As melodramatic as De Santis' previous film, Bitter Rice, and the acting is often amusingly hammy, but it's still hard not to like this for the charming simplicity of the plot and the great photography.

Not as vibrant as Giuseppe De Santis's Tragic Hunt (1947) or Bitter Rice (1949), but there is something lurking from Under the Olive Tree (1950) that gives it life. Lucia Bosè for one. Not sure how much I liked the story, but there sure was characters, often a bit over-the-top. Made the drama humorous.

this artificiality of camera and the actors' obviously strange movements for the camera, kill the movie. It's as if the novice director wanted to imitate some genuine neorealism of his compatriots. Despite the presence of Lucia Bose, this is even worser than some of the Turkish social realist movies, which themselve are imitations of Italian ones!
