Undine

If you're entering into this with any knowledge of the mythical legend of Undine than you will probably be unprepared for how much of this movie is about German architecture.

Trains are romantic, and Petzold knows this.

You always get exactly what you expect from Petzold. Which is a critique and a compliment.

As a side note I was very interested in the teachings about Berlin architecture. I feel they were having a hard time making the story click and make sense at the end because to me it didn't. Up until the end we were having a chill, believable and well acted romance movie without fluff that held my interest without problems.

The myth that this is built around is barely developed (and I certainly wouldn't have understood if I hadn't listened to an interview with the director), but Petzold is sure-footed enough as a director that the movie still works. Plus Beer and Rogowski are fantastic!

This is pretty much how great The Shape of Water -- which I like, btw -- could be. Peak contemporay low fantasy/romantic tragedy (featuring the german Rachel McAdams and the german Joaquin Phoenix) in the hands of such a subtle, elegant, yet often poignantly direct and straightforward director. Also: best collection of hugs in quite some time.

Petzold, filmlerinde duyguya ağırlık verirken filmin iyi olması gereken diğer konularda bir noksanlık yaşıyor. Undine'nin hikayesi esrarengiz, hissettirdikleri veya hissettirmeye çalıştıkları da yürek dağlayabilecek kadar acı ama seyirciye gereken motivasyonu vermekte zorlanıyor.

Undine-aqua-Christoph connnection was through out the movie, and of course it was the main theme. But I wish Undine-city-Christoph theme had not disappeared all of a sudden as well, because for me it took the movie to a different point and could not move to another point where it is no more. And "You know i'll have to kill you, if you leave me" was lame, where the female protagonist was already named Undine.

A beguiling performance from Beer keeps UNDINE afloat during its more elliptical stretches of storytelling. Extra points for the monologues about the modern history of Berlin architecture.

Intersting Epic Romance!!!

pek bi olayı yok ama sinemada izledim o yüzden biraz daha güzel geldi. standart vampir (vampir filmi olmamasına rağmen) aşk filmlerine benziyor ve alman mimarisi hakkında bi sürü şey öğretiyor.

Boring first hour. A letdown from director Petzold.

A bit of a mixed bag--some aspects are really good, and I really liked Paula Beer's performance. In the end I was left feeling like it could have been something more, but it's a nice little understated film.

This retelling of classic fantasy story is best in its fabulist parts, but falls short on some of the dramatic parts.

It falls apart towards the end, but the first 2/3 are outstanding.
