a tonally wonky old man movie wide-ranging in its disdain, here to teach kids/xtians/patriots/libs how things really are with rugged cinematography, gruesome violence and mccarthyan dialogue full of pithy home truths about the laws of the land. you don't beat the river/desert/jungle nor humanise it neither, ya just survive it or don't. as ulzana's inglorious and weary final moments confirm, everybody's resigned to their parts in this neverending play written in the language of imperialism.

An interesting film with a simplistic complexity. Superficially it does little but paint the Apache as savages that deserve to be wiped out, and the story provides little else to be interested in besides their defeat and the young officer's growing hatred. But the tone isn't triumphant or defiant, and there's really little reason to cheer anything on. There's an undercurrent of desperation, misunderstanding, ignorance and futility. It's not examined with depth, but provides a sobering backdrop.

Robert Aldrich Western starring Burt Lancaster as a guide who counsels a greenhorn Calvary Lieutenant in a chess-match with an Apache warlord named Ulzana. Both sides are depicted as savage and uncomprehending of the other, and a parallel to the Vietnam War wouldn't be off-base. Lancaster is quite good.

As a Lancaster fan and someone who has generally enjoyed Aldrich's films, Ulzana's Raid was disappointing. Aldrich's Vera Cruz from decades earlier is the better western. The story here is pretty straightforward as Lancaster and a young Davison chase after a group of Apaches that have skipped the reservation to stop them from doing what they do, raping and murdering the white folks, or so the film implies. With insight like that, I wish I would've skipped it.

Accused of racism a fair amount, but is really just nihilistic and cynical as hell. Very well done, though, and Lancaster tears it up in a role I'd never have expected him to pull off.

Highly watchable and (nowadays) very politically incorrect Western

Viewed January 31, 2014. A weird western that's either really racist or horribly misguided. Has a lot of scenes of brutality that are hard to take. Burt makes a good leading man and the cinematography is top-notch, but I'm not sure I absorbed everything that this one has to offer.

A fascinating if flawed film. Extremely racist in its sentiments towards the antagonists (who go out and prove that racism - and ingrain it in the young colonel character). But conversely, it's also an extremely adept and technically proficient work, with a great sense of danger and realism. It's too bad the music is horribly abrasive.

Hate and racism are the focus of "Ulzana's Raid," as experienced by a young officer with his first command. The film presented the raiders as savages with no context, except some story about taking someone's power.

A movie that clearly can be read as an allegory on the Vietnam War with a very interesting moral ambiguity. While the Apaches are the "villains" in the movies, the movies does its best to depict them as nuanced as possible by making them neither the simple brute savage of classic Western nor the noble savages of liberal Westerns, but shows them commit horrible violent acts as well as being smart compassionate humans. Lancaster is in top form.

The Apache antagonists are exceptionally brutal in this movie, which is true to 19th century life, but it actually takes great pains to combat racist implications (old McIntosh urges the young Lt. not to hate, McIntosh's own wife is native, the warband has a loyal native companion etc) and manages to paint a picture worthy of the Revisionist Western label. Lancaster's shitty acting hurts every movie he's in, but it's otherwise a good, grim western.
