Cliched as anything, and with boring stretches, but there are some great quiet moments, a few expert touches, and two great action sequences to round it out

Viewed December 30, 2021. In what seems to be a running theme for DeMille, this is a mixed bag by definition, throwing together some hack comedy, giant action setpieces and moments of destruction (in this one, a superb train derailment scene), and moments of romance in a haphazard fashion and occasionally hitting on a thrilling idea. This one benefits immensely from its great cast and the fact that trains are inherently cinematic no matter what else is going on screen around them.

Labored DeMille epic featuring Barbara Stanwyck with the worst Irish accent you've ever heard.

3 years earlier, in "The Plough and the Stars", it was determined that Barbara Stanwyck not attempt an Irish accent. Sadly, wiser heads did not prevail here. Akim Tamiroff's "Mexican" accent is amusing, too--it often sounds half French. Entertaining enough saga of America's push west building railroads. The Cheyenne sequence has every Western cliché in the book...but before they were clichés, I guess. DeMille sure was a size queen--read up on the premier sometime.

Cecil B. DeMille joins the western revival with this epic attempt - Union Pacific (1939)! This is a ambitious undertaking, and is in many ways similar to Dodge City (1939).... which almost puts DeMille's attempt to shame. Union Pacific has all the wild west clichés, but feels like it's taking shortcuts in establishing it's emotional directive. The romance dynamic however creates a interesting dilemma. Will Stanwyck fall for the hero, or the tweener? That carried the film fine.
