Une Visite au Louvre is a companion film to Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet's Cézanne from a decade earlier. The opening title of that later work indicates that it was inspired in 1990 by Dominique Païni, then film programmer at the Louvre. Like Cézanne, Une Visite au Louvre is also based on Joachim Gasquet's book, Cézanne, specifically on the chapter entitled "Le Louvre," which recounts Cézanne's visit to the Louvre, accompanied by the young Gasquet. What a great idea: Cézanne's words, as recorded by Joachim Gasquet during a visit to the Louvre, accompanied here by images of the artworks being described and discussed. Nothing more is needed, and almost nothing more is offered, bar one or two escapes from the museum. It seems that Straub and Huillet are a pair who ask themselves fundamental questions: what is this invention, cinema, and what can it do that cannot be done otherwise? I'll take this over RUSSIAN ARK every day of the week.

jean-marie and danièle's film about bach was rather pleasant, because i'm interested in music. this one is less interesting, because looking at paintings and sculptures doesn't do nearly as much for me.
