In a word: assured. A second springs to mind: effortless. Substance is kind of snuck into the perfectly structured script yet doesn't get bogged down by the light-weight humorous elements. Clooney is great. Reitman almost blows it ("Welcome to the family", my a**) but all is forgiven by the, at best, bittersweet ending. His movies have a tendency to seem great while you are watching them to then fade in your memory, perhaps because his main talent is observing small details. A third word: Funny.

"Up in the Air" has a real class to it. The screenplay is smart, enjoyable and delivered well especially when people are being let go. George Clooney's natural charm makes Ryan Bingham an instantly likable character. His female counterparts (Farmiga and Kendrick) were also excellent. Only real flaw is the slight dragging in the more 'grounded' wedding scene where some of the films charm was lost.

Not the best picture that everyone is predicting it to be but it was still an okay movie. Didn't blow me away and didn't really take many chances either. In other words - too Hollywood. Also, if you are gonna cheat on your husband why in the hell would you give your home address to someone that you are banging on the side? At least Reitman showed that Juno was probably just a fluke and how important a script really is. I think you could cut the motivational speaker gig and have a better movie.

This is an exceptional piece of work. The films leads are all on top form, particuarly Clooney who delivers a performance that is understated but has a deceptive depth to it. Kendrick is also absolutely charming, & Bateman again delivers a cameo role that lifts a movie just like in 'State of Play'. It almost reaches total brilliance, with its sharp script, humour & odd moment of classy cinematography. Shame it just has little to say other than; "Alone = Bad and Family = Good". Still supurb.

The first half was much better than the second, which deteriorated into a meandering, uninteresting escapade. Still a good movie, though, and George Clooney gives a great performance. The french movie references were also neat.

Yeah, it's brilliant. There's never been a better time to release a film about the meaning of social structures, and the generational difference between relationship quantity VS quality, than this fickle era. The film's most rewarding component is its ever-so-ambiguous ending, which underscores how assured and ballsy the craftsmanship actually is.

Very good film. It is certainly the best and most mature from Reitman. The one misstep, in my opinion, is having him do the whole character change thing by walking out in the middle of a speech - it's a cliche in a movie that mostly lacked tacky cliches. There are a number of interesting thematic threads and themes, too many to detail here. It might be interesting to compare this film to the cyberpunk movement in literature; they share a lot in common.

A great comedy, though I don't really consider it a romantic comedy. Admittedly a good portion of it deals with relationships but certainly not in a standard rom-com fashion. It gives a great look at how technology used to bring us closer together can in fact be used to disconnect us from one another. George Clooney is fantastic and it's great to see Jason Bateman get some dramatic roles, proving he doesn't have to be hilarious to be good. Really a class film.

Good film; frequently funny, occasionally touching, well-acted. Anna Kendrick did a pretty job at carrying most of the movie even across from Mr. Movie Star George Clooney. I don't think it really deserves Best Picture hype, because a wedding interlude in the second half kind of gums up the momentum, but still, definitely recommended.

George Clooney has the charm and screen presence of Cary Grant or Clark Gable, and he uses those gifts to their utmost extent with a commanding performance--one of many found in the movie--in this terrific film. Jason Reitman can do no wrong, and his directorial trademarks are all over this masterpiece. The only problem I have with the film is its--albeit limited--voice-overs. Clooney is a good enough actor to get some emotions across without having to literally explain them to an audience.

Very Good. Clooney is great as the emotionally numb frequent flying angel of corporate death. The theme is nothing new, its all been done before and here its done a bit better. But the formulaic plot more than makes up for it with a great unconventional honest ending. Some great career making performances and an over all fun vibe lift this way above similar drama/coms. Highly recommended.

A terrific film that has stayed on my mind for longer than I thought it might. I knew I liked it immediately, but my overall appreciation has only grown with time. This is Reitman's best film yet, and his directorial skill continues to evolve with each film. He strikes a perfect tone here, really capturing the isolation and hidden sadness of this modern life. All three leads give terrific work, but it's the brief roles that stuck with me - Simmons especially. Not perfect, but pretty damn great.

It's a well-made film -- well-shot and well-acted and all that. The message is clear but it doesn't beat you over the head with it. However, it's very much a Hollywood film, and it's sheen is far too bright for its subject matter. And for me, this detracts from the film a good bit. Oh, one more thing: Vera Farmiga looks perfect naked. Hubba hubba, yowzers, etc.

This is the film that shows Reitman is a filmmaker to watch and already better than his father in many ways. Thank You for Smoking and Juno are both very good movies, but Up in the Air is the most pertinent and timely. It also creates a character in Ryan Bingham who is in turns charming and horrible. Clooney's performance largely makes the film and although it isn't the best of the year, it is worth seeing.

Second 2009 movie after Funny People to forsake a somewhat interesting first half to drive home the importance of holding middlebrow bourgeois values -- family stability home, blah blah blah -- by making Bingham's inevitable late-game epiphany arrive tragically too late, essentially punishing him for his departure from a more traditional lifestyle. Typically slick direction from Reitman tends to neutralize the emotional weight.

Very predictable if you happen to look at your watch. The first half is funny as a corporate version of 25th Hour and Fight Club, but later on it drags and turns into these shitty fake Indian, Zen quotes about life etc. Read somewhere that the random fired people did think that they were being interviewed for a documentary, "nice touch".

Up in the Air is the best film of 2009 by a long shot. Clooney's character is so real, and the reactions of the men and women he fires range from confused, distressed, angry, resentful, downcast, sombre and ultimately outraged. There emotions are just so human and concrete. Clooney backs this all up with a look of commiseration and condolence. This is truly his best performance to date. There are many other standouts in this film also, such as Anna Kendrick. A gem to watch.

Jason Reitman is officially a brilliant filmmaker. After "Thank You For Smoking" and "Juno," he delivers another surefire awards contender. His third film couldn't be more timely, thought-provoking, darkly funny, challenging and heartbreaking. George Clooney has one of his best roles to date--able to evoke disdain and sympathy within a brisk 2 hours. "Up in the Air" is a brilliant, airy, intelligent, and tragic film well worth seeing.

Dies a sudden, unnatural death in the last 15 minutes but up until then it's more or less perfect. I hate to use the word "poignant" for fear of sounding like a douche, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this film's poster next to that word in a dictionary. Thank you Jason Reitman for not following the book, as this was one of the rare occurences where the movie is a trillion times better than the book. I hated this from the poorly made Dallas-intro, through-out the slick-voice-over-about-shady-business crap, aided by a "The Graduate light" soundtrack. Clooney - whilst okay - doesn't reach his Solaris high. Kendrick is piss annoying, especially in one excruciatingly poorly acted break-down scene. The plot is retarded with its TERMINATOR concept, and the "people who fire you are lonely losers" pad on the back for the American blue collar is just plain dumb. Sub-par indie-rom-com-drama. Avoid.

Not bad, sort of a modernized version of The Accidental Tourist. It's not brilliant, but it's not stupid either. The film traffics in somewhat trite Cameron Crowe-isms, but is significantly buoyed by George Clooney's endless buckets of charm. As for the two nominated supporting actresses... Vera Farmiga is pretty good. Maybe not that noteworthy, but decent. However, I really didn't care for Anna Kendrick that much. She struck me as a poor man's Amy Adams, and I don't like Amy Adams.

To me the film felt like two movies. I enjoyed the first half of the movie quite a bit, and the second half was just so-so. The comedic bits about flying are hilarious, and Clooney's character's job provided an interesting anchor to weave the plot around. That said, I felt the movie did drag in a few places and I wanted a better thread between the first & second halves of the film. & while I was pleased the ending wasn't predictable, because of that I wanted more explanation than was there.

I don't know how Hurt Locker beat this for the Academy Award. The storyline, the evolution of Clooney's character from a heartless goal-oriented suit into a human that's missed so much in life and the twist that threatened to derail his metamorphosis, and all of the personal interactions make this movie one of the best I've seen in a long time.

A modern morality tale that is thematically interesting but politically tepid. The likeable cast works hard but the filmmakers lack the courage or capacity to develop the questions raised into any kind of critique. Just when the viewer is led to think the film has taken a tediously conventional turn into feel-good romantic comedy, the rug is removed, but what results merely up-ends the narrative and leaves the audience, essentially, with nothing left to hold onto. Winds up rather trite.

There's not a whole lot wrong with the movie. All the actors did a good job, including the ones with only a few moments on screen who were the people getting fired. The film itself was tight with witty-dialogue and besides a few cliched moments is extremely well-written (and I was very glad it didn't sell out in the ending). Although I was at first irritated by the cliche wedding scene and walking-out-on-your-speech scene, I later realized that they were necessary in leading to the atypical ending. However, I still feel like those latter scenes in the movie halted an incredible momentum it had up to that point; it had had such a perfect balance of comedy and drama. Kendrick and Farmiga (and her ass) are really great here, but it's Clooney's performance that is most deserving of praise.

First, a confession: Jason Reitman and his father are two of my favourite directors. Like his other films, this is a film with a strong message. The trouble is, I liked the character of Alex so much that I felt as if I had been dumped just like Clooney's character, and just like all those laid-off employees. An almost-great portrait of a man's crisis of faith in his lifestyle of solitude. Good performances from all and solid direction make this Reitman's best film so far. However one can't help but feel that the normally admirable decision to avoid pat resolutions in favor of ambiguity leaves the film feeling empty. This may be intended, or it may not: either way it renders the overall effect flatter than the work here deserves.

There is not one wasted line in 'Up in the Air'. Every single word uttered sheds light on the main character, Ryan Bingham. As he lives his seemingly happy life, the people around him bring out the true him, opposed to the one he portrays himself to be when in a room full of admirers. He puts up a hard exterior in order to do that job he does, but with each new person he meets, he loses part of his defenses. Reitman is especially good at balancing the often delicate tone of the movie, which slaloms between bittersweet comedy and piercing studies in the way disappointment descends. It's a film thrillingly about adults. It's about the vast array of choices that are laid before a life, and the compromises that result when there are only so many departing flights that you can get on. Up in the Air is a drama that never takes itself too seriously, a romance that never gets obsessive, and a tragedy that never feels self pity. The setting that flips constantly between the polished veneer of airports, the dreary emptiness of office complexes and the suffocating warmth of families; makes it understandable why Clooney's character would prefer to think of the sky as home. The film doesn't condescend to an easy moral or right or wrong as to the lifestyles, it just weighs them.

A film about a man who has constructed an airtight forcefield around himself to prevent any form of intimacy or emotional engagement. They don't really focus on that, though, so it isn't an emotionally engaging drama, and they don't focus on real laughs either. At first the issue of nationwide unemployment is handled deftly, but at the end there's a "no wait, we're serious" dialogue montage that's one big eyeroll. Man i like Clooney's job. It was a great movie til the end where i felt let down or confused. when Clooney's went to Farmiga's house and found out she was married with kids. why would you tell someone where you live if you are married. Vera Farmiga great ass!

If I wanted to spend two hours with people I don't like, I'd go to my high school reunions.

Wow, that was surprisingly.. bland? I had no emotional reaction whatsoever to what was happening on-screen. Something about being settled down being important? Whatever.

This is not so much a film about the recession as it is about what we lose when we isolate ourselves and refuse to commit to anything. Clooney's character refuses to accept responsibility for his family, his job, his relationships and his lack of stability, and is left with nothing in the end. It's a deeply cynical film and it left me feeling quite empty, but it's very well done.

A movie for that cynic of cynics who just wants to find that right person, only he doesn't know it yet. So, basically, designed to appeal to the largest amount of viewers possible, and with nothing interesting or new to say at all (not even among Reitman's past projects). George Clooney charm is the only thing going for this & at least part of the ending wasn't a complete sell-out.

While some of the characters and devices are contrived, the film's tone and approach ring true for the most part. The inclusion of genuine testimonials from the recently laid-off works, and the frank look Clooney's care-free playboy facade is refreshing, if not surprising. It doesn't offer any particularly unique insights into the contemporary climate, but its witty and nifty juxtapositions (e.g. corporate downsizing by proxy vs. dumping by text message) make for engaging observational fare.

Another superb performance by Clooney brings Up In The Air to life, with just enough substance and story to enjoy

Wonderful movie. A very unique and satisfying exploration of loneliness, estrangement, homelessness (not in the traditional sense), and unemployment.

Liked how the main characters evolved and interacted with each other. The part with Alex is particularly well-done.

Top badass moment? Finding I'm almost the same as Ryan Bingham. Like him, I too collect ‘modern-life tat' and live on the road, only in my case it’s Nectar points (52,856 fact fans), shop loyalty cards and buses and trains. I'm loyal to everyone; I really am that nice. Not as good as his air miles, priority customer status and flights, but I'm trying my best. I've also sacked people too, because I'm horrible as well. Unfortunately I look nothing like him. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Its characters just blurt every theme and subtext out so plainly…and then nothing is built upon that, no insight is attempted or achieved, as if to say “That’s just the way it goes” but, no, that’s not just the way it goes, it’s not that simple, and if Reitman truly believes that, he’s got a severely limited worldview and a truncated scope of experience.

This movie is all about the Cloon, and he rocks it! Another quality effort from Mr. Reitman.

Clooney excels in the lead role, and Anna Kendrick more than holds her own against him. The screenplay is fairly tight, and the whole thing is loaded with charm. The only thing out of place is the soft indie soundtrack.

I'm not sure I want to watch this again. That said, it was really well put together. Best film of 2009?
