Another win from Pixar in my opinion (and a fail from Disney for not releasing it in the theatre). I really appreciate Pixar getting more progressive with their children centered stories lately. This was beautifully animated and highly entertaining. It’s hilarious, it isn’t overbearing, and it ends up being very heartfelt and important. Impressive voice work and anime-style directing as well. Don’t listen to the “controversy”. Watch it, and watch it with your kids.

Vintage Pixar in its gorgeous visuals and skill at depicting evocative and important themes, while also focusing on Asian culture and female dynamics in a way that’s extremely contemporary and yes, important. It doesn’t break from their formula overall, but it’s a superb example of it. Really, really deserved a theatrical release.

Totally unlike anything else Pixar has done in terms of its sense of style, personality, surprisingly edgy content (this will arch more parents' eyebrows than any of the studio's films since The Incredibles). What really cements this as one of Pixar's best of the last decade is its surprisingly nuanced message that doesn't crystalize until nearly the end. Between that, its feisty screenplay, and visual invention, this is the rare post-Toy Story 3 Pixar film that feels truly boundary-pushing.

One of things that makes Ghibli such outstanding animated art, is its effortless grace and balanced warmth. However, Pixar -with Turning Red at least- sometimes tries way too hard; and ends up a weird mix of jagged, mechanical, and saccharine. That's not to say it isn't a decent Pixar flick about Growin'Up™ and Asian Identity In Murica™ (Canada, whatever), but while it bounces around trying its hardest, the end result is merely decent paint-by-numbers Content™; not art.

The self-referential tone isn’t really my thing, but that’s kind of the whole point. Thematically evocative - possibly the most mature in content of any Pixar/Disney movie to date - dealing with female lust and pubescent angst, themes of accepting one’s body (and mind) are long overdue, and welcome. I’ve long had this thought that The Moment one Grows Up is when You see Your parents for what they are: the same, scared child you are. This is the rare film that shows it so delicately and true.

Excellent coming of age story that doesn't shy away from some real middle school feelings & experiences like bullying & puberty. Some of the humor is mildly forced & the film could have been even richer if it felt more natural. Might not be super interesting for kids under 7/8, but there's layers here to dissect; lots of conversation starters for pre-teens, and a good overall message about dealing with generational expectations. Sort of a spiritual companion to Encanto in a thematic sense.

Haven't seen Luca yet, but this is quite a bit better than other recent Pixar like Onward and Soul. Really funny, and visually really interesting. It has the frenetic and referential vibe of other great animated films of the last few years like Spiderverse and Mitchell vs. the Machines, but with an eye for interesting static images. The ending is also excellent, I was cackling uncontrollably for that last set piece.

Like the best Pixar films, Turning Red uses a light touch to stir deep emotions as it explores what it means to grow up and let go, but it’s also a bouncy delight thanks to knowing gags about the messiness of adolescence and thanks to Mei herself, who’s made instantly winning by her expressive eyes, big, Aardman-like grin, and Chiang’s vocal work. Shi’s 34, which makes her part of a generation that grew up on the classics of Pixar’s golden age. Her feature debut can proudly stand beside them.

Hail to our Chinese overlords! Following the trend after Mulan remake, Raya, and Shang-Chi, Disney aims to please the next world superpower China with Turning Red, the title of which actually refers to how Canada is gradually becoming communist (For this, we must also thank Justin Trudipshit, who is allegedly Fidel Castro's biological son! Yeah, it's a real conspiracy, look it up, I'm not even kidding). So, do we buy more $DIS here, or do we wait for WWIII and buy the dip? Just DCA, bruv.

So the director says this story is a love letter to Toronto. A love letter to Asian culture and a love letter to her teenage years, growing up in the early 2000s. Bitch please....you just ripped off Teen Wolf (1985) Time to pander to that giant Chinese market overseas, eh Disney? That cringey "My panda, my choice" line made me vomit in my mouth. Can you keep your fucking feminist agenda out of cinema? Thanks. Nobody was saying that shit in 2002. Also, fuck Toronto....now and forever!

Pixar keeps getting better and this is probably the most contemporary feeling film they've done. The main plot is typical but I could watch a miniseries expanding on the girl gang or the aunties. Or even the dad's photorealistic food porn. I did not expect so much cringe with the mom/daughter relationship or talking about periods in a "kids'" movie, not that it's bad. Kaiju mom panda. Fav scene: mom discovering the fantasy drawings and storming to the convenience store. I died.

Fun fact: I was on my period when I watched this. I think It truly heightened my viewing. I've seen this 3 times now, and I appreciate the animation more and more with each re-watch. People who have irrational problems with this movie are probably people I'm fine with not knowing. This movie was funny, refreshing, and heartfelt all wrapped into a cute little red panda box. I highly recommend this to anyone who menstruates or is a fan of animation. I give 9 blooming red peonies out of 10.

The second-best Pixar film about periods right after Cars 2. This is set in Toronto 2002, yet it looks like it uses our more updated plastic money. Hmm. It also needed a scene where one of the kids says, "hey, I heard Broken Social Scene is playing at Lee's Palace tonight."

I may need to start reigning in my expectations when it comes to Pixar. It's definitely not fair that I consider a movie lower tier Pixar just because it doesn't make me cry. This is firmly good, but it didn't have the cleverness that I hope for with Pixar and it didn't hit me in the feels any more than an average Disney movie. Still, I do love that we're getting so many animated movies that have richer cultural backgrounds.

Tbh I found the main chick moderately on the annoying side but it gradually won me over; got a little more into the epic adventure magic side than I expected, had one of the better Pixar movie climaxes in recent memory. Boy band music at the end was underwhelming - no kid's movie fake hit music has ever or WILL EVER top Eye 2 Eye from A Goofy Movie! Whew hope that was praise enough *Film Twitter finds out I mildly critiqued small aspects* NOOOOOOOO *is sucked into black hole*

We didn't know we needed so much a Lady Bird-esque Canadian-Chinese animated dramedy. Basically a late 90s teen flick that hits every spot expected these days while telling a pretty straightforward, yet well-imagined urban fantasy kaiju Carrie-ish about a girl trying to be herself in a world of constant pressure. Gotta love this new relaxed Pixar era of little personal monster films, although Disney clearly doesn't care much about them.

Its opening twenty minutes promise more than the remainder of the film is ultimately able to deliver. There's a lack of clarity in the film's themes which left me wishing the panda had been a more sharply focused metaphor. My wife noted that the early aughts setting was notably filtered through a 2022 lens, which might also help explain why this didn't land with me. Still a cute film with a good number of laughs.... I'm just not sure it has a precise idea of what it's trying to say.

Pixar does the Pixar thing, if in a new way. As a spiritual sequel to Inside Out this works really well, and if anything just suffers a bit from starting to edge into areas that hundreds of coming-of-age stories have already covered... albeit usually with slightly fewer magical pandas. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll spend a few minutes thinking about self-expression and assimilation.

Friends/foes, parents/parties, studying/sneaking out, crushes/crushing embarrassment-it's all part of the crimson-faced chaos of puberty, and it's captured perfectly here (see the exaggerated emotion close-ups) within a refreshing cultural context and time period. Lots of cute and hilarious bits to go with the huge dramatic sweeps (red moons and rituals and multiple existential planes), weighty themes of identity and family heritage, and even a stunning gazing-out-the-car-window sigh of a scene.

It’s a bit messy narratively, but it’s just so darn energetic and infectious that I hardly mind. So what if its metaphor gets muddy and its climax is conflicting? Its pace, jokes, references, and performances are all bang on point to feelingly portray a few weeks of its protagonist’s life - and what a vivacious and delightful heart that is for the film, well strong enough for me to still feel its beat days afterwards.

Deleting Twitter continues to be a boon, as I had no idea about whatever micro-controversy surrounded this movie until after I'd watched it. This is more mile-a-minute than I usually expect from Pixar and the animation fits that. They do their usual lighter touch on deeper emotional aspects of culture and family that work super well here, asking questions that linger and hit harder than the central mother/daughter conflict. It's a lot of fun too! Not 100% sure where it sits on their list overall

I haven't watched a Pixar movie in a while, but they really know their business. It is entertaining and engaging for a 8 year old and interesting for an adult who likes animations. The panda is cute, not Ghibli cute, but cute nevertheless. I liked the soundtrack without understanding why as it is very poppy but then it turned out to be Goransson, so I'm coherent with my tastes. My favourite character was Mei's father.

Really going to put people on blast for somehow not being able to relate to a movie with themes of controlling parents, puberty emotions, and body image just because it’s in the coat of 13 year old tween Asian angst, shouldn’t the fact that it’s more specific actually be more relatable if you have empathy? Broke down at the theme of "never being good enough for parents", them having their ideas of my future vs. my own. Great music, best animation from Pixar in a while, super expressive.

I actually think this movie is visually more appealing than other Pixar flicks because it plays more with facial expressions and mannerisms but the actual conceit is a big bore to me. As a period piece, it fails hard not only just on various visual aspects but also what society's attitude was at the time. Why the hell does everyone in high school have a cellphone? its application of the themes of not being good enough for the parent are so rote, bland, and played out I struggled to care.

Broken down to the atomic level, sure this follows similar patterns we’ve already seen. But between the layers, this is boundary-pushing for Pixar; frantic depictions of a frantic pre-teen age and, like Encanto, a complex dissection of generational expectations and antagonisms. All of this notched up to eleven, the film is loaded with hysterical drawings while honestly rendering metro-Canadian life. Not a false note and charming as hell—this will rank among Pixar’s very best.

The soundtrack is catchy and thankfully the Disney silliness and cloying slapstick humor is minimal. The young heroine is relatable and the supporting characters are engaging. Obstacles beleaguer Mei as she attempts to traverse pubescence, but unfortunately when her mother becomes the chief antagonist she is so overbearing and domineering that she comes across as selfish. The griping about their conflict clearly comes from people who never saw the movie.

Another excellent coming-of-age film from Pixar with stellar animation, compelling characters, and relatable, inclusive themes. I often retort to my daughter that the music she listens to is “humbug”, the 80’s music from my own childhood is obviously far superior. As did my dad before me. It’s the circle of life. Like with Encanto, I think one of the core messages of these movies is that each new generation is much more than an echo of their past - even though there is great value in having family culture and roots. But there has to be a balance between family identity and individual identity.

Intensely personal yet charmingly accessible to all. The exaggerated emotions are hilarious, and the anime flourishes visually set it apart from the Pixar house style. Animation tends to feature voices who claim ownership on childhood awkwardness, transcended only by escaping into art. TURNING RED does this to a certain extent, but also shows the universality of these feelings - and how there are ultimately many ways to fit into this world.

Utterly charming, captivating Pixar effort is that rare bird that tells a specific, insightful coming of age story, that unfolds into a more subtle and complex examination of family, community and even the dread “black dog” of depression and anxiety, all wrapped up in the endearingly goofy conceit of a red panda! Full of original and clever ideas, and honestly, painfully funny at times, it disappoints slightly in the mayhem-stacked finale, but can’t take the shine off itself. 4*townie forever!!

I know a lot of people loved this- and I wonder if they just love it despite its flaws, for the message. The animation style is that oversimplified one that's happened of late, and it's oversaturated things. The other three girls are two-dimensional and bothersome in how they're constructed. Mei and the mother's relationship is interesting, but the mother did turn me off for her unwillingness to see that her daughter could choose to do things she'd not approve of. I did not relate to it enough.

Turning Red feet like Illumination set the standards & Pixar followed. The film lays decent groundwork portraying puberty, female friendships & the pressures of growing up; but it's desire to embrace a fantastical action finale, makes the message of accepting your "inner beast" seem secondary. There's also a tacit approval of blackmail, bribery & prostitution to achieve one's goals. The dad (& his perception) turns out to be the real hero, while the mom is an overbearing monster throughout.

As an adult, I think I would've enjoyed it more if I'd known what to expect, and if the animation style didn't completely lose every aspect of what makes red pandas so adorable. Once again I have to applaud Pixar for bravely trying something like this; a complex family film which handles subjects like puberty and the expectations placed on us by our parents/culture/gender. As a metaphor the red panda was clever and could be interpreted in many ways. But as a film, it just didn’t grab me unlike for example Encanto or Luca.
