It's a shame, that when it finally builds an impressive momentum near the end, your sympathy with the elusive protagonist is gone. The reason for the first is, that apart from being terribly well-written, it's also a constructed in an unseen fashion, which at first is bit baffling, but ends up leaving you stunned - in a "blown away" kind of way. Kassowitz could have brought more to the role, I guess - and if he had, this might have been a cinematic revelation.

An interesting war movie which avoids falling into most of the well-known tropes of the genre. Told in various time periods with changing perspectives, it's underpinned by the concept of the unreliable narrator. Unreliable though he is, Kassovitz's timid hero is a likeable chap at first, and the moral cloud hanging over his actions takes its time building up. A thoughtful tale of ethics, featuring nuanced direction and a good supporting cast. One of France's best (of the 90s at least!)
