This was a really solid movie! Some of the acting is good and the story is told very well. Personally I didn't find it to be all that predictable either, even when I thought I had an idea as to what was going on the whole time. The low budget doesn't allow it to boast style over substance, which is rare in the sci/fi genre anymore. Loved the practical effects too. It's nice to see a Blumhouse movie different from the rest and a shame this one isn't as popular. Well worth a watch.

In the 21st century, sci-fi cinema has grown harder, shying away from the harebrained and underdeveloped ideas that used to rule the box office. "Upgrade" might have a sufficient amount of thought put into its concept to hold water, but it has as much in common with last century's sci-fi as it does its peers. It's a popcorn flick, a good one at that, with a generous handful of laughs built in. And I've always been a sucker for this kind of movie.

Folks are far too hard on this one. This will be regarded as one of the better pieces of schlock sci-fi action of the decade. The script almost steers into the rocks during the last act, but a quick course correct ends on a satisfying note. And it's a rollicking film -- full of fun action, camerawork, and humour.

I wonder if this was pitched as RoboCop meets The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Some fun action and camera work, but the tone is a too serious for how schlocky everything is. Follows Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey to a laughably cookie-cutter degree. Whannell might as well have the protagonist say out loud "I'm rejecting the call to adventure, now I'm accepting it, oops, now I'm crossing a threshhold, oh look, I'm meeting with the goddess, hey, what do you know, I've returned changed."

Pleasantly surprising! The spirit of the movie is a throwback to the sci-fi action films of the 1990s. But the execution is all from this era - in the best way. Techniques that would be shoddy or distracting in another movie from today work to better effect here. The narrative isn't praiseworthy but it's sincere. What a fucking dope movie.

I love a movie that makes me yell "Oh, shit!" out loud, then laugh uncomfortably for a few seconds, when the violence gets intense. Upgrade is a fun, tight little potboiler about the evils of technology. It's proof that you don't need a big budget for sci-fi, and if Get Out wasn't proof enough, it's yet another sign that Blumhouse's low-budget approach to genre can easily extend beyond horror.

A pretty standard revenge plot (cool twist/ending aside) is elevated by some interesting sci-fi schlock, along with some creative choreography/cinematography (see that spinning camera during fight scenes; the "first person shooter" angle), strong supporting performances (see Hardie as the chilling Fisk; Gilbertson as the troubled Eron) and dashes of surprising humour from Marshall-Green's refreshingly dynamic take on the man-on-a-revenge-mission trope ("you didn't know that I was a ninja!").

Finally action sci-fi movie with perfect ending and pretty solid whole story, which is violent but/and witty even in most explicit brutal scenes. I am glad, that the fights where not lasting forever and "sudden death" happens quickly :) The only drawback might be the feeling that it is like TV movie in some scenes... I am not sure... is it because of not good music on background or absence of right music in some scenes? I'm goin' to watch this more times :)

Rumination on the possibilities and dangers of Neuralink: the ideas and action are handled rather well but the dialogue could have used a little work and some of the acting is weak (particularly by the guy playing the Elon Musk-type character). Despite its problems, it is one of the most interesting examples of this kind of reflection on AI, even if, of course, it depends on accepting the plausibility of this kind of brain-computer interface. But DAY OF RECKONING and HER are still far superior.

easy to dismiss as a vacuous, bang on ROBOCOP-era nostalgia trip, but its aggressive movieness (production design = the clear MVP) may warrant deeper scrutiny given the focus on technological escapism and its resemblance to addiction (BRAIN DAMAGE came to mind). a practical, analog-oriented mechanic is converted by debilitating trauma into a cinephile, living vicariously through fantasy until he submits to total assimilation—a conclusion about which whannell seems appropriately conflicted.

I like how direct and objective it is -- basically a short sci-fi story about an evil computer plotting against everyone, including his maker, to evolve to the next stage (by taking over a human body with no cyber modifications). Like how robotic and disoriented are the action scenes. But I guess I wanted more gore violence. Third act doesn't flow like the rest of the movie, but it works. A bit more than a RoboCop extension.

To expand on that statement would be to unveil twists, subversions, surprises that make the movie so exciting. I'm having a hard time restraining myself, even on small details, because I think the less known going in the better.

Really solid sci-fi action. The technology we see is creative, often times intriguing, and never played too straight, there's enough humor to make it feel a bit more accessible. The story starts out generic, gets great, then when the whole conspiracy/mystery elements start to come into play it starts to feel a little forced, but still compelling. That ending was top notch and fit perfectly with the overall tone.

This movie is a big ball of depression. I knew going in that the budget was small, so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this movie came together. No matter how hard I tried to guess what was going to happen, I failed. The acting, writing, and directing were all pretty solid. I do maybe wish the ending would have been a little less soul crushing, but some of the comedy made up for that. If you like somewhat original sci-fi movies, you'll probably like this.

The main character was unlikable and unsympathetic. The themes were unsubtle. The 'sci-fi' was superficial. Why didn't they dig deeper into the ideas? They could have explored many aspects of a man+chip existence. Instead we got a shallow and obvious plot. Even as a revenge movie it fails because it lacks exploitation. The violence was not enough to save this. Too shallow to be quality sci-fi, too tame to be exploitation/fun b-movie.

upgrade has its own downgrades (low production values, some stupid "futuristic" design, low shelf casting) but all in all, it doesn't aspire to be more than what it is: a low budget, barely produced action/sci-fi movie. there were a lot of these in the 80s, and some went on to become classics (i.e. terminator.) i'm willing to see a whole bunch of somewhat decent movies like upgrade instead of overproduced and over-hyped (so-called) tentpoles, which go on to bomb afterwards.

Good story ideas are often spoilt by lousy choices, decisions and implimentation. Whilst hardly unique, Upgrade was a reasonably good story marred by horrendous production choices; As a B movie mashup of Robocop, The Crow and 6 Million Dollar Man it has people acting ridiculously, ludicrous "baddies", illogical body movements (with attendant motor noises), irritating sound track, daft out of place sci-fi ideas, inept cops and a very poorly selected cast which all conspire to downgrade my score.

I liked this only a tiiiiny bit less than John Wick 1. It's a hard-R nasty little piece of action mayhem and it's a delight to watch in all its grisly carnage. The plot is dull as dishwater and obvious in the extreme, but then so was John Wick's, and that movie is gangbusters.

So maybe I did spot every plot twist, if not from a mile away, then from far enough away for them to not have any chance to hit me in the face. But clearly they chose to focus all their creativity on the fight scenes and that paid off. Wonderfully choreographed, delightfully brutal and made all the more fun by Trace being super-squeamish about the whole thing. Complete with a downer ending, like a piece of dark, bitter chocolate at the end of a nice meal.

The story was pretty formulaic and predictable, and I didn't care about any of the characters. Well, character - there was only one real character, and he was pretty basic. The themes were obvious. I enjoyed some of the direction, particularly during the fight scenes. They were pretty cool. And I think I liked some of the music? Otherwise, it was pretty average

Although it's got the '80s-style lack of seriousness when it comes to its arm-as-guns sensibilities, I feel that it still could've allowed itself to be more cheeseball, as the more straight-faced moments weren't working for me, especially as all the acting sucks -- however, the acting didn't detract too much from this inventive, silly, balls-out sci-fi action film, with a stock colour scheme for the genre that was still pleasing to look at.

But that's okay because all I really need from these genre flicks is a good time, and it delivers. Sometimes Marshall-Green's acting left a little to be desired, but for the most part he was passable. The violence was pretty brutal and unflinching, but as a whole it didn't exactly add a whole lot to the genre. But again, that's okay.

It's the weirdest thing, watching a movie set in the US and then suddenly seeing a helicopter shot of the city and there's both the Westgate and Bolte bridges. This is definitely a B-movie, in budget and structure (all told there's gotta be less than ten minutes of action here, not counting the car chase) but Whannell manages to pace it out well enough so it doesn't get boring. The plot is extremely predictable, right up until the brutal, nihilistic ending.

AI has become the new monster in current movies, and this one does an ok job at wrestling with AI and self-control. There's some genuinely funny bits and some fun camerawork during the action scenes. Not sure why, but I was left feeling like I wanted more from the story.

I really respected this movie for knowing what it is and trying its best to please the audience given those inherent limitations. Great job. The acting and the dialogues were far better than what I'd have expected.

Upgrade is the apparent result of a fan of the Deus Ex game franchise reimagining Ex Machina as an action film. The film excels at the fight scenes which are well-choreographed and seem too inject a bit of humour into the film. Some of the designs are pretty good as well, providing contrast between the slick new tech and the gritty rundown modders. The plot twists are decent, but the overall setup felt too contrived and the actors didn't quite fit their roles. Passable, and even enjoyable.

Upgrade only dips its toe in the water of good ideas, but doesn't take the plunge. it is the action child of Ex Machina and Black Mirror but with the interesting dialogue replaced with semi-cool action sequences. I predicted the entire plot no sooner than the first line of dialogue. It soon became a game of "when is this going to happen?", instead of "what is going to happen next?". Its view of future technology is impractical than it is useful, or realistic. No ethical dilemmas, just action.

When I first saw the trailer I expected this to be the not-Venom movie that would be actually good. Didn't work out as expected, but even so, that neon B-movie sensibility is there, it's pretty, violent and with some good ideas.

Nice lower budget sci-fi film. Has some cool ideas and executes them well. Story wise I did feel like the plot wasn't fully airtight, but that can be excused as the overall ideas come through and the film is entertaining enough to motivate me to keep watching. Decent.

As smart as Upgrade tries to look and be similar to the gritty think-pieces it admires so much, all it can produce as a final product is a cheap imitation of them. Nearly all of this is due to the film's robotic presence STEM, who instantly becomes a handy dandy little plot device to get the protagonist out of sticky situations. That dragged me into a state of disinterest for most of the film's second half and made me disappointed in its inability to be as smart as it wanted to be.

The action is quite decent, but the direction and character development lack a lot behind, Especially the first act lags quite behind and character development is very shallow at this point. The film picks up its pace and fun at the second act and becomes quite enjoyable, but nothing great.

This was the best dark sf movie I've seen in years. It was also one of the best action movies which I saw in years. There is no downtime or bad moments in it either. Plot is unpredictable but coherent. Highly recommended.

It's almost unfair for UPGRADE to have such a rich, philosophical sci-fi premise when all it wants to be is gritty action schlock. To its credit, the film is pretty effective schlock, a nice imitation of nasty '80s genre thrillers right down to the bleak tone, the modest world-building, and the flabby third act. It's also a predictable film, and you may tire of its techno-puppet protagonist being the only one who can't see the endgame of this twisted tech experiment.

This is essentially a very violent and gory buddy cop black comedy, and when it's in that mode, it's pretty great. The chip is capable of taking over our hero's body completely, which turns him into a herky-jerky super fighter that dispenses thugs with gory efficiency while having deadpan conversations with his pal chippie. When the film tries to get serious and wrap up it's story, it reveals that there's really nothing behind it's shiny surface. Still ... you could do a lot worse.
