I didn't hear any of you schmucks complain about movies changing history when Tarantino did it.

History is rewritten to cater to the American idea that they single handed won World War II. If you don't care about actual history then by all means see and enjoy. If you do then stay as far away from this as possible.

As it turns out, I care very little about submarines or the wacky adventures that arise within them.

Pretty bland and generic submarine film. It's suspenseful, but for all the reasons submarine films are.

Not good, but mildly diverting thriller. It has it's moments, but it also seems too tame.

The movie itself is enjoyable to watch, but it is damaged by its typically blatant steam-rollered version of history. Absolutely nothing at all covered in the film actually happened, it seems to have been designed just for the American public to gloat over. It provides some good action none the less and represents life upon a submarine well however. I never even noticed Jon Bon Jovi was in this until I came here to rate it.

Old-time WWII adventure in the new-fangled pumped-up and frenzied style. The pugilistic camera keeps charging at the actors' chests, hammering them in the jaw, locking them in a clinch -- and the actors all look as if they are straining to lift a five-hundred-pound barbell, their eyes popping, veins bulging, sweat streaming.

Slightly entertaining but nothing special. It is forgettable and has no character development at all, but the acting is solid and there are some nice action scenes.

Smart and dramatic action! Submarines could not shoot torpedos at each other underwater during the war and uncovering enigma was not an American endeavour - but we will forgive these follies! Now how historical would you find a German destroyer trying to sink a US -led submarine with a multi-racial crew? Best is to enjoy it and have a Tarantinoesque approach to historical accuracy.

This movie would have been awesome if it was made in the 70s, but instead it's been whitewashed in an attempt to make a summer blockbuster. Everything in this falls short, creating a dull and predictable action film. Also, cracking the Enigma didn't work like this.

Boy, that veteran Italian producer Dino de Laurentis really wants to show how awesome us Unionites were in saving the day. Although the casting scewed heavily honky, I really appreciated how they emphasized the Youth of the characters: they may not be able to beat Elizabeth Taylor in a drinking game, but they can steal a Nazi sub and save WWII for the Allies. That's my kind of forgotten man.

Zero on general principal. The British captured the German Enigma machine on U-110. The Americans had absolutely nothing to do with it. How would U.S. veterans feel if they made a pseudo historical film about the British taking Iwo Jima? Talk about nationalistic arrogance... Movies like these are why so many Europeans hate America...

This doesn't just hold the "honor" of being a terrible movie, no, it also holds the "honor" of getting its historical facts so unbelievably wrong that the studio itself had to apologize.

I generally like submarine movies, because being unable to see your opponent turns it into a battle of wits and intelligence, and generally forces better writing. This could have been better, if didn't insist on so frequently having American soldiers die heroic deaths with a triumphant score blaring in the background. I don't care that it was historically inaccurate, British patriotism and American patriotism are both as equally insufferable to me, with as equally problematic histories attached.

Submarine movies are very enjoyable if they are not comedy's. Fun is very far away on this thriller directed by Mostow. Movie is very intense and keeps the audience on the seats even if they have to go to toilets. Some historic mistakes and characters superficiality took the rating down a bit.

Seeing this in tandem with K19 THE WIDOWMAKER, this fumbles where the other modestly soars: the historical accuracy of its story aside, the crew here do not behave like 40s era grunts and a capable cast are handed a screenplay which makes little effort to differentiate its characters or even give its actors a great deal to do (you know you're in trouble when Keitel keeps disappearing into the woodwork!) A sadly dull and dreary experience.

Blatant disregard for history, blatant regard for making an engrossing action film. Perhaps most jarring historical point is German sailors gunning down survivors. Slick action scenes, memorable points on leadership. The number of close depth charges sustained and lights re-blowing up, unrealistic! But still found myself seriously rooting for the team! McConaughey very easy on the eye, even to a hetero man here. Vulnerable and believable performance. I'm into naval films so take into account
