Twin Sisters

Somewhat contrived melodrama that tends to hold the viewer's hand through a lesson in history and morality. Contains some effective moments.

Very dramatic movie. One sister married with a Jew and the other with an SS-officer. Don't forget your handkerchief !

This could have been a great film, if it committed to a thematic purpose. If the core is about the relationship of the sisters then the intervening drama should be cut in half and the ending scenes should be much fuller and richer in dialogue and emotion. If it's about the war then the framing device should be thrown out the window. In any case, the whole feels way too episodic, with little moments that add up conceptually but the whole ends up less than the parts.

With the anticipatory drive of a continual cliffhanger, this beautifully edited war film without combat is about the destructiveness of ideology, how war affects people's sense of humanity and critical thinking, eyes so jaundiced that the bonds of sisterhood are lost in apartheid.
