Almost every scene feels ladened with this humorous undertone that automatically hamstrings any attempt at tension, while its underlying message - however honourable it may be - eventually buckles under the weight of its own self-importance. It's as if Peele placed a bet on two different racehorses yet both of them took a header before they even had a chance to finish the race. Was hoping for something along the lines of The Shining or The Witch, but instead I got Get Out 2: Electric Boogaloo.

I thought this was very good. The trailers don't even begin to reveal what's underneath the hood. Jordan Peele seems to really know how to bring these old-school horror elements back to life and modernize them. Parts of this reminded me of Alfred Hitchcock and George A. Romero. I think less humor would have made it a perfect movie, seeing as it felt unnecessary or out of place. Still a very creepy, chilling movie overall, and Lupita Nyong'o is just stellar. One of this years best so far.

The movie opens with some text that reminded me of Unbreakable where suddenly I'm adjusting my thoughts as to exactly what type of film I was about to see. Also managed to keep most of the trailer relegated to the first half of the movie, which is always welcome. I went on Discount Price Wednesday which means in order to see this all I had to do was put 5 on it.

Doesn't make a lick of sense, with a "so what?" twist you'll see coming from the very beginning, and leave the theatre hoping to read an explanation of the plot online later...but none of them add anything to this shoulder shrug of a film.

the score reflects the number of minutes I enjoyed. what starts as an interesting psychological horror piece devolves into schlock, but the core conceit is too cryptic to simply sit back and enjoy the ride. it demands your attention and then wastes it. any attempt to extract some semblance of meaning to the movie is immediately undermined by something that occurs 10 minutes later. all of this is capped off by a shrug-inducing ending that might have worked if the movie had any kind of point.

Although Get Out is arguably the better complete package, I absolutely loved this ambitious mess. Peele and his collaborators have upped their game in every way craft-wise (that cinematography! that score!), and the cast are stupendous, with Nyong’o absolutely deserving of all the nominations. I can see why the third act doesn’t work for everyone, but I found it supremely powerful, with layers I’ll be unpacking for a while. And I see again we get contrarian nonsense in the reviews. sigh

The middle hour of this film is a nearly perfect suspense-comedy-horror. Every shot, comedic break, and moment of tension add to an enjoyable and unsettling ride. However unlike Get Out where everything was building to a cathartic and thematically consistent conclusion, Us builds to a finale that is asked to carry a much heavier explanatory burden. The creepy symbolism throughout supports the themes, but this time. Jordan Peele’s final minutes leave a lot more questions than answers.

After already being somewhat disappointed by Peele's much acclaimed "Get Out", and seeing a trailer that just looked like another home invasion flick with a spin, I didn't have high expectations for "Us". But I'm astonished with how much I differed from the pack on this one. This is exactly the modern horror masterpiece that people had raved about with Peele's debut. With a couple more like this, Peele's name will be seen in the same sentences as Carpenter and Craven.

Another laudable effort from the very capable Peele. There's an uncertain tone here, with much of the horror undercut with dashes of dark humour, and potentially complex themes relating to class and privilege, inter alia, bubbling under something that resembles a home invasion film. And it largely works, not least because of the superb cast. Wasn't sure about the ending, although taken as a whole the film is pretty satisfying. Looking forward to seeing what Peele conjures up next.

It builds well but lost me slightly when the plot evolved to something that wasn't as compact and neat as I would've liked. Still solid and Lupita is pretty great but I can't help but feel that it does live in Get Out's shadow.

Quite boring. It's a lesser episode of some budget sci-fi / horror anthology show from the 1990s, except that show would never have allowed such an incoherent mess of a story to be shot, let alone make it to broadcast. Lupita does good acting, of course, and there are a handful of "Hah, that was amusing" moments, so that's nice. It's not scary. Will you all get over Jordan Peele now, please?

Didn't like its schematic, over-calculated subtext -which is actually a supertext here, very obvious yet confused. Why do wee need the underground world to be "real", instead of a Lynchian unconscious "zone"? Why can the boy communicate better with their essential black-selves? Just because he isn't yet adulterated by society's whiteness? But then, is there a metaphysical "blackness" that some are born with? And wouldn't it be the exact racist way of seeing things? Also, bad acting and horror.

Like a 1000-part puzzle missing some pieces, and you only realize it after shaking the empty box. There are wonderful thoughts bubbling up, but not a one is seen to completion. I love movies that don't make sense - especially horror, where there's even more latitude to leave logic up for grabs. But I felt like I was belted in the face by The Bloody Kitchen Sink. Despite its flaws, Nyong'o just became one of my favorite Final Girls, her eyes imbued with every horror, however unrealized.

Equating the lower-class to defective clones of the middle/upper feels inherently problematic. Not sure Jordan Peele knew what he was trying to say, having the revolution of the oppressed result in a bunch of zombie idiots holding hands - A conclusion that lacks sense and quite honestly just feels like a bit of a joke. It does get the blood flowing as a horror, and it's nice to see that Elisabeth Moss continues to find clones of herself.

Maybe it was just my expectations were too high, maybe I just need to watch the film again, or maybe Jordan Peele just let them sweaters go to his head, and he accidentally went full blown Shyamalan. Before any logic or story issues, the doppelgangers were maybe creepy for a second, but then became ridiculous. Sadly, I never really felt any tension in the movie, which made the thrilling parts boring, and gave me all the time in the world to think about just how dumb the plot/metaphor/twist was.

Peele's mad imagination & attention to detail are easy to appreciate for a fan of 70s horror but this script is ironically too obsessive over it's superficial plot elements to make sense as either psychological horror or social commentary. It has a precise & direct approach similar to Get Out but a subject matter that could've used something more subtle or ambiguous. Enjoyable performances & eclectic tone also highlight the story's inability to decisively put them to use. Comes off as muddled.

It's enjoyable and the premise is cool, but it's mostly under-explored until a clunky final monologue that labours to make everything explicable (and it presents lots of annoying plot holes, which come at the expense of the ambiguity that can make this kinda film linger). It's never really a true genre film either because the horror elements keep getting hamstrung by comic relief. Feels messy; like 3 different films in 1, and the tonal shifts never manage to converge into a cohesive idea.

I think that Us is going to be remembered as a quality film, but maybe more of a footnote in the hopefully long career of Jordan Peele. While it delivers in terms of its cast, direction, and creepy, yet tongue-in-cheek attitude, Us doesn't break all that much new and interesting ground. I've done my best not to compare it to Get Out when thinking about this film, but truthfully, Us is still a great horror movie that just doesn't live up to the hype around it.

A wellplayed and good-looking second spooky story from Peele, who might not be the new "master of horror" (yet) but adds his own charming levity to the genre. Like Get Out it eventually takes a left turn into Twilight Zone territory, but this time around, it doesn't play as well, mostly due to the world being both over-explained and underdeveloped. The final two minutes of the film also completely undermines its internal logic.

Starts off with a lot of promise, but begins falling apart rapidly once it tries to expand on its core idea and even worse, tries to give some kind of rational explanation to what's going on, the very biggest horror sin. And the final twist is simultaneously incredibly predictable and somehow still a complete break from everything that's already been established as true. That said, it's really well made, a stylish film which holds the suspense well throughout. For next time: Less is more!

Very strange and ambiguous movie, but kudos for originality. And isn't that what I've been wanting all along? More originality, strangeness, and risk-taking coming out of Hollywood? They won't all be clear-cut successes, but that's the price you pay for not playing it safe.

Comparing this to Get Out, Peele's writing is just as economic and his direction has even improved. The problem is that the story falls apart when you stop and think too much about it. Moreover, the themes here aren't nearly as original or insightful. I'm still struggling to understand some of the symbolism, [SPOILER-ISH] but I've decided that this is ultimately about class and how we are basically a product of our environment. And shout out to Lupita Nyong'o's outstanding performance.

When it stays focused in on being a supernatural home invasion thriller with the gimmick of the same actors playing the protagonists and antagonists it’s quite good. When it expands beyond that as the movie goes on... well, it gets a lot more questionable - a lot, lot more questionable.

As ambiguous as it is unsettling, Us is a chilling tale that proves Jordan Peele's worth as a socially-conscious horror master. I appreciated that on second viewing the film's themes only grow in importance, especially regarding social inequality and the oppression of the masses by the powerful and wealthy. There are still some moments where the metaphors presented are either too on-the-nose or not focused enough, but on the whole this is a stellar piece of social horror.

Keep your video debunks, your articles painstakingly detailing the quote-en-quote plot holes and inconsistencies, because if that's your primary reaction to this film, you're probably not a very interesting person. Boom. US is such a precise film in how it's directed and pieced together, I admire it so much more than GET OUT from a filmmaking perspective. The screenplay isn't perfect, but it rides a literal-not-literal line so succinctly, that I have no major qualms with it. Excellent film.

In relation to Get Out it has higher highs and lower lows but is shot more interestingly in general. Peele came to play: lingering more, better shot composition, more inspired looking scenes. The underground/final fight specifically were very cool, very memorable. But the acting was hit and miss, some of the choices made on how to deliver lines were silly and threatened to take me out of the flick. Same with some of the scenes. But the story/commentary was sufficiently complex and intriguing.

Bodysnatchers remake with a huge twist that is more scary and unnerving after the credits roll than during the viewing. Which isn't to say it doesn't have its moments..The world this movie imagines is incredible, leaving so much to imagine, to question, to chew on. I hope there is never an attempt at a sequel because to build more on this would be to shatter its superb delicacy.

Overhyped horror suffers from the same fate as other symbolic horrors. i.e. it's neither sufficiently scary or intelligent. After a promising, near wordless prologue involving a little girl in a hall of mirrors, it's all downhill. Peele has grown as a visual stylist since his debut, and it's certainly ambitious, but unlike Get Out the 'subtext' overwhelms the story to the point of distraction, and it's far less playful. The social commentary also seems more confused than ambiguous.

Didn't work for me. Much of the humor hits but none of the horror. Any attempt at tension is deflated by a joke resulting in no suspense. What it turns out is supposed to be a twist is just what I thought we were all supposed to assume from the beginning. The big fight at the end isn't resolved by the protagonist doing anything clever or pushing herself, she isn't able to defeat the doppleganger, then just suddenly is able to. Doesn't do anything clever, unique, or challenging with the conceit.

Peele's direction is stellar-so is Nyong'o-and is tailor-made for horror, with its patient camera, stunning visuals, and poignantly mischievous flair (see the unique use of pop songs that adds an unsettling realism to the gory thrills). The writing is equally compelling, but with hiccups: The surprising humour is good but often punctures the mood, and the fascinating social subtext (see Red's amazing fireplace speech) comes to a slightly muddy (though still thought-provoking) climax.

One day you wake up and your neighbours are... different. Maybe it's who they've always been. Maybe it's who you've always been. Us is, for better and worse, a more refined movie than Get Out; a less effective "pure" horror movie, the initial home invasion and that tense finale notwithstanding, and the secondary characters could have had more work; but also even more detailed, more open to different readings. One or two odd pacing and plotting choices. Stunning turn by Nyong'o (as per usual).

What started as a very atmospheric tension fest filled with sharp, colourful and memorable imagery, descended into a blatant push of a message dealing with social issues in the American identity and social consciousness, although the message itself jumped hectically around lacking a firm foundation, and was definitely not aided by the sub-par pacing and some questionable choices in execution and plot progression, non the least its comedic undertones. There are many elements here that make me potentially like this movie, as a whole, more than "Get Out". Peele is transfixed on his ideas and concepts, sometimes sacrificing the coherent telling of the story, which can be both a criticism and praise. One thing though that I undisputedly love are Peele's more-than-occasional scenes of absolute visual brilliance. The underground facility might be my favorite sequence of 2019. Nyong'o's performance is colossal, despite a lukewarm (for me) ending.

Very tense and hits all the horror tropes perfectly---though it really was just a home invasion flick for the first two thirds. It just turns into a confusing or even pointless mess in the end. Dare I suggest the comedy ruins the film by cutting tension at all the worst times? Fav scene: first few minutes were great buildup. After having heard others: dammit it was social commentary all along. Great metaphor and allusions. Terrible execution. But thought-provoking. Maybe better if not horror.

It's a shame that Jordan Peele's first film, which was so deeply ground in symbolism and subtlety, will effect his career so much. This one shows signs of the same winking subtlety that the director is known for, but at the end of the day, it's just a well-made horror film. The score is chilling. The cast is stellar from the top down. Peele knows how to subvert expectations, just when you think you've got him figured out. Us is a must-see for horror fans and fans of cinema alike.

The horror is effective: complex, visceral, and deliciously compelling - the whole thing filmed and acted beautifully. The humour is, at first, pleasingly subversive, the laughs coming from characters acting like human beings instead of characters from a genre flick, but after the violence begins the jokes fall out of place and the film becomes dichotomous. A unique, strange film, with lots to unpack.

Peele's take on his social horror finds a new level. I was completely sold right from the start. Despite its expository clumsiness - specially when it tries to explain it all, not to mention the twist, which is kindof silly, but still manages to work -, this plays as an arresting, wicked funny and extravagant metaphor of America's winners and its outcasts - they live in the sewars, waiting for a chance to take our place on Earth. Almost a body horror how powerful it is on body language acting.

Builds effectively up to the second (act) the fire is started and the other Nyong'o starts talking, then the shroud of mystery along with any tension evaporates. I had given up by the time the extensive exposition scissor scene rolled around and hoped for a twist to end the tailspin to the finish line, but no bueno. I was concerned that this was overhyped so I gave it some space to breathe before I watched it but still thought it was very overrated. While a few scenes were effectively creepy, Us just plays out as high budget Twilight Zone episode and poor direction robs the movie of most of any tension and scares. Peele obviously understands the usage of suspense, sound and aesthetics in horror. However my biggest problem is that the logic of the film is constantly undermined. Peele is a totally original writer of horror material, mostly for the better. His kerfuddled tale here is peculiar and hard to digest (plus the expositions by the raspy doppelganger are horrendous), but this works well as a home invasion film expanded out to an apocalypse film because of not just pretty good acting and nicely staged set-pieces, but Peele's dedication to establishing this story with both class and an aware goofiness.

I'm a big admirer, thus far, of Peele's ability to neatly intertwine social and socio-economic criticism with engaging, well-acted, and original stories. If I have a criticism, it's that he's making horror films that, frankly, I don't find very scary - or rather, scarier to think about than to watch. Which isn't to say this isn't still a delight; I just wish he had the horror muscles to match his other skills.

A pretty decent home invasion flick where the attackers are evil doppelgangers of the family in the house. The first half builds up some admirable tension and terror that unfortunately begins to unravel as the story explains itself. The second half raises more questions than it answers, and tacks on a nonsensical twist that makes zero sense given what leads up to it. This was all over the place, but a lot of the more straightforward horror seems like it's exactly what he wanted to make (even if it's not really my thing). Wonder if the rest of Peele's career will be plagued by unsuccessfully trying to match Get Out.

I love it. The horror and the comedy mix so well! Its so subtle at times which makes alot of these interactions between the characters feel more genuine. The concept is really cool, not only to witness, but to think about, especially the extent to which the chaos went. There are questions left unanswered and Im enjoying thinking up scenarios, which proves to me this movie won me over. Jordan Peele is a badass. The cast was amazing. Still thinking about it days later.

The plot doesn't exactly gel, quite a few scenes drags, and it isn't remotely scary. But it looks great and manages to be almost constantly entertaining.

An impressive refinement and expansion of everything Peele was doing in Get Out. It's not dramatically better (that one was pretty damn good itself) but it's creepier, funnier, more visually striking and more subtle and intriguing with the social commentary. This is a mighty entertaining mainstream horror film but also a rewarding exploration of social strata and the tragedy in not being able to realize that the Other is really the same as us. Strong stuff.

Really cool, feels familiar and fresh at the same time.

If taken as a visceral experience, Us is enjoyably tense and occasionally funny. There’s a handful of well designed set pieces told with a sleek visual language. Narratively, the biggest strength is its ability to set up and payoff certain elements, which seems like an overall strength for Peele carried over from Get Out. However, the logic of the world requires a typically long-winded monologue in the third act and still makes just about no sense. Nyongo’s performance is the reason to watch

Peele finds an astonishing way to be vague and specific enough in his over/under-narrative that works on - sorry - so many levels. Us is about healthcare, big government, class (and its codes), the false myths of neoliberalism, religion, of roots and growing away from them, the psychoanalytic fight within oneself or the world of pop culture and how it is anesthesia and cure for our traumas simultaneously. Maybe the pacing is off at times but I haven't seen a richer movie in quite some time.

Jordan Peele is now the new master of horror. Very intense throughout, original, scary and he also managed to throw in a little comedy to lighten to mood along the way.

there's a lot that's good here, aesthetically and cinematically, so much that i wished i could completely love it but ultimately it falls apart under scrutiny. the ending feels unfairly cheap, it hurts how cheap it feels. i still feel it, an unpleasant sting—not an afterglow.

The 2nd act is able to balance unsettling horror with comedy as well as the legendary Texas Chainsaw Massacre's dinner scene. It's unrelenting to the point it becomes tiring and probably needed another cooldown scene but that's nit picking around the films only real, but major, issue that the final act becomes overly explanatory that the films overall theme is loss. Acting is amazing and scares and gore were fun. Symbolism in the first two acts might have been a little to on the nose.

Very well-done, although not quite as excellent as Get Out.

Obviously it will draw comparisons to Get Out, and unfortunately this movie is much weaker than its predecessor. The underlying themes are so raw they don't stick with you, the story is too predictable (and that feels like a choice), the humor is not as timely as it was in Get Out. The acting is a shining spot, but even that is not consistent. Is it a disappointing movie? No. But it's just not as good as what it could have been.

Plodding, irrational and pretentious. Wasn't good for 120 minutes, then the twist made it even worse.

Mystery on top of mystery on top of metaphor on top of metaphor...but in the end it's just a heap of half-cooked things. Music, sound, cinematography and editing were great (as was Lupita). It feels like a movie that's trying to say something. But doesn't really know what or how. So in the end you're left with a good, atmospheric, weird home-invasion horror-thriller that's a little too long and has a little too little to say. But it's fun, cool and damn entertaining. That's the important part.

I definitely enjoyed this, but not as much as everyone else. It's not because it's not scary or anything, I think it blends well with that, but I'm starting to feel this trend where Peele is making these movies to just be different, he overextends arches that don't need it. It's cool that he wants to have it a deeper meaning, but it's not necessary, especially when you slap and have to explain the film to the audience. It's too over the head, and doesn't leave much suspense.

So ... there are things I like about this film. The first act, where the family is set up and established, is really done well. The second act, which is kind of a home invasion thriller is sort of well-executed ... all the necessary parts are there including some decent humour, but the rhythm feels off. I appreciated what was happening without really being all that engaged. Where this crashes and burns for me is the last act where the explanations occur. They are incoherent fundamentally.

It's brimming with symbolism and recurring visual motifs which paint an overall picture with many potential interpretations. I would say it's overall not as focused or compact as Get Out, and falls into an awkward trap of both over-explaining and under-explaining its backstory. Still, it makes for a great, tasteful, understated, and unsettling horror movie.

I do not like movies that I cannot understand or ones where I need to go home and read IMDB Synopses & Reviews to figure out what did I see. Hereditary from 2018 was incredibly annoying for this same reason and so is this. The idea is certainly fresh but you keep finding yourself asking "Why?", "How?" again and again. Even with all of that, the movie has some really well done scenes. I liked the climax involving the main character.

Jordan Peele's sophomore effort is a solid entry towards his filmography, with terrific performances, confident directing and a phenomenal score. It discusses interesting concepts such as classism and marginalization but towards the 3rd act, it starts to falter. The overly long exposition scenes and questionable character choices and motives turned it into another predictable horror film with an underwhelming twist. I might be a little harsh on it, only because I know Peele can do better.
