There's one shot here where Dorn is drunk and sweaty and pouring her heart out to Robertson, and he can't even look at her, but dammit, Fuller puts the camera right there in front of her face, and that moment of vulnerability isn't ignored like all the others in their lives. I think that's what I appreciate most about Fuller thus far, he seems to genuinely, unabashedly care about his characters, so that for all their isolation, he never leaves them entirely alone.

It's amazing how Sam Fuller usually managed to transcend low budgets and hokey narrative elements with frank characterizations and incredible style. His films are so expressive and display such vitality that they come like a punch to the gut. Nowhere is this more true than in Underworld U.S.A, a noirish revenge story made remarkable by that Fuller touch.

Vicious and magnificent. The film has a great script that keeps you on edge from start to finish, bolstered by some strong performances. Robertson is particularly good, making his character both ruthless and sympathetic.

Cliff Robertson quite good (in an unlikely role for him). Film starts out with a lot of energy, but bogs down a bit later on (mainly I think because Devlin's revenge motif gets lost among the other elements). The direction is stylish anyway (though with Fuller around, there is always a tendency for it to become stylized...that close-up sequence of doll faces, for example), with a few fun--and long--tracking shots, both coming and going.

Good old pulp-themed crime from Sam Fuller - it's been a while since I've gotten some of this. Never perfect, but always a joy.

This is a slightly above average film noir IMO. It has the noir look and feel to it and Cliff Robertson does a good job in his role.

Good Sam Fuller crime thriller. Cliff Robertson is better in this role than you might think

I think Martin Scorsese sums up the appeal of this movie the best: "Almost every shot is like a punch." It's more of Fuller's unbridled, passionate, blunt pulp cinema, with some absolutely beautiful visual techniques and a fantastic performance from Cliff Robertson.

The performances and characters are very bland to me. I just didn't think any of these people were interesting and I didn't get invested in them at all. Also I got the feeling that Fuller was trying too hard. The roughness, crassness and cynicism seem forced, or too on-the-nose. As a late period noir, perhaps Fuller was just trying to push the boundaries. But there are some excellent moments and touches. I didn't really enjoy it that much but I can see the appeal for some.

This is one hell of a tough little film. A police chief commits suicide rather than mess with this crime syndicate, who run over a child to get the message across to an underling who's turned informer. Still, it's Robertson who's the real psychotic in this story, utterly consumed by revenge and nothing else. The District Attorney cooperates with Robertson, not really blinking an eye at some of his more extreme tactics.
