Liv Ulmann makes a very splendid debut as the titular character in this last movie of Norway's first women director. She and her lover runaway together to a secluded cabin. Both in style and in how it questions 50s (sexual) morality it's very 50s Bergman-esque, especially Summer with Monika.

A poor imitation of Summer with Monika.

Of bloody course a Norwegian "Summer With Monika" ripoff has to be set in the mountains rather than the archipelago. Ullmann shines in her debut, and Carlmar may be more on her character's side in the wholesome-guy-loose-girl dyad than the script lets her be. The rest is distinctly so-so despite a decent third-act shakeup.
