A peculiar film that is at times confounding, yet furthers JPR's fascination with abject desire and death. The religious symbolism in the film is intriguing, with Odete's psychosomatic pregnancy almost mimicking the immaculate conception, and her later embodiment of the deceased Pedro paralleling the death and Resurrection of Christ. Many of the shots are astounding in Odete, especially the amazing end shot of Odete/Pedro desperately dry-fucking Rui in a truly depressing/darkly-comedic scene.

A couple of broken people act out in ridiculous ways. Saw it a few years ago, but couldn't for the life of me remember the title until it suddenly popped unbidden into my head today. Why is this stupid repellent little flick still inhabiting my brain? I've completely forgotten far better films.

I was about to compare this to a drab, unfunny Almodovar, but then i remembered what mid-period Fassbinder is like and it sort of started to make more sense (although not really, this film still has some of the most inexplicable character behavior i have ever seen, which starts to become a problem when you watch these illogical ciphers go about their mundane lives for long stretches at a time). I guess it's more distinctive, while comparable, to an Ozon film at least.
