Unfinished Song

One of movies about singing that doesn't bank on hot teenagers or perfect singers and it's worth a watch.

A glacially slow pace makes Unfinished song a chore to watch despite a great cast and good performances. The gimmick of old-aged pensioners singing (modernish) pop song gets old quickly, and what remains of the plot is a so-so tale of an widower coming to terms with his grief. There are some good scenes, but the film is just alright.

The plot is entirely predictable, and even worse appears to be something like a first draft. A lot of the twists and turns are incredibly contrived, and most annoyingly this becomes more and more pronounced the closer to the end this film gets. I still enjoyed it, it's a nice, heartwarming, and lovable film. The cast is great. But a lot of potential is wasted with this.

Suffers from a few of the minor problems that plagued recent retiree-targeters Quartet and Marigold Hotel (notably, some cringey lines and a predictable plot progression) but there's plenty here to make up for these minor shortcomings. Terence Stamp's performance as a cynical old man whose love for his wife is ever-present is superb, one of the best I've recently seen. The direction strikes a perfect balance between detachment and sentimentality. And the tear-jerking moments work brilliantly.
