Sometime between 8pm on July 1st and 7am on July 3rd, 2003, Doug Bruce lost himself. That morning, riding alone on a New York subway headed towards Coney Island, he could not remember his name, where he worked, who his friends were, how much money he had in his bank account. He was without his identity. Unknown White Male is the true story of how Bruce, a successful former stockbroker, struggles to learn who he was and who he will become. The documentary, produced, directed and edited by Bruce's longtime friend, Rupert Murray, chronicles this profound journey. (Wellspring)

It would be going too far to call Doug Bruce (or this film) a fraud, but it would probably not be going far enough to simply conclude that his amnesia was psychological rather than neurological: as such, his condition seems essentially questionable, if not indeed doubtful. This documentary tends to avoid such questions, ostensibly out of respect for the subject, but perhaps out of concern for the viability of the film as well. This also affects the likeability of the protagonist.

Am I mean for saying that I was less and less interested as it unfolded that he was very successful?

The most interesting thing about this now might be how completely it itself has been forgotten. There's virtually nothing online about Bruce or the film past 2007. No updates on this singular event, no appearances in a "Remember these 45 amnesiacs?" Buzzfeed list circa 2014. But there is this Washington Post piece from 2006 that shines some needed light, especially if, like me, your bullshit detector went off at "...and Chelsea football club, whoever the hell THEY are": tinyurl.com/qvawmfji

I'm not convinced of the legitimacy of this story, but it sure is a great story that raises interesting questions.
