Dream journal, entry 423. Last night I dreamt HAL 9000 was in some dumb lab and shot lightning at The Man from the excellent miniseries The Booth At The End. Then HAL turned into Black Dynamite and he fought with JCVD who hacked his daughter back to health. After writing this down I now realise it was literally the plot of the crappy movie I watched the night before and I forgot as soon as the credits rolled. Woops.

Where the first was a poor attempt at a blockbuster, this first official sequel is pure 90s schlock, including all the worst element of 90s shlock but also with its entertainment value.

All-around much worse than the original in every respect. Some silly opening action is the only thing that elevates this above the TV movie entries (II and III).

I just loved how this movie throws it's predecessors into the garbage and makes it's own rules. Van Damme plays even the serious scenes with a smirk and Michael Jai White actually kicks ass. Excellent b-movie.

Upping the production values from the TV movies brought the series down a bit, but it's still quite a lot of fun at its best. Also the action scenes with Michael Jai White are awesome.

This is a guilty pleasure. It's not particularly good, but it's a fun film.

Why would Jean-Claude, who has actually made some decent action movies with clever lines take on this complete dog? No it doesn't make sense, and worse the writing is deplorable. On the bright side, a decent body count, some fair hand to hand, a bucket load of explosives, & four guys on fire with a blasting heavy metal soundtrack! Wish half the lines had been cut.

One choice line in an otherwise astounding bad action movie.

I started watching this series, since I'd seen the first one when I was young. Then I watched this, noting that it was significantly more banal and uninspired than even the first one, then I come to rate it and found apparently I've seen this too. It came back in a haze, and now I feel like I could have just skipped ahead. Disappointing.

The director clearly didn't know what he was doing, and the editor tries to save things the best way it can. The result is an entertaining mess full of comedy. Yes, comedy, because the way many of the scenes are constructed is clearly, deliberatly trying to be a comic act. For goodness sake: The main villain is like Arnold as the Terminator acting as Hercules from New York. He gets shot, smashed, pushed, burned... and comes back like a cartoon character.

What should have been an awesome revival in a series whose previous two installments were essentially non-cannon repurposed mini-series episodes, but I shudder to think that the second or third ones could hold a candle to just how horrifically stanky this shit show was. It blows my mind that this one even had a theatrical release, I can only imagine it was hard to supply theaters with copies without them immediately bursting into flames and descending to hell.

Something is a little off with this sequel, I think Van Damme isn't wooden enough, he's playing it much too human. The story is rather silly, which I can let slide in this type of film. There is at least some decent action scenes to make it viewable.

A poor following to a mostly entertaining B movie original. It's wooden and boring and dumb.

Universal Soldier - The Return fails on almost every level, from its generic story to its second rate action and subpar performances.

The director of the film seems to have a bit of a bra and cleavage fetish. At the beginning, during what turns out to be a training exercise (the audience doesn't know it yet), the soldiers capture a woman and rip off her shirt, with intent to rape her. But then we learn it's an exercise - isn't that a bit far for an exercise? They were actually going to rape her? And given that the soldiers are controlled by an AI, does that mean the AI was going a bit Demon Seed?

Jean-Claude Van Damme returns as cybernetic warrior Luc Deveraux in this sequel to the 1992 action hit. After barely surviving his experiences as apart-human/part-robot Universal Soldier, Luc has opted to stay out of the front lines and work with a military project to refine and perfect the system. However, something goes wrong, and S.E.T.H. (Michael Jai White), the android supercomputer leading the new breed of soldiers, suddenly develops a murderous mind of his own. Luc only can stop them.

So, bad acting, simple sets, weird seemingly random deployment of extremely '90s heavy metal, a subplot about hacking... did they accidentally release the FMV from a Playstation game into theaters?

Complete rubbish. The hacker character, Goldberg's acting, the news chick, complete lack of Kiana Tom in exercise gear, no JCVD splits-punch, the music. Ugh, just rubbish. Needs more Dolph Lundgren!

Terrible film. Acting is very poor and there are so many scenes where I thought 'why the hell did the director do it like that?'. Van Damme - shame on you.

have you ever seen so many explosions in your life jesus. my psi was 6 which i find to be totally ridiculous because despite the fact that i could have written this movie, there are so many movies i would put behind it. that's why it's got the van damme stamp of approval. i made this a double feature with l'avventura.
