I just wish Jean-Pierre Léaud wasn't so terribly irritating, playing the exact same character he plays in every film.

One of Truffaut's best films about a young Frenchman who falls in love with two English sisters. A companion piece to Jules and Jim. Truffaut patterned the sisters in part after the Bronte sisters. Beautifully shot by Nestor Almendros.

Bounced off this pretty hard, though to be fair Truffaut isn't one of my favorites.

Comparisons have been made to Jules and Jim, but it lacks the character depth that made that film so great, focusing mainly on love. It's still a very enjoyable film, with a well told story and pretty images and there are stretches where it captures some magic, it just doesn't quite hold on to it.

Devastating.

On social values and gender stations, and how these accommodate (or don't) the ebb and flow of young love and taboo carnal desires. Companion piece for, inverse of, and conspicuously referential to Jules and Jim, though whereas that film is bohemian and indulgent, this is rather bourgeois, but cozy and affectionate, thanks in no small part to the way Almendros captures stunning rural locales and a trio of heartbreaking performances.

There are nice touches and clever moments, but they're relatively few. The film is watchable and has its charms, but at the end of it you have no sense of why these characters were drawn to each other. None of them has the strength of personality of Jules, Jim or Catherine. It starts out promising, but gradually goes off the rails with a lot of abstract nonsense about romance, while perhaps making some vague point about sexual freedom. Despite some lovely cinematography, it's Truffaut's weakest.

Solid love triangle/loves gained/loves lost period piece. Far more often than not I find Jean-Pierre Leaud's characters annoying, but I felt that less in this one. It's enjoyable enough, but I don't think it's one that will really stick with me.

I don't know why Truffaut is such an affected French dandy here - steadily teasing in his composed demeanor, playing with a turn of the century sentimentality about swooning love like some postmodern dweeb.
