Great action, a nice (although admittedly forced at some points) story and an absolutely amazing soundtrack make for a pretty good movie in my opinion. Bob Hoskins is, as usually, very impressive.

Jet Li's best movie filmed outside Asia, until The Expendables. There's no smooth wushu in this film, Jet is ruthless and feral, tearing into his opponents with wild, unconventional attacks. Hoskins makes a great villain, and Freeman brings a touch of class to a role he probably could have sleepwalked through.

Decent, but short on action. At least there were very few wires involved. Anyways, all the awesome is provided in full by Bob Hoskins. I mean, seriously - Bob Hoskins is probably one of the best movie badasses ever in this. If they had lost a little of the sappiness and provided some more violence and guns... this could've been one of the great action movies. Instead, it's a pretty good flick. And that's okay.

There are plenty of top-notch fight scenes here, but the real surprise is that Leterrier and Besson, the creative team behind the ridiculous Transporter franchise, have actually created an action flick with real palpable human drama. This is the best acting Li has ever done in an English film, and he's got good company in Freeman and Hoskins, the latter of which makes a terrific villain. A much better film than I was expecting. Good soundtrack, too.

Great scenes with Morgan Freeman and Jet Li. I loved how Jet Li's facial expressions conveyed his feelings. He truly is a great actor, not just an action star. Plus, the soundtrack by Massive Attack is wickedly good.

Surprisingly good actually. I first thought that this would be fighting, some more fighting and for a change.. some more fighting but luckily it isn't. There's actually a pretty good story through the film, which I really didn't expect. Morgan Freeman is good, just as Jet Li, and the fighting scenes are sometimes too unbelievable, but they're just great to watch. Great job.

Typical Luc Besson's action film. Feel-good family drama and American gladiators look-alike doing some kung fu fighting. There's no way this film can be taken seriously, but it's decent entertainment.

Not terrible, but not terribly good. Morgan Freeman is pretty funny. I thought I was going to die when he cracked that fucker over the head with the flower pot and told him to "shut the hell up." In fact, I'm giggling in front of my computer just thinking about it.

A surprisingly enjoyable movie. The contrast of violent, kinetic martial arts scenes and quiet, character-defining home scenes was an enjoyable touch. The movie won't win any awards for profundity or screenwriting, but for a martial arts movie with a semblence of substance, you could do a lot worse.

Surprisingly beautiful soundtrack considering the nature of the film. Completely misleading advertising campaign though, when I put the film in I was expecting to watch a balls-to-the-wall Statham-esque action flick. What I instead received was a shit load of character development with only a few punches thrown. It was a pleasant surprise but wasn't mind blowing enough to make this film great. Just decent.

Remaking the Frankenstein myth as a martial arts action movie? Not that bad of an idea. I'm sure there's much worse thought of everyday. Set your expectations on low and you might find some dumb fun herein, but it didn't do anything for me. All points go towards Bob Hoskins.

This film's overtly heavy-handed action concept is besieged with a strong emotional narrative, a serious plot driven by tragedy, not punching. These conflicting movie tones surprisingly find a middle-ground in what is Li's finest work as an actor, not a martial artist. Freeman helps immensely in ratifying the film's absurd plot; even then, this is a very strong cast. While many cinematic elements are taken from Euro-gangster films, the classical choices in music elevates the urban aesthetics.

I don't quite get the hate for this film. Sure, the dialogue is awful, the acting is hammy as hell and the story is questionable at best, but when appreciated for what it is, it's actually really good and the three genres blends together fine. The three lead performances are excellent: Bob Hoskins is enjoyably sleazy and hammy, Freeman is sickeningly nice and Jet Li is actually a really good actor, whose animalism is pretty believable. Soundtrack's good and the action is amazing, obviously.

The villain is well and truly disgustingly villainous. Danny is feral, and tightly controlled. This is the story of his escape from servitude, of his journey towards humanity. It's well acted and engaging, if strangely segmented into three distinct portions. If watched for just the fighting or just the redemption, it's gonna seem odd.

Unleashed is possibly my favourite Jet Li film. And it's without doubt his best English language film. I never particularly welcomed Jet Li's transition from Chinese to Hollywood cinema, but this is his one English language film where he actually acts and there's more going on than nonsensical fight scenes. However the fight sequences and choreography here are some of Jet Li's finest. Bob Hoskins is great as per usual and Morgan Freeman is half decent also. And the score is a worthy mention.

Crime Boss Bart (Bob Hoskins) raises orphan Danny (Jet Li) with no knowledge of anything other than how to fight, using him as an enforcer when debts must be collected. Planning to enter Danny into a fight tournament and retire with the prize money, Bart disappears after a deadly drive-by shooting. There isn't actually a leash, but I guess 'Uncollared' doesn't have the same ring to it. I enjoyed this far more than I expected to after sleeping on it for years. If you're only interested in the fights, the middle of the film will leave you wanting but the beginning and end really deliver. Jet Li gives a great performance all around and the rest of the main cast elevate the material. The characters and story are a big step up from most english-language martial arts films.

A bit childish at times in the action or characters, but it's a lot of fun. Interesting plot and character growth, and a novel role for someone with the filmography Jet Li has, which allows for an unusual fighting style. Fun action and fight choreography too. I guess only Besson can make murders, abuse, and lifelong trauma still feel heart warming?
