I personally think the Bicycle Thief is slightly over-rated myself, but changing the main character into a slightly retarded man who beats his kids and his wife was probably not the treatment it needed.

Interesting, low-key drama mixes elements of BICYCLE THIEVES and TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE; lacks the spit and polish that might elevate it to loftier company, but the rough edges give it an energy and vitality that almost compensate - worthwhile as an insight and window into living in poverty in Turkey, with some fine, naturalistic performances by its cast.

A bit naive and obstinately declarative, verbally iterating the drama at all times, but still kind of warm and charming. The photography grabbed me most. From a technical standpoint it's full of staging, lighting and editing errors, but cinematographer Kaya Ererez's framing and compositions are truly inspired. It really shows what the natural gift for visual aesthetic can do without need for extravagant locations, expensive art design or studio effects. The film comes off as a very rough gem.

The ending is perhaps a bit much, or maybe the build up is a bit lacking, but the film's thematic through-line is very strong and overall very well executed.

a significant flick in turkish and world cinema history. it's quite simply a masterpiece.

Remembered me an Iranian Movie "The Cow", but this movie is more intricate and complex. It wasn't an odd sense when you see these elements in your everyday life and the integration of culture between us made the movie absolutely sensible. The last part of the movie can be less. It was a little jarring.

And this, my friends, is why I am atheist.
