This is a laughably pointless "prequel" to the Underworld series. It also features some really terrible action choreography with people flipping around in the air upside down looking dumb. The horseback action sequences were the best thing about this movie but overall it's a tepid self indulgent Hollywood mess.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a major letdown if you were satisfied by the last two. The origins of the battle between the supernatural werewolves and aristocat vampires was not fully explained, and Bill Nighy doesn't have a patch on Beckinsale. The actual fighting between the two rival races are downright awesome though, and it features some breathtaking Medieval-esque choreography. Still, a pretty lame attempt to capture attention from movie-goers.

The mythology behind Underworld is explored greatly and, for the most part, this is the best in the series. The acting is handled well between Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen, the two most interesting characters in the franchise. The problem, though, is that it is still rife with cliches and generic action sequences that, at times, it is hard to really be captured by. This may be the most interesting of the three so far but it's still falling short of greatness.

Let's be honest and cut right to the chase: I think it's pretty obvious if you'll like this or not. If you liked the previous two Underworld films, full of generic fights, generic costumes and crap storyline you'll be right at home with this because that's exactly what this is. Well technically it's a "Underworld: History in Brief" movie but still, it's the same stuff we've seen before. If you liked the first two you'll like this.

As with the previous installments of the series this backstory is stylistically good, but could have been exectuted with a little more planning. While being better than the second overall, it still sometimes lacks flair beyond all the set-pieces and some sections of the film can become pretty dull. However when the action does get going it's enjoyable to watch, although there might not really be enough of it. As you'd expect, it's definitely at it's best when either Nighy or Sheen are on screen.

It looks good cinematography-wise, but that's almost all it has going for it. The story isn't anything that compelling or well-written, the fight scenes are rather boring, the acting ranges from mediocre to bad and the werewolves don't look that good at all. The plot was sloppy and too often a full moon (which seemed to come once every other night) or a sunrise would come just at the right time and save the day. Maybe if I cared about the characters I would have liked the story, but I didn't.

A prequel to the series, explains how the conflict was "born" in the first place. Even if you somewhat remember the first two movies, there is absolutely nothing you can not guess about the plot. The gift of "300", the idea of freedom in action movies, rings strong, provides in a sense comic relief. Bad CGI throughout, first, only and badly composed sex scene with fangs, oh dear, around the 15th minute. Completely anachronistic and forgettable.

Trash like this should be as unserious as possible, yet a curious solemnity hangs over the film. The weirdly cast Sheen and Nighy do bring the ham (the latter especially). It never really works, however, in part because of Mitra's lackluster effort. She's definitely pretty but compared to Beckingsale I think she's second-rate, at best. So is the film.

I admit that Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans is not a bad movie. For anyone who has seen the first two, this is just a extended look at the franchise's oh-so detailed mythology, a more in-depth telling of the flashbacks in underworld. As with the last two installents we are still treated to fairly awful dialogue and the vampires still aren't as developed as characters as they should be. The story keeps things simple, allowing the action to move on nicely. No particularly good or bad, but alright.

Better then 'evolution', but still a little boring and forgetable. Maybe because it's one and a half hour of watching the story which was told in first installment in a couple of sentences, and maybe a vampire film without real people taking place in some fairy-tale version of medival times is just not a thrill. Or maybe Nighy, the only real actor in the cast is not enough to pull this cross of Lord of the Rings with Van Helsing without Beckinsale's sex appeal.

It's very pretty and the action is beautiful, yet the plot is far too simple, the characters bland and it's most likely one of those movies you forget right away after seeing it. Even my love for werewolves couldn't save this one.

Stretching intersting 5 minute backstory in the 1st film into hour& ½ feature is exactly the more-of-the-same (& yet less) u'd expect. Substituting What-just-happened flash cut-editing 4 choreographed fight scenes ruins even the action scenes. So although the actors do their best (Bill Nighy shows impressive restraint in role made 4 scenery chewing), 1 can't help but miss KateBeckinsale clad in head to toe latex. Films this uninspired should never 4get the power of putting a knockout in latex

It doesn't add all that much to the series, as the important parts were shown in flashbacks in the first film. Still, getting to watch Michael Sheen's Lucian for an entire film, coupled with exciting action sequences and a good supporting cast definitely made it an enjoyable experience. It's a movie made almost entirely for the die-hard Underworld fans, and is ultimately worth watching, if only to remind yourself that there is still hope for the franchise.

I like pale blue tone of the series, I like Bill Nighy's take on his character, I find the fx quality nice to look at even when it looks artificial, I like the feeling when it reminds of the days we used to play Whitewolf's RPGs. Rise of the lycans (RoTL) feels like a big flashback, the story is almost told exatly like it was in the first movies so there is little to no suprises in it. The medieval age as a setting for a vampire movie sounds great, unfortunately the vampires in RoTL(as in the first movies) act more like humans than vampires. For an action movie the sequences are unfortunately unclear and the cam is too shaky.Bill Nighy as in the first movies keeps the movie interesting.

Of the 3 I like this one the best...new Underworld girl new direction. They go into the history of the death dealers and lycans...the acting was alot better, and the action was good but this movie was the first movie to slow down the action and let the actors do more than run shoot kill and cuss...though there is nothing wrong with any of that at times

Going back to the middle ages was a bad move for this franchise because it changes the entire tone of the film and its action sequences. In many ways this is a far inferior film to its two predecessors but it makes up for it by bringing back Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen in leading roles.

No Beckinsale in latex which was pretty much the only reason for anyone to watch the Underworld films. But surprisingly this is an improvement on the previous ones. Even though it's 90 minutes of something that was covered in a 5-min flashback in the first, the switch to a medieval setting and the focus on Nighy and Sheen improve this greatly. It's never good, but it's at least watchable and the direction is much improved over the last two. It's a shame the plot is so littered with gaping holes.

Kate Beckinsale is probably the primary reason I and many others watch these films and in this one they have Rhona Mitra, who may look similar, but just isn't the same. It actually fed into the mythology of the other films quite well. I don't really give a shit about what's going on or what happens to these characters, but it could've been worse. There was a decent amount of gore. The visual effects were sometimes alright, sometimes not. I was happy to see they didn't rely solely on CGI though.

A functional but needless prequel, stretching out backstory that took around 60 seconds to convey in the first film. The general execution is no better or worse than the previous entries, but there's nothing to set it apart visually and there's virtually nothing new in terms of information or world-building. The story is a cliche'd tragi-romance that's predictable even if you're unfamiliar with the lore.

Having never seen the rest of the Underworld series, I was approached to review this film, since it is a standalone prequel to the rest of the franchise. That probably wasn't the best idea, because I kind of hate this movie. The visuals are absolutely atrocious. The logic was silly. The romance felt forced, and most importantly, I wasn't entirely sure why the story was necessary to tell. It PROBABLY shouted out to certain details from the rest of the films, and I didn't catch those easter eggs.

"Every war has a beginning." During the Middle Ages, the Lycans are the slaves of the aristocratic vampires. Lucian (Michael Sheen), one of the Lycans, sets up the werewolves to fight against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the king of vampires. In his fight for their freedom, Lucian is joined by his secret lover Sonja (Rhona Mitra). Her presence causes the necessary changes in Lucian's plans.

More of the same, and your affection for this will be in proportion to your affection for the previous entries; doesn’t hit the same heights of cheerful silliness as the previous entry, but bringing Sheen and Nighy centre stage certainly pays dividends, with both actors delivering performances that just take the material seriously enough to work (especially Nighy). If it’s ultimately a bit thin and redundant, at least it’s a fairly good time.
