I really liked this. Unsane promises a B-movie feel with a small budget and style of filming that's suppose to make you feel paranoid and claustrophobic, and ya directed by Steven Soderberg. It pretty much delivers everything it promises. If you're in the mood for a fun, psychotic thriller on a smaller scale, this is right up your alley. Claire Foy is good and it's short and never boring. I would recommend it.

if you give a smartphone to anyone, he'll likely take a picture of his own face or try to navigate the way out of his pants via google maps. if you give a smartphone to soderbergh, he shoots a fucking feature length psychological thriller with abundent social undertones. and it works. he may have a pretty even hit/shit-ratio, but you gotta love how that man simply won't allow himself to be pinned down.

Unsane is a psychological paranoia stalker thriller that happens to be shot on an iPhone, giving it an immersive cinematographic style whose immersion is broken by a couple of poor decisions that take us out of the experience. It also doesn't play with the "is she/isn't she crazy?" story as long as one might expect, taking away one of its most enjoyable elements. Still, with a great performance from Claire Foy and enough working in its favor, Unsane is a worthwhile thriller.

It doesn't really draw attention to itself as a movie shot on a cell phone, but there's an undeniable technological hum to its style that makes the movie that much creepier. It's a genuinely modern paranoia thriller. It has its flaws on the script level but that is all superceded by Soderbergh's ace compositions and snappy editing.

Essentially, its a bad student film in the hands of a master filmmaker. The sheer raw talent wins out and makes "Unsane" a captivating experience despite its glaring weaknesses in plot and writing. It was impressive to see how Soderbergh managed to pull this off without banking on a gimmick like found-footage, he uses the iPhone seriously, and I think his dedication pays off.

Obviously knowing how this was shot allows a person to appreciate it more, but even if you don't I think it is shot well enough to be seen as claustrophobic and intimate. I could have done with more guessing about whether or not she truly is crazy because that was the most entertaining part (even if it's been done a million times before). I was entertained the entire time but the final act is a little uneven; however the final shot is somehow incredibly creepy (good music). Foy put in good work.

Starts of as a nice horror movie branching reality with imagination and ends as pure slasher. Abandons the initial mystery a bit too soon but stays endearing nontheless. Claire Foy pulls some Piper Chapman level of asshole move at one point. Which is nice.

Creepy with it's sure dose of cleverness. I praise the iphone approach and many of the shots that add to the film's anxiety. There were parts in the script that I felt couldn't shy away from being weak, but didn't kill the tension for me. Soderbergh gives great eyesight on this legitimate paranoia.

The sterile feel the iPhone shooting gives works perfectly for this film. Im not sure if it's intentional or not but it's a nice homage to some of the SOV horror films.

Unsane is a very entertaining Thriller, even if the plot in today’s setting requires a slight suspension of disbelief. Claire Foy is great as usual, and I personally really liked the performances from some of the supporting cast. The odd camera angles and style that Soderbergh uses also help the film feel unique and stand out from other “Are they crazy?” Thrillers. Totally worth renting.

Amusingly and originally (and indeed horrifyingly) combines the idea of making a thriller with an update of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST for the neoliberal age. The iPhone filming works well and the star gives an enjoyable performance. Soderbergh is willing to try things, and sometimes they work: such is the case here.

Soderbergh's fascinating post-recession investigation into the collapse of economic and social welfare institutions on the head of the individual continues, here with more explicit condemnation of the pharmaceutical, mental healthcare, and insurance industries. His micro-budget flexibility pairs nicely with the grungy world, and the iPhone gimmick especially reflects the material with a disorienting and brittle veneer. An enthusiastic and youthful independent from an established visionary.

The low-budget-like style here is just so cool and unique: there's the discomforting and claustrophobic wide-angle lens, the intense close-ups and other interesting angles, the deliberate and concise editing, the unnerving original score, the perfect A-lister cameo, the freeze-frame under rapid end credits. The story is a little wonkily constructed at points (see the puzzlingly early mystery reveal) but is always creepy and thrilling, carried by Foy's strong central performance.

A mess of screenplay is saved by Soderbergh's style an innovation as well as Claire Foy's nerve riddled performance. The film teases that it will deal with the injustices of the mental health system, but it is really more concerned with being a thriller in B-movie style. That tease seems a little nonchalant.

I wish the question of her sanity wasn't resolved so quickly and I felt like the ending was too conventional but I really enjoyed this. It is very tense and claustrophobic. I could watch an entire movie focusing on the partner cop the receptionist & coffee.

Opressive, claustrophobic thriller has echoes of Polanski about it (specifically THE TENANT) but the tension starts to evaporate at the mid-point once a key ambiguity becomes solved and literalised, and the film turns into a Soderbergh spin on the slasher genre; while it's always fun to see Soderbergh in noodling mode, the first half promises a much better (and edgier) film. Props to Foy, whose vividly emotional performance is painful at times, and Leonard, who is also excellent as an orderly.

This is the sort of full-on thriller that seems far more freakier than most horror films. Dishing out a slightly pulpy story of a woman wrongly committed, all the while taking its topics of nefarious mental institutions, stalkers, and unrequited love seriously, Unsane is a rather delirious and very fun story that's brilliantly told, helped by an involving performance from Foy who makes this lead character a tough and assertive protagonist who tackles each overwhelming problem head-on.

Soderbergh is often praised for his diversity, but to this viewer he is an ordinary journeyman forced into polystylism because he isn't talented enough to forge his own singular path. Unsane is more faux experimentation from the king of the nerds shot with the usual detachment that is readily mistaken for intelligence. Despite its surface appearance, it's average genre fare jazzed up with a visual gimmick (shot on an i-phone! Brilliant!) and lame social critique, but Foy does solid work.

Went in with quite reserved expectations, but gradually became more and more impressed with Unsane. For Soderbergh to pull this off with relatively shitty Iphone 7s takes some serious skill. Sure it isn't perfect, but in a way it contributes to the slightly absurdist and claustrophobic atmosphere. There is an almost palpable tension throughout, the actors doing the best they can and an interesting script to boot. I was impressed. I thought I'd never request cam phone films, but here we are.

Although smartly directed as always (the iPhone photography actually adds an urgency and uncomfortable clarity that fits the story) and with a fierce and completely committed performance by Claire Foy, this unfortunately doesn't add up to all that much. It begins cleverly but, without giving anything away, it ends up following a less interesting path as the plot unfolds. Well crafted but less interesting than it appears at first.

Claire Foy is amazing, beautiful and entertaining in this surprisingly decent low budget thriller. She carries the movie well. A few of the plot points seemed unlikely, but the suspense was good with many tense moments. Joshua Leonard was suitably creepy, sick and pathetic. Clever writing keeps it interesting. Good music and production quality. Juno Temple was perhaps underutilized. Some uneven pacing, but overall this was satisfying.

Ehhhhhh so it's not the mindbender or character piece I'd hoped for. The camera gimmick was used effectively, but I'm not in jawdrop awe. It plays out like a movie 15-20 years old. This gut punishing movie only had one flaw: Matt Damon's casting. It took away attention from an otherwise brilliant 'prevent rape' / 'She asked for it' scene. (You are stalked? He doesn't matter, but you should sell your car). In general Soderbergh, the writing and Foy's edgy acting accumulate a ridiculous mountain of what women have to go through on a daily basis. Believe women - or people will die! (Oh yeah, and it was shot on an iPhone. That didn't help with feeling comfortable either)

Only interesting for the first 15 minutes. Foy's troubled protagonist becomes too submissive too soon, and snap, we've lost interest. All the psychological trickery and ambiguity - supposedly the meat and potatoes of the film - seems half-hearted. I was disappointed with the characters and also with the apparent technological step backwards Soderbergh chose to take (shooting on some cheap digital device makes an ugly image, so it ought to have a reason for being that way).

Very mixed bag. On the one hand, you have Foy's great performance (American accent excepting), an interesting premise/set-up, and some direction that gave effect to the tension here. On the other hand, the plot quickly devolved into uninspired horror that asked for massive suspension of disbelief. Probably worth seeing just for the impressive work with the iPhone.

This is one of the few movies I got to see in theaters this year sadly, but even if I'd seen more, I'd say this was one of the better. The cheap look doesn't ruin anything for me, I don't find myself wishing it was a better quality. The characters were believable enough, which meant the acting must have been somewhat decent. I was on edge and excited to watch the film progress, regardless of which turns it took.

The first half of the film hinges on an effectively clever, and mostly realistic premise for a horror film. I was pretty sold on what seemed like a solid B movie. But then for whatever inane reason, about halfway through it just goes to shit. It felt like the script was hijacked by an eight year old who ruined a decent film with gratuitous, improbable cliches and recklessness all over.

Much better than Contagion. I didn't know it was shot an iPhone when I watched it, but I appreciated the aesthetic and feel it effectively contributes to the mood. I find the set-up about a mental institution that holds you against your will much more interesting than the stalker storyline that eventually takes over. Ultimately, it seems like a lazy attempt to make a point that corrupt institutions harbor bad apples.

for all its purported value as a bastion of connectivity and safety, the cellphone is also the ultimate enabler of voyeuristic impulses, detachment from reality, and filling the pockets of those in power. here soderbergh traps his could-be unstable heroine in a maze of them, having her flail under the uncomfortably close surveillance of we the many-faced stalker and paying customer, modernising and energising a tired old trope at least a little. shoulda called it shock siridor though.

Personally, I really hate the 'Why wont anyone believe me?' niche sub-genre so this was never gonna play well for me. However while the iPhone cinematography actually works well during the hospital scenes, providing a claustrophobic feel, it was irritating and gimmicky during the normal scenes. Despite all this, Unsane could have worked ok if it didn't require the viewer to just accept a constant stream of farcical developments that I just couldn't stomach as I wasn't enjoying the ride anyway.

The iPhone approach doesn't bother me -- its deep, sparse lighting, for example -- but it also doesn't serve to anything new, despite Soderbergh's constant vibrant interest in fabricating scenes of unease and discomfort. He continues in his crusade of criticizing late capitalism and cheap human connections in the era of digital life and disposable images, but I think the divided plot -- #metoo stalker thriller vs asylum thriller - never gets as intriguing as he planned.
