! Water! Water! 'Chinatown' but instead of Los Angles it's Turkestan and instead of the Owens Valley it's Siberia, and everyone is in on the deal. But what trumps water? A railroad, of course. There is something very Promethean about trains, in particular steam trains of the early 20th Century. Forward! Man can achieve anything in collaboration with machine (and initially, it must be said, beast) if he sets his mind to it (by choice or duty), which of course is a gift and a curse.

Full of youthful cinematic energy with a feeling of jubilance in the medium itself. The subjects are often tired, world-weary, or monotonous. Even if there existed real optimism about the future improvements brought to Central Asia by the Soviets, it seems to belie the propagandist cause. Contemporary musical score on the BFI release is patchy, namely I don't like the guitar sections, although the marimba (or whatever) kind of stuff seems to fit better.
