During the cold and rainy off-season a man (Gérard Philipe) arrives in a seaside town and, giving his name only as Pierre, checks into the only hotel which remains open. Here's a praised French noir-ish experience that didn't do all that much for me, unfortunately. First off, it is okay... good even. It just wasn't as atmospheric and mysterious to me as it was for others. And I usually praise French film for its wonderful dark atmosphere during this period. Hell, most of the French films I've seen these past years had more atmosphere than this. There are a couple of moments where it was close, but I found that aspect very bare.
