Why did I start with the fifth instalment in a series I have never seen? This film is pure nonsense, and not the fun type of nonsense. There's something going on with vampires and lychans, and ugh, I hate just writing this down. I will admit. This film was too smart for me and it flew completely over my head.

There are a couple of good shots - one of the mansion, in particular, stands out - and the acting never degenerates to direct-to-video level, but without a reason to care and missing good/stylish action, Underworld: Blood Wars becomes more of a bore than a good time. The series up to this point has gotten by on style and fun, but it's failed at both of those goals. It's no longer a good time; it's a just a slog. Underworld: Blood Wars is the first Underworld film I didn't have any fun watching.

You know a franchise is in trouble, when they need to "replay" the entire series at the start of your latest outing. This one isn't terrible, but it's completely by the numbers and brings nothing to the franchise. The film movies at a breakneck pace and you just don't care enough to follow properly. Kate Beckinsale (though still stunning) evening looks tired of it all.

Am I an idiot for not hating this? I fear I might be because really, I didn't hate this. Don't be deluded, this isn't a GOOD movie. By objective narrative standards it's probably pretty dumb. And there's stuff that doesn't add up. And it's kinda just the same old song-and-dance from previous movies. At the very least it opened with a retelling of the key points from the series up to this point; excellent for the casual viewer like me. I just shut my brain off and it worked well enough for me.

Given that Blood Wars is such a poor entry to the Underworld franchise, the question that remains is why? The plot, cast and design are all on par with the other films. This films fails because it has no confidence to stand on its own. At 90 minutes (including credits), the whole affair feels rushed and studio-deadline-mandated. Jump cuts during conversations to speed them up do a disservice to Dance and Pulver. Slow-motion during fight scenes to pad the action. Shameful waste of potential.

It's pretty much part and parcel of the Underworld identity to have murky, blue-tinted cinematography, but here it is just obnoxiously dark. Yes, that means you can't see the action, but it's practically nonexistent until act 3 anyway; so instead of teeth and claws, it's vampire politics that abound, with twist after talky twist prompting more yawns than revelation. The Underworld franchise is no stranger to plot holes, retconning and convoluted lore, but the writing here is especially abysmal.

I was really over the series by the last one, so I wasn't looking forward to this one, but I feel like it was maybe slightly better? Or maybe I just don't care anymore. Anyway, it was still more of the same. It still took itself way too seriously, and there's little going on in the way of characters. Still, there were some okay action scenes, and I like the occasional use of practical effects. Very forgettable, but there are worse films being put out in Hollywood these days.

With each film, the writers' lack of imagination becomes more obvious. The films continue to expect viewers to be impressed by CGI werewolf transformations & banal shootouts in gothic surroundings. There are also large dumps of exposition about blood lines & royal lineages that are both bloated & too quick. Neither are "rules" explained w/ vamps now dying from broken necks & sword impalings. There is 1 fight on ice floes which feels different, but the rest is interchangeable w/ the 1st 2 films.

was decent one from the series, was expecting a bit more action, wound up getting more of a talk to death instead....

"Protect the Bloodline" Underworld: Blood Wars follows vampire warrior Selene as she fends off attacks from both Lycan's clan and the faction that betrayed her. With her allies David and his father Thomas, she must stop the eternal war between Lycan and vampires. Even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice for this.

Underworld: Blood Wars is like a party-line, with actors, writers, and director just phoning it in.

What you would expect. More of the same but just a little different. Good way to pass the time. I always think it's nice to watch an Underwold adaptation. 43/100.

This is the least interesting of this mediocre franchise. Kate Beckinsale gets to do a bit of acting in this but mostly it's poorly handled back stabbing political intrigue and CGI fight scenes. A lot of the story doesn't make much sense and it seems like at least part of the story was edited out but even so this managed to be mildly entertaining and gratefully fast paced.

This installment should have never been made. We don't need more of these movies. Please stop.

Just bad. The story is stupid, the dialogue is a crime. Even the action is thin and weak. There is far too much really boring gun fighting and some of it is against Nordic vamps in loin cloths wielding swords. Kate barely has any action. More often she just gets pummeled or scraps at baddies with a docile camera angle. The last fight is pathetic. The Coven is a fortress and yet the Lycans manage to drive vans right up to the front door. Now won't you join me as I say fuck in slow motion

I hate laughing at movies ironically with every fiber of my being but the slow mo and the lead dude saying fuck as the lycan's are coming into the fortress was too much.

One has to wonder if Beckinsale really knew what she was getting into when she signed up for this action franchise some 14 years ago. I suspect she might be as weary of her character's bloody way of life by now as I am (pluggedin.com)

Another one of the same. But Kate Beckinsale learns a new skill! Plus more is added to the story with her daughter and the fight with the Lycans continues. Cool choice of 'badguy Lycan', but poor backstory XD. Some cool fights btw :)

It's not good, but it is exactly what you should expect when watching the fifth movie in a series like this. Lots of action but not much substance.

My expectations were low for Underworld: Blood Wars. But scraping bottom would be a step up for this fifth chapter in the series, which inexplicably retains a loyal box-office following. Don't we deserve more than incompetent acting, an incoherent plot and CGI so bad it looks like your Uncle Harry shot it with his relic of a smartphone?

Hardly anything new, but it was surprisingly watchable considering it's like the 6th entry in this series of vampires with powers. Just something to mix with your popcorn for 90 minutes.

alright what the actual fuck was this ridiculous mess; nothing makes sense sdksjdksj. Varga was such a cutie tho UGH, but *spoiler alert* i'm really pissed with Michael's treatment, they really did him dirty, not even showing up at all in this film besides some shitty flashbacks, neither did he appear in the last installment. They hate him or something, gosh. I mean, maybe i'm at fault for even caring about this shitty franchise in the first place tbh.
