Until They Get Me

Until They Get Me

1917
Drama
58m
A brawny Northwoodsman is pursued by a Northwest Mountie after he kills a man in self-defence. Borzage merges the Western with the melodrama, displaying an unconventional attention to his female characters, strong character development & moral conflict. In Borzage's world, women are in charge & the radiant & sexy Pauline Stark, who dominates this film, emerges as the first stirring representation of his "ideal female": feisty, small-framed, & endlessly tender. Nicely shot, though the print that's out there is rather bad. Pauline Stark's performance carries most of the picture through one of those "rambunctious Western lass comes of age" plots that were so popular back then.

Even early in his directorial career Frank Borzage knew romance life few others. Simple story and production values, but with human warmth that shines through the poor quality print that's available!

Peaks early, but has a strong if simple visual flair throughout.
