Kusturica is the cinematic equivalent of Vonnegut. Incredible characters. An ability to mine the richest humor from awful situations, but also to not forget the sadness and horror while doing it. An obvious deep love for humanity. A small touch of the surreal. He leaves you breathless... and hungry for more.

It is truly one of the most visionary, inspired works of art that defies genre and transcends nationality as an insane, clamorous and emotional masterpiece of Yugoslavian tragedy through its affluent symbolisms, delightfully macabre humour and visceral genius in merging reality with fantasy into a final unparalleled chorus of absolute, feral madness. Both painful and hysterical, it breeds horror and power, the sickness and beauty of the human condition. This movie is sick. It is fucking sick!

An amazing film that is at the same time a poetic metaphor of a war, a realistic description of a war and a black comedy about a war. Brilliant in every possible way.

My appreciation of Underground decreased ever so slightly after I saw Time of the Gypsies, which I felt did some of the same things better, but heavens, this is awesome beyond belief. The last half hour is fucking ill.

I'm obviously missing a lot here, because this was my top PSI yet I'm ranking it in my T2. There are some striking moments here, and occasional pathos. However, the dark comedy, which I think some find appealingly absurdist, was to me more slapstick -- it's way over the top and it never lets up. The insertion of stock (and faux-stock) footage was alienating and the running parable about 20th century Balkan history was hard to reconcile with my admittedly scant understanding of the subject.

From now on, this is what I'll think of when I use the term "black comedy". Few films are able to jump so ably, so quickly, from the tragic to the comic, from horror to innocence, and be so enjoyable to watch all the way through.

Man, I just can't find the right words to describe Emir Kusturica. He is certainly one of the most creative directors of the last two decades, and this movie is unique as all the others Kusturica's I've seen.

Kusturica straddles the line between funny and cruel, and despite stepping over it just a bit sometimes, he manages to stay on the funny side for most of the film. Fantastic commentary on the human condition and a lot of bizarre laughs in a truly unique film.

Maybe the best film ever made about war, arms, escalation, exploitation, and the majority of society churning and boiling underneath it all, giving rise to its drives and fulfilling its needs to perpetuate. The magical realism that permeates the story grants incredible, surreal glimpses of the potential celebration, appreciation, joy, and commonality that the "underground" always has, but rarely seizes.

above all this is a monumental work of joy and music and horror and colour and sadness and tragedy, and the tragedy is laid on thicker and thicker and thicker, at which point the tragedy and the joy combine into an ending and oh my god. i am ecstatic and distraught and just in complete disbelief at what i just saw.

Hyper-poignant, it is one of the films you should watch before you die. I don't think it is possible to completely comprehend its depth, without going through it all in real life; but this is as close as you can get to understand 50 years of history of a part of the world in about 3 hours. The balkan music has the special capacity to hack my brain and bring me to a different mindset; so I think that's why I feel like I have been hit by an emotional truck right now.

I love how the film maintained its light comedic tone, as the main characters seemed to sink deeper into despair. "Underground" is a beautiful, compelling and honest work of art. Kusturica not only plays with your heartstrings but is in full control of his own artistic style. A masterpiece and worthy Palme D'or winner. Recommended !!!

Sometimes the wackiness feels forced and the satire a little obvious, and a couple of sequences didn't work for me (the scenes of Blacky and his son murdering people working on a film felt grotesque, and the epilogue is almost too long, but steps back just in time to save itself), but the way it all leads to that gut-punch of a third act felt earned, so I'm not gonna bitch. The actors are terrifyingly physical, with themselves and each other. They make South Korean actors look like ballerinas.

This movie creates a wounderfully strange universe that you are instantly drawn into and makes you accept a few far-fetched leaps of faith. The music makes you wish YOU were constantly followed by a brassband playing eastern european music as a soundtrack of your life. I got into this movie when I read that the band Kaizers Orchestra's lead singer wrote a lot of their first songs inspired by the moods in this movie, something which is evident eg. in the song "Resistansen" that paints a pictur

Unbearably smug and heavy-handed satire of Serbian nationalism that ends with an unbearably smug, heavy-handed, and sentimental celebration of Serbian nationalism. I don't know what it's getting at, but there are no real pathos. Nothing to really connect with. But at least you can say you're politically aware and very clever in liking it. Incredibly won the Palme D'or that year over ED WOOD, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, KIDS, and DEAD MAN (which I don't like either, but respect).

The surreal comedy never lets up, even in the face of a never-ending litany of man-made horrors, until we reach the devastating final act. The complete opposite of the somber drama I was expecting. It's like Fellini made a movie about World War II, but by way of Monty Python, so absolutely insane, to say the least. The humor didn't always work for me, but I admired its brazenness nonetheless.

On the one hand it's a hugely ambitious epic satirising the plight of the Yugoslav nation, packed with craziness, powerful visual compositions and memorable scenes. On the other hand, if you don't have a strong interest in Eastern European history and politics, 2 hours 45 is an awfully long time to sit through a wacky slapstick farce, no matter how incisive or brilliant it may be. The director gets an A for effort, but he puts so much material on the screen it's best consumed in small doses.

Humor in first two acts often feels forced and doesn't work as well as ie. in Black Cat, White Cat. It's not dull only due to the colorfulness of the set designed by Kusturica. Last act is a different story, though. Impressive war drama, where everyone loses something. Impressive scenes that will stay with the viewer for a long time (ie. wheelchair on fire).

I guess i can understand why Slavoj Zizek hates this, but seeing as how i don't have anything politically invested in it i can just sit back and admire the audacity of this grandiose, silly, epically indulgent spectacle that Kusturica created. That said, it's still nowhere near as great as Arizona Dream (but then again few films are), but if nothing else I can't help but admire it just for flying in the face of every respectable Euro-arthouse convention with it's sheer unabashed maximalism.

I mean, it's a truly great movie that marries a deep cynicism with a stylishness that constantly drift into batshit territory. Buuuut, if you, like me have only seen one other Kusturica movie and it is "Black Cat, White Cat" you'll want to prepare yourself for something rather different and much more brutal. And with a lack of characters to actually root for. Oh and maybe check the Wikipedia page about the war in Jugoslavia so you'll get more of what's going on.

A madcap, expansive farce-epic of Yugoslavia, from 1941 to 1992, following a pair of black-market profiteers as they go from friends to enemies, to (in a way) friends again. A film filled with bawdiness, wit, and magical realism, which for the most part works wonderfully. The final act seems a bit rushed, and a few subplots seem truncated (to be fair, it was trimmed from a five-hour miniseries), but the acting, directing, and writing are alike excellent. And the theme music is damned infectious.

This is a messy but fascinating film. It can be a bit hard to follow sometimes as far as the timeline goes. The opening scene is incredible. Quite coincidental that 12 Monkeys, which also included escaped animals in surreal situations, was released the same year. The plot reminded me of the Japanese soldier who stayed in the jungle until 1974 because he didn't realize WW2 was over. It's tonally odd at times, but for the most part the mix of comedy and drama is well done. Unique and daring.
