What's the point of the werewolf guy? He is totally useless. And even though he is prophesied to bring change and such, he doesn't. Kate Beckinsale does all the dirty work, which would be fine if there wasn't so much hype about the werewolf.

The lore and myth behind Underworld is better than the actual product here. What is impressive is that it is incorporated so well into the film and despite falling victim to cliche regularly, Underworld is generally a success.

It's kind of like Blade if Blade weren't interesting. Nothing ever really clicks as mostly you feel like the entire movie is one fight scene revolving around one problem. That being said, its not without its fun as the choreography and fight scenes can be pretty entertaining. That's not a recommendation at all, just a reminder that not everything about this is awful.

More an excuse to make a hitwoman film into a horror action film picturing an ancient war between vampires and werewolves taking place in contemporary world than, let's say, a proper fantasy starring these creatures. Wiseman can't shoot a gunfight without a Matrix reference -- but then, the whole blue-to-black gothic design feels Matrix-ish, starting with our Trinity-like assassin. Every actual dialogue sucks by trying to be too brit, as well as the PS2 design.

Personally I found Underworld to be a surprisingly enjoyable fantasy-action flick, which can mainly be attributed to the plotline, Nighy (plus to a lesser extent Sheen) and good visual design. Although Beckinsale and Speedman are average at best, the cast isn't bad overall. I liked the design of the sets, vampires and werewolves, even if the hybrid looks very unconvincing and has definitely not been developed nearly enough. Not quite a fulfilment of its potential overall, but I still liked it.

Underworld is a pretty terrible concept and a blatant knockoff of the Blade series. I wouldn't say it "works" but it is entertaining enough for what it is. If you're just in the mood for some mediocre action/horror polished schlock then this fulfills that criteria.

[Director's Cut] - This one is overlong, action sequences are for the most part crap and there are some painful dialogue - and ofc S.Speedman is terrible as usual. On the more positive side visuals are stylish, Kate.B is hot, B.Nighy is awesome (as always!) and the overall story is quite good. *Preview*: #12#, re-3*, liked, popcorn, Kate.B/7, oldies(2), R3 }*{ #00s(m)#, popcorn, hype, story, Kate.B.

The movie does a poor job of setting up the universe, which led to much confusion. There was too many characters, and the movie was too dark, or maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention. I got the just of the first 90 minutes, but the last half hour was just a mess. Michael Sheen was alright I guess. Kate Beckinsale is hot enough in tight clothes, but unfortunately that's really the only decent thing about the movie.

The premise is OK, if unoriginal. It's the execution that kills this. Action scenes try to be stylish but are so poorly filmed that they end up a mess. The washed-out colour schemes and lack of humour or any real emotion leave it as lifeless as its undead protagonists. If Twilight is vampires for tween girls then this is vampires for adolescent boys who want lots of shooting and lady butts in shiny latex.

Surprisingly quite a bit less terrible than I thought it would be. Yes, the dialogue is cringey, the action muddled, the characterization non-existent and the aesthetic an obvious attempt to imitate The Matrix, but the lore, mythology, and world-building behind it was surprisingly deep, thought-out and engaging, and I was surprised to find myself wanting to dive deeper into the world. It's just a shame that story in the foreground of all that was so formulaic and uninspired.

Underworld is abysmal and the film doesn't even do its neo gothic horror aesthetic well, ripping off better films like the Matrix and Equilibrium. There's maybe a hint of a cool concept in the idea of vampires vs. werewolves, but the film rides a muddled backstory, painful over-acting, and some inexplicable jumps in plot logic to something that is neither meaningful nor entertaining. Not even a campy turn by Bill Nighy can save this mess of a film.

Movie was ok. Characters (especially Lucian) we're interesting, so was the setting. Acting and story was great, however the movie falls with it's action the most. The action was particularly dull and the romance between Selene and Michael was just non-existent. I felt like they put it in there just for the sake of any romance. Movie is overall passable for what it is.

Beckinsale (The Last Days of Disco, The Golden Bowl, etc.), in a remarkable display of range and versatility, makes herself right at home as a music-video Vampirella, dressed in dominatrix black leather, photographed in deep-freezer blue, mired in a moronic blood feud between high-tech vampires and werewolves. Alongside the snarling supporting cast, she looks like a goddess, just not too smart a one.

The 'Vampire: The Masquerade' roleplaying game deserves a great movie adaptation, but while 'Underworld' tries to leach on the great mythology, it boils down to Beckinsale with guns and contact lenses, shooting things in slow motion, like some kind of watered down vampire version of Trinity from 'The Matrix'.

Passable actioner has the generic slick sheen of the early 00s about it which makes it a fairly vacuous experience, though painless; a tale of vampires vs werewolves should probably by default be more exciting than this, but Wiseman seems to have little to say after establishing tone and mood. Not helped by a disengaged cast, though Nighy can't help making all of his scenes crackle a little bit.

This was quite an intresting take on the Vampire mythos, but a good one.
It's filled with all the basic epic scale vampire conflict you'd expect, and handles it all quite well in a world of intrigue and violence. Although, I think Vampires, werewolves, vigilanties, and betrayal in movies are awesome (if you don't this movie must suck).
